At least according to CSNNW. T-Wolves considering offering him 45-50 million for 4 years.

Can't say I'm thrilled about this because I doubt we'll match that kind of offer. Babs for starting SF anyone? Maybe we should have gone with Barnes and then got Marshall at 11...

EDIT: okay I see this has already been covered in the free agency thread. fine. just shit on my parade

I think this deserves it's own thread. Allen talks about Batum as if he's a part of the team going forward. They probably match, even it means going over the cap. It's steep, but man, we're hurting on the perimeter if we don't retain him.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

although if anyone's going to do it, I'm almost glad it's MIN.

Something like a 4/45 or whatever is low enough that there's still a chance PA matches--maybe this'll induce MIN to work out a S&T around Williams and/or picks?

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Good riddens. Batum has been nothing but a headache since the day he was born.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

11mil a year for Nic is not THAT unreasonable. Look at what Gallo and Afflalo got.

10.5/7.5

11-12 for batum would be tough to swallow, although i'm sure we'd end up matching just about anything, just for the sake of PR if nothing else.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Ya Gallo's deal was 4 yrs, 42mil. I expected prices to be inflated a bit considering the # of teams looking for guys like Nic, but somewhat similar.

I fully expect us to match.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

If we overpay him, we can trade him.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I remember Steve Jones laughing at the idea that someone would offer him 10 million when he was a guest announcer at one of the Blazer games last year. It was one of those games where he was in his "Bambi" mode. 12 mil is really over-paying, but I hope we keep him, somehow.

Denver fans immediately complained about that contract for Afflalo last season. He got paid and apparently hit his ceiling in terms of production. Don't make the same mistake Denver made.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

That contract is going to strap us down. If he doesn't make some significant gains in terms of consistency, that's bad news bears for us.

Affalo is 3 years older then Batum and was at his peek when he signed that contract. Guy is nothing but a 3 shooter and a defender.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Do we let him go and sign Beasley with our fingers crossed?

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I've never really got the complaints from people about paying Batum $10M+.

Max contracts are the going rate for a good, healthy big-man (i.e. Hibbert) and $8-12M is about the average salary for a young, SG/SF like Batum coming off their rookie contract.

I've got a question for some of the board's resident capologists:

If we resign Batum at say 4-years/$45M and Hibbert at the max of 4-years/$58M, what will our cap situation look like over the next 5 years, are we looking at the luxury tax in a couple years? My guess would be is that if we get both Batum and Hibbert that likely means Matthews will be gone by the end of next off-season. With Batum/LA/Hibbert's contracts, we will really need to fill out the roster with lower priced players and depend on the development of players like Lillard, Barton, Claver, Elliot, etc.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

I don't think Beasley would be a good plan B...he's been getting worse each year, not better. He was actually a pretty decent rookie, but now he's dropped solidly below average in terms of production.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Wow, I'm surprised by many of your responses.

The one poster had it right. Good Riddance, Batum. He ain't worth it.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

If this is the offer I would let Nic walk. He is not going to be the second fiddle of a championship team, and with LaMarcus and a player like Hibbert on huge deals we need to be smart about using cap room and luxury tax room to add that key additional piece. Without Batum we at least have a chance of finding that missing piece; with Batum we are more or less stuck with the roster as is.

If you believe Batum will be an all-star then you match. I don't, I believe the odds are he is basically the player he will always be. A great role player but not someone who can carry his team in a playoff series.

He's a role player. That is all he is. That is all he is every going to be.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

At that price I'd rather save some cap space for a Matthews and future pick for Iggy trade

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

This is easy: you sign him, and tell him "this is your time". Play him like his French coach does, and if he's still underwhelming, you either trade him or just don't re-sign him. Remember, the contract is only for 4 years. That's nothing, really.

Everybody is tradeable. Rashard Lewis has been traded twice. Besides: remember Olshey's refrain: his strategy is to "accumulate assets". Batum is clearly an asset, especially if his value has been set by another team. It's not like we're competing with ourselves, which is the source of most ridiculous contracts.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

It's OK to 'overpay' Hibbert but not Batum? Who decides what 'overpay' means? I go by the market. The Nyets are going to pay Crash $10 mil per. I'd rather have Batum. I would love to have Nico for $8 mil, but if the market says players in his 'tier' (sorry, couldn't resist) are worth $10-12 mil, then so be it. Once we pay Hibbert the MAX (if Indy doesn't match) we won't have a dime left to replace Batum with in a comparable player. Face it, we need him. If nothing else, retain him as an asset and trade him later. I guess we may just find out how much Paul Allen is willing to spend. And we should know by around July 14th.

So long as he's a useful role player, he's valuable. Dennis Rodman was a role player. Robert Horry was a role player. On the Heat, Bosh is essentially a role player.

Well put. Besides, always remember: it's not our money.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

With Hibbert and LaMarcus, no one expects Batum to be a no. 2 option. Once Lillard is up to speed Batum will likely be our no. 4 option. I don't frankly care how much $$ he makes at that point. We won't be under the cap regardless. It's not like paying Batum after we are already maxed out affects our flexibility in signing other players. When the rookies' contracts are up in a few years, that's when we will care how the money is divied up, and trades will be made. And...it's not my money.

Yeah, this is how I feel too. Even at ~$12 million AAV, he won't be an untradeable albatross even if he doesn't improve. And I think he still has upside remaining.

Re: Minnesota wants Batum @ ~12M a year

Maybe Batum's problem has been he felt undervalued. Well... this would fix that!
