Mike Rice Jr. going viral

Even then Bobby Knight was still fired after the video of him choking a player surfaced.

That said, this halftime speech of his will always be great

That's just some good old fashion ass-chewing.

A take from Charles Blow in NY Times:

According to a 2009 study by researchers at the University of Northern Iowa: “High school athletic participation is associated with an array of positive outcomes, including high school GPA, college attendance, college completion, adult income and earnings, job quality, and beneficial health behaviors.”

But the same study found that: “Male high school athletes in particular report higher levels of alcohol consumption, drunk driving, sexist and homophobic social attitudes, gender related violent activity, and same sex violence (fighting).”

So the Rutgers incident, in its own way, once again shines a light on the broader, poisonous culture in which masculinity is narrowly drawn, where physical violence is an acceptable outlet for male emotion, and poor performance is categorically associated with femininity.

What are the effects of such warped reasoning, when boys groomed by jock culture must operate in a wider culture increasingly more accepting of gender and sexual identity variance, and more insistent on gender equality?

Do coaches like Rice strengthen the boys’ bodies but weaken their minds? I would submit that for some the answer is yes, and that this phenomenon is a continuing retardant on a more civil society.

At least 6 players left, despite the penalties.

If you want to judge the most successful college players, at least from a sports standard, they are the ones who made it to the NBA. So far, every past and present NBA player who commented said the behavior was appalling. These guys do know something about successful coaching.

That someone at Rutgers would defend it is no more surprising than battered women trying to stop cops from arresting the man who beat them bloody. You start believing you deserved it.

On the one side, the serious sports media, NBA players, Rutgers faculty, the Governor of New Jersey. On the other, the Michelle Malkin, Sean Hannity, Denny Crane. Now, it's wrong to say "X holds such and such a position and I don't like X so the position must be wrong", but I'll take the experience of ESPN and NBA players over Sean Hannity on good coaching. Not to mention good human beings.

I had a boss a while back who would fling crumpled up paper and stuff like that at people in his team meetings. He hit me with one, and only one. I said, in front of everyone else at the meeting, "If you ever do that again, there will be retaliation!" The meeting grew absolutely quiet, all eyes were first on me, then swung to the boss. He said "I'm just joking around" and I never saw him throw anything again. I actually liked him and got along well with him after that. Surprised me, cause I figured he would hold it against me, but there were no consequences. Last I heard he became a real estate agent.

Felt kinda' bad for Sr. last night. He had gotten some real bad messages sent to him on twitter all day long. Then during shoot around time, some Memphis coaches like Bibby and there announcer Elliot Perry were pointing over and talking about Rice. I don't follow those gossip shows or websites, but was told that guy Perez Hilton was tweeting about Sr. and not Jr........ didn't know the difference between the two.

Who made Charles Blow judge, jury, and king of the USA?

LOL

It's unfornate for Sr to be berated for his son's actions in a video. That's uncalled for. I don't condone Jr's actions, but that doesn't mean his parents are liable for that either. I hope Sr and family can find some peace during this tumultuous time in their lives.

$3/4MM goes a long ways towards finding some peace.

Well, I'm over this story. A coach did something wrong, he received apt punishment, now he and everyone else involved can have their lives back as far as I'm concerned. Good luck to Jr, just because I like Sr and would wish the best for him and his family. Good luck to all the players who will never make it to the NBA. Next story...

Same person that made the authors of the studies you quoted judge, jury and king, I presume?

Charles Blow is a blowhard. Not a scholar.

Agreed, but I think other coaches are on notice.

Like father like son maybe? How do we know that he didn't get this anger problem from his dad?

He did. I heard the 'Wild One' was a lunatic on the court back in the day. Jerry Sloan like.

With none of us there when Sr raised Jr, who are any of us to judge? I am sure he feels bad enough without us piling on.

Parenting has also.changed considerably in the last four.decades. I am pretty sure it was not his intent.

Man you'd think the guy sexually assaulted some kids with how much attention this is getting.

Huh? I'm talking about Rice as a player. Not anything that has to do with parenting. Sometimes crazy is just a genetic thing. I know I kick ass like my dad did.

Just because someone was intense on the court does not mean that genetically they are going to have kids that do the things Rice Jr. did.

Agree. Jr. is a grown man. It's not like he is a misbehaving 8 year old throwing a tantrum in a restaurant, where you can say, parents, get him out!

But it just goes to show how people's actions impact others. Hey, I'd send senior a nice message - HCP, to where? I don't tweet.

P.S. I cited Mr. Blow's column as an opinion I considered interesting. I did not say he was judge, jury, executioner, god or anything else but a columnist. I still think it's a better take than Sean Hannity and Michele Malkin.

I don't care what Blow's take is.

Rice's players came to his defense. They didn't come out saying stuff like "thank goodness, it really sucked having him as coach."

Blow? Rice's players? I'll go with the players. They're actually informed in the subject at hand.

And note, I don't condone Rice's actions. I think the reaction is way overblown.

Just saw that they fired the AD and one of Rice's assistant.
