Mike Rice Jr. going viral

So it's no big deal, common practice, but he should be fired?
It's not a huge deal. If he's dumb enough to use language that professional hypersensitives have become insanely wealthy on in a situation where he can be filmed doing so, then he's too dumb to have in a position representing a public institution. If he's enough of an asshole to use such over-the-top offensive language as a regular teaching method, he's probably not the right kind of person to be a position of authority. Kicking a player in the ass, throwing basketballs, and moving players to the correct position with overly physical effort may be signs of gross immaturity and some serious anger-management issues, but they're certainly not abuse. If I was the AD, in addition to the suspension he'd get a specific list of unacceptable behaviors, and he would be put on notice that there would be zero tolerance for those behaviors.

What is your definition of abuse in a coach/player relationship then? If I kicked, threw basketballs or yelled slurs at my wife, children, or employees it would certainly be defined legally as abuse. How is the Rutgers practice facility different? If I threw a beer keg at your head.......OK, bad example.......

My high school baseball coach used to throw golf balls at us if we didn't use proper footwork on double plays. Guy was nuttier than a squirrel turd.

No wonder I'm such a dick.

I'm waiting for people to say Mike Rice Sr. should be fired because that's his son. Anyone?
HCP may hunt you down for that comment. He apparently has very thin skin when it comes to his boy Rice.

My high school coach would actually throw a basketball right at you (chest) if you weren't paying attention while he was talking. He also would yell at us to check between our legs when challenging us to take it strong to the basket. He was a yeller and a screamer, but most players loved him and no one complained about the throwing of the ball or yelling . . . which makes me think it takes a whole hell of a lot to get suspended for coach conduct to players.

It's funny because I dreaded my baseball coach more (and thought he was more of a dick) because he would run us to death if we were goofing off.

There's a reason talented players with actual self-esteem don't make good coaches, and the striving, grasping assholes do. Those who can't do teach. Those who can't accept being bad at a sport coach.

So do you like it when people know nothing about you but comment about your parenting skills?
Criticizing players, coaches, GMs, politicians, and all sorts of public figures is standard procedure around here. I see no reason why Mike Rice should be exempt from this just because he is a friend of HCP.

I think there are certain areas that are off limits and knocking a guy for the actions of his son crosses that line for me. Feel free to critique Mike and Mike though as I have kept them on mute and had the radio broadcast on of Wheels and Tone for years.

You eat shit for breakfast?

Can you not read or something? I've said 4 times now that it was over the top. Jesus.

Jesus, my apologies. I can read just fine. Sorry.

I, for one, don't think it should be that big of a deal.

You guys are ridiculous. He's not just being a dick to be a dick and make himself feel better. It's a style of coaching. It's been successful in the past and will be again in the future. And I guarantee he's not like this all the time, but sometimes stuff like this is useful.

Oh no he calls them fairies!!! Give me a break

I think sport definitely justifies the physicality.

Seems a little contradictory to defend him while saying he should be fired. Yes, he should be fired, but....you're all pussies for thinking what he did was wrong. :dunno:

I guess people have all kinds of personal "lines." For me, joking that a father must be "proud" of his son's misbehavior doesn't even rise to the level of the average insult around here.

Rice is going to have to resign. Watching the video on SportsCenter, there is no excuse for repeatedly acting like that toward your team. If you do it once or twice for effect, I may view it differently, but it seems his players get balls thrown at them all of the time by him.

That's just not effective coaching, IMO, in terms of motivation. It's a bit pathological, IMO, and Rice should take some time and re-evaluate how he views leadership.

How in the holy hell does he still have a job?

The suspension will change to a firing since there is so much attention on this now, but it should have been done in the first place

...I suppose it could have been worse

Many other quotes from the AD left me puzzled but this one summed it up for me

My biggest concern as the AD is that I am always trying to protect the interests and reputation of the university, and that's what makes this one so difficult

In other words, he was hoping to just sweep this one under the rug.

I actually feel bad for Rice. He was over the top with his coaching, but doesn't deserve what he is getting in the media, IMO. I would write this off as being an "over zealous" coach. Doubt any players are emotionally scared by his coaching.

How so? Why? All I did was say I was expecting people here to suggest it. I never said I blame Senior. I like Rice. Only analyst/broadcaster to ever be ejected from an NBA game. He's good at doing what he does - he's a character and he's passionate about the team.

Overzealous?

That word by definition is about the exact opposite as what he was.

You can't push, grab, pull kids

You can't throw balls at kids

You can't call kids pussies, ***gots, farries, ****s, etc

Yes you can. Need proof? Rice did it all.

You just can't do it without potentially having to answer questions and potentially paying the consequences.

We live in a pussified society these days. Bobby Knight did this shit for years. The AD will cave from all the media pressure. He'll be fired tomorrow.

Yup. Fuck this shit. These aren't kids either, they are grown men. These coaches help more than they hurt.

Wah wah wah....go cry to mommie.
