Meyers Must Go

If after 6 full seasons in the NBA he hasn't show anything special or consistent, I don't know why he deserves anymore chances.

Dude came into the season all cock sure of himself and failed to deliver. He conned fans into thinking he was a different new Meyers. But he was basically the same old Meyers.

Only because he played such limited minutes. Among active players who have played at least his 5200 minutes, Leonard is 3rd in fouls per minute. He can't play more than he did.

I'm not claiming Meyers is great, but the fans who 'hate' him and act like he's the problem crack me up. Like you get rid of Meyers for a hamburger and all of a sudden the Blazers are competing for championships? heh.

What baby hook?? Been watching Leonard play for 6 years and haven’t seen a baby hook. The fact that he supposedly has one and just needs a little more time to perfect it is about the most depressing thing I can think of.

I think the question is, "What Big Man Coach??" The only one we had Neil fired and we've haven't seen any progression since.

Weird, I totally thought that the team would compete for a title if they got rid of Meyers, said no one ever.

Meyers need not go, but he must be replaced in the rotation - that happened, so we're good.

How about with what we could do with the money we are paying him to warm the bench and wave a towel?

So, 10 mil a year on the need of the bench racking up DNPs and garbage time minutes is good?

Meyers isn't THE problem, but he sure is PART of the problem.

Could be that NO's ego fired Hughes for telling the truth. Since then none of Portland's bigs have taken big steps in their games. Also who knows what NO could do with that money, and yeah they should trade him, but this is mostly on NO not ML. Olshey offered him the contract, from all accounts ML has worked hard to get better he's just not good, almost everyone would take 10m a year to wave a towel. So yeah Meyers needs out, but the constant booing he gets, and heckling he gets at home games is just a little crazy and pointed in the wrong direction. Also a little weird, we can dis-like the contract he's gotten but shouldn't Blazers fans cheer for him to be successful while he's on the team?

Olshey's signing him WAS a problem.
Our salary cap IS a problem.
Biebs isn't a problem - he's actively supporting his teammates. He's not a distractor.

There's no magical world where his salary disappears. Such fairy tale hopes are a problem for my fellow board members.
He's a good guy. We made a mistake. We have to live with it for 2 more years. /end thread

He does get cheers when he does something good. He's no different than any other player who isn't living up to their contract, and in his case he's an extreme example since he's making $10M a year and usually gets DNP's. I agree that actually booing/heckling him at home is stupid, but when people know you're getting paid $10M to wave a towel, what do you expect? Who cares if he's working hard - everyone on the team works hard and is compensated extremely well to do so. It's expected. Nobody is obligated to feel sorry for him with that contract, quite the contrary.

Hey, I own his Jersey and am completely with you. I was more splitting it apart, meaning that his salary is PART of the problem. not THE problem.

I couldn't agree more. Meyers wants to get better. He tries to get better. I don't see the point in picking on him.

If I were PA I would make Olshey hire a big man coach for one year just to see if anything can be done. Meyers is a 7'1" athlete with decent shooting mechanics. You aren't trading him as he is now, so you might as well spend bit more and see if you can change anything.

Not just for Meyers, for Nurk, Collins, Swanigan and PapaG (if we bring him back). Ever since Hughes was fired, we have seen our young big men fail to improve, including multiple lottery picks (add Noah Vonleh to that list). Collins has natural defensive instincts, but needs serious work on his offense. I don't want to see him become Vonleh 2.0 - a starter because of his defense that never develops beyond a 5th option on offense. Nurk also needs help on his low post game. He's got great moves, but needs to finish better and reduce the turnovers.

We've already pretty much blown $41 million on Meyers. How much are we going to pay Nurk, Collins, etc. before we actually spend a little money to hire a proven big man coach that can help them reach their potential? It seems like an incredibly stupid business model to invest so much money in these young big men and to not spend less than one half of one percent of that investment on a proven big man coach to help maximize your return.

And even if there were we'd still be over the cap. Meyers isn't keeping us from signing useful players. At worst, Meyers is costing Paul a lot of money, but other than that he has zero negative effect on the team.

He is worse now than when he came into the league, and he was considered raw when he was a rookie. That doesn't give Stotts a very good endorsement.

Some players don't pan out. Actually, MOST draft picks don't. Meyers being a bust isn't on our coaching staff IMO.

He was making progress under Kim Hughes and completely regressed (or degressed, or whatever it's called when you not only regress to your previous level, but get worse than you've ever been) after Hughes was fired.

Not saying Meyers would have ever lived up to his draft position, but there was a brief time when he wasn't looking like a total bust.

There's a lot of truth to that but if you let one person become the fault of your lack of development that's on you.

I've been very fortunate to have great mentors that have helped me master my craft. When one wasn't available I'd seek out and identify another.

He just launched his own clothing brand so expect more well edited and lit videos of himself, but this time wearing a plain white T with his logo on it.

I think people ( sometimes even me) pick on him because of his contract. I know that isn't fair, but people pick on ET because of his contract, but no one seems to care. Unfortunately it is what comes with being overpaid.

I bought his Jersey. I've shown him support. Now its time to show him the door. Nothing personal, but if we are going to improve, it wont be with him on the court, it will be turning his salary into an asset contract with someone else.

Meyers hardly got any PT this year because there were too many guys ahead of him. I thought he performed pretty well when he did get minutes, but that’s a position that’s never going to be popular on this board. He had too many years of not producing much of anything to be cut any slack. I hope he can be moved to another team this summer and restart his career. His salary really isn’t that big by NBA center/PF standards.

I've changed my opinion; the Blazers shouldn't bring Meyers back at any price. I used to think he'd be a good option as a Matt Bonner style role player. But now I believe some of you are right; he's Andrea Bargnani without the handles.

Meyers I wish the best to you as a person, I like your humble upbringing story, and I think you're a great guy. I don't want to see you play for my favorite basketball team ever again.

If you agree he needs to go this thread is for you.

@Draco, where are you?! Meet the love of your life and suddenly you vanish from your favorite Blazers community?! Come back to us...we miss you...and Neil Olshey desperately needs your savvy financial advice!

OK. If someone gives me a $10 million contract, you can pick on me all you want ;)

9000 posts, then nothing for 2 years. Either he's in prison or was murdered. (By Meyers Leonard?)

...no, he really did meet the love of his life and they've been traveling the world and living life! I just figured maybe if I tagged him he would come back to us, if only for one last farewell :dunno:
