OT Might be problems with our food chain this summer or fall, so thinking about planting garden

My tomato plants have gotten so big under grow lights I'm going to have to transplant earlier than usual. I have started the two-week hardening off (plants can't go from total shelter to total outdoors overnight, they go into shock). Fortunately we don't usually have cold weather after mid May. Peppers should be able to wait until June although they are growing fast. Just made kale pistachio pesto which sounds gross but is actually quite good.

Just got out of the shower when Lucia ran in and dropped a mouse on the bath mat. I assured her I have plenty to eat, although why someone would prefer boring vegetables and legumes to fresh meat she could not understand. Humans are weird! While I dried myself she ate the mouse.
Damn you, I was just getting ready to have a snack. Oh well, there's always tomorrow.

Our lot isn’t that big so we just lace a raised bed that’s probably 4’x20’. We also have berries in our flower beds. We go to the Oregon City farmers market, which would probably be a good choice for you too if you’re in the Canby area. Download the “WhatsGood Markets” app and it will list farmers markets near you. You can place your order using the app.

Im not finding the app when I do a search. Is it available for Iphones?

Is there a vendor on there you might suggest? little tough to figure out who is offering starters and plants for growing vs produce for sale without opening each one up it seems./ I need to play with it more, but limited on time if I want to get orders in to pick up this weekend, im assuming. :)

Crap. Looks lilke I missed the deadling to order for pick up tomorrow. Anyone have a hazmat suit I can borrow? I need to get things purchased and this weekend before the rain comes next week.

I don't have any experience with it yet, but if you click on the Oregon City Farmers Market, as an example, then scroll the product icons all the way to the right, you'll see a category for "All Plant Starters". From there, you can scroll through all of the plant starts offered by various venders.

Look on the bright side, more rain means better fishing and less Californians.

Grow carrots. Make carrot cake. Blueberries have set. Four artichokes in about a week. Edible now but a bit small.

Nice! Where’d you end up getting your starts?

haven't yet. I guess its a bit early for quality starts from what i'm finding out. Now is the time to plant form seed, which we did for most items, but didn't have any tomato seeds. Ill likely try to use the OC farmers market app and order a couple from there as well as a blueberry and raspberry start if the ones I have planted now in the barrels don't take off.

If anyone is going to start tomato plants from seed? I highly recommend the Black Krim variety. If you can find the seeds. You may need to order online.

Very tasty large tomatoes, but with an irregular shape. Best tomato I ever eat.

That sounds like a gang.

"Dude, I bang with Black Krim!"

Haven't tried that variety. I have about two dozen tomatoes started from seed. Don't usually set out this early but they are so big they have to come out of their pots. Hardening for a few days first. I order seeds from Territorial in Oregon, they have great varieties. Pineapple, Chocolate Cherry, Green Zebra, Berkeley Pink Tie Dye, among others.

I usually wait until almost July to plant tomatoes. Quality starts grow so fast in full sun with lots! of water. Once they bear fruit cut off the H20 and the plants will put all their nutrients (and flavor) into the tomatoes.
