Maybe it's time the Ducks step away from the spread and the IZR/OZR, With the talent we pull in stepping back to a modern day pro-style offense may actually help the Ducks.

Creating a "pipeline to the NFL" could be crucial in terms of recruiting as well with a more pro-style offense. USC has done it for years (I know, I know... recruiting hotbed) and they used to put up HUGE numbers with similar/slightly better talent.

For the defense, enough with this zone-blitz scheme. It's outdated and turns our defense into a sieve up the middle of the field (3rd and long... and they get 15-20 yards like half the time). I'd like to see a 4-3 defense honestly, it gives us more consistent pressure without losing contain among the rest of the field.

Sorry for the rant/possibly dumb idea, I'm just NOT happy right now with how this season is playing out.

There probably is some truth to this, but pushing the pace isn't just conditioning, it's also a numbers game. The goal of pushing the pace is to wear the opposing DLine down and gash them when they're out of position. With half the OLine rotation sidelined, Oregon can't liberally substitute w/waves of fresh lineman like they've been doing in past seasons. If they were to push the pace (they haven't been doing that), their remaining big uglies would be the one's gassed in the 3rd. They've been running at a slower more traditional pace so they still have guys standing at the end of the game.

My guess is that when Lousi & Fisher return we'll see them return to the norm

In regards to our defense, I think that the 3-4 is just fine to begin with and it's far more versatile than than the 4-3. Do you really want a bulky DE dropping in coverage? That's rhetorical. IMO - theirs a fine balance on offense in the coverage game and the D-Line. Sometimes the D-Line can get pressure on a QB that results in sacks, hurries, and panic that makes the coverage far better than what it is. On the flip side, If you have real dominant DB's and CB's then it can make your D-line more effective by allowing more time to get to the QB. In Oregon's case, I just don't see them calling aggressive plays to get into the QB's head.

I don't have a problem with a coach making adjustments, I just have a problem with a coach making wholesale changes when you don't need to or you don't have the players in your system to make those changes.

With that said, why couldn't we run with a 3-4 AND A 4-3? If it's Stanford, then run a 4-3, if it's a pass happy team then run the 3-4.

You honestly think bringing up French or Washington on the D line to act as a 4th lineman is going to stop a Jumbo Package that Stanford runs or Bring Pressure on the inside to stop running backs like Alabama or Georgia posses let alone the true freshman that WE made look like Barry Sanders from Arizona?

To defend a JUMBO offense this defense needs AA, Buckner on the edges with Balducci and Maloata in the middle stopping the interior gaps and I'd even bring in Talia to overload one side of the line with either Buckner or AA! We don't need 4 non tackling LB's we need two that can hit "WALKER and Prevot" and man up coverage in the secondary with the amazing talent we have there. Stock the damn box to put pressure on Hundley and Hogan just like ND and Utah did! Neither of these two QB's are accurate with the long ball and that will set up Ifo and Dargan for PIC CITY!

We are playing into our rivals strengths with what we are doing now!

I love that you brought a lot of X's and O's to your point of view and it is plausible given the proper place and time but disagree against stanford. Apparently a 3-4 is harder to scheme against from an offense standpoint compared to a 4-3. I do agree that we need to be bigger and go 1-1 in the secondary.

I bring up jumbo packages because now UCLA is running one with Vanderchicken as a FB, we'll see that on Saturday in short yardage. Any team we play in a playoff structure from the SEC west, the Sooners or FSU has basically pro size lines and often they bring in another lineman to smash the run down your throat cause their backs are so punishing. Our 3-4 D has lost penetration and often containment taking on two guys the same size and strength as in the gaps they're supposed to be winning to open those up for our LB's. As for over pursuing, how many times do you see our LB's doing that in the 1-4 gaps? On the outside I agree with you, but not up the middle, our LB's are meeting those RB's in stride in OUR backfield. The 3-4 is susceptible to that sort of attack.

I agree with much of what you say on players but I think the only way we beat Stanford or UCLA is to stack the box and make these average accuracy QB's throw. We let them run or get into a short yardage passing rhythm we are in for a world of hurt.

Sack Hundley 5 + times WE WIN! Utah got to him 10 times and we have an offense that can explode a score if that type of performance is repeated.

MSU had a top 5 rated D last year in almost all categories. A FAR FAR cry from what Oregon's D has been! They run a 4-3 we are running a 3-4 bringing up a hybrid LB/DE on the line to attack an edge when you refer to our 4-3 . They have real gap hitting LB's and their DT's actually got penetration. Why is this hard for you? Their 4-3 works and our doesn't! They know how to put constant pressure on the gaps and QB's and we don't! Wake up Zed our D is atrocious. We're not talking quality, we're talking what system was being run and how big the players in it are. You're the one who always insists on bigger is better as you pound on it like it's the bible truth...right? Oregon switches their defensive front looks between a 3-4 and a 4-3. Tony Washington is the Drop End who is usually doing the switching though sometimes it's the other outside backer. Tony is 6'3 250. Last year when they lost to Stanford he wasn't dropping back into coverage & they essentially ran a 4-3 all game. It could actually be argued that they ran a 4-5 as the two Safeties were pretty much in the box pre-snap the entire game too, but whatever...

When they beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl last season, Michigan State ran a 4-3 like they always do. Their two DEs were Marcus Rush 6'2 250 and Shalique Calhoun 6'4 240. Sparty barely subbed on their Defensive Front the entire game. So 2 of their 4 DLineman were the same size of the guy who you were scoffing at my suggestion of being big enough to battle Stanford and of course Calhoun is 40+lbs smaller then any of Oregon's other DLineman. Not only that, but their other two DLineman were both shorter and lighter then their Oregon counterparts. Their LBs were more or less the same size as Oregon's as well.
