OT MLB to Portland? It’s definitely possible

I didn't even think about this...good point! I'll bet Phil Knight could pull it off.

He certainly wouldn't go down without a fight! I'd say he or Gates are probably the only two who would have a reasonable shot at doing something in Portland (but obviously Gates would be more likely to want to do something in Seattle anyway...)

Why would Paul be opposed to MLB? Loss of season ticket holders and sponsers to the MLB team?

Wasn't Allen interested in bringing in an NHL team a couple of years ago but the price wasn't right at the time? The Coyotes are a dumpster fire and I think Calgary's team is looking murky right now.

Portland Coyotes? Horrible name.

Portland Pokerdogs has a much better ring to it.

Or how about something with a local flavor, like The Portland Bud. Simple, sweet, and aromatic.

PA doesn't want NHL expansion because it's too expensive. Moving a team to Portland has been in play since he put a buy bid on the Penguins. Fills up another 40 or so nights of his arena.

The team that played for the Stanley cup a few years back were the Portland Rosebuds. Fun new twist on that name.

I think some minor league team uses it, but the Portland Lumberjacks should be the clear favorite

This jibes with what I've heard too... PA would be very interested to 'buy low' on an existing franchise, but less interested in paying the close-to $1B for a startup franchise...

Lumberjax were a very short-lived Pro Indoor Lacrosse team. I interned for them one summer, you would not believe how dysfunctional that place was...

Yes, it would make sense if Allen owned the team. I have not heard that he has any interest in one though.

He's tried to buy the Penguins, Sabres and the Coyotes.

Knight has no interest. He already owns the Ducks.

Well he also helped keep Casey in Corvallis. A lot of people give Knight shit for backing the Ducks but he realizes that his legacy is directly tied to their success. If say, he build his shoe empire on Talahasee Juco Double Wides.... might make for a bad history. Now 19 track championships in the past few years.... That's a legacy that endures. No worse than T. Boone Pickens dumping millions into Oklahoma State University.

yeah but he could consider using the Ducks as a recruiting school and the Beavers...given the Beavs baseball excellence ...hire Pat Casey to coach a major league team in Portland....I know there are all these reasons for not doing it but I'd still love it to happen

I'm not aware of any college level coach that made the jump to MLB. It's a different ball game esp with handling pitchers. Most managers are ex players. It's a very closed circuit. Although I am sure Casey could adapt.

It will never happen. They would expect the city to pay for it and voters will never pass a bill to fund a stadium needed for MLB.

Well, it could have happened over 13 years ago. The Grand Ronde Tribe offered to pay for 100% of the cost of a baseball stadium (at the time estimated at $350 million) in exchange for the right to open an casino close to Portland. At the time, Oregon was in a recession and the asshole Ted Kulongoski, who's No. 1 campaign promise was to do everything possible to create new jobs, flat out refused to even talk to the Grand Ronde tribe about the idea. It would have gotten us a major league baseball team, a free state-of-the-art stadium, a new casino and created a ton of jobs. Because Kulongowski was morally opposed to gaming, he refused to even consider it.

I don't fucking get it. We have several casinos scattered around the remote parts of the state, but that asshole would rather people drive for hours, often tired, to get to a crappy casino in the middle of nowhere, when a casino in the PDX area would create lots of jobs and bring in out of state revenue from tourists. Shit, we've had state run video poker forever. So, the govenrmnet can't be THAT opposed to gaming.

Glynn said Kulongoski would still like to see the Expos move to Oregon.
“He loves, loves, loves baseball, but it has to make financial sense for the state and it has to make financial sense for the city,” she said.

Well dumbass, a FREE fucking stadium would have made a HELL of a lot of "financial sense", don't ya think??? Jeezus, most people can't say no to a free lunch. This douchebag said no to a free stadium. Still pisses me off...

Rose (City) + Buds

That's great! LOL

I'd love the Portland Mavericks. It has the connection with the former hockey and baseball teams. Plus there are PDXers who think they are mavericks merely for shopping at places that aren't listed on Yelp... so it works perfectly.

Portland Mavs!

I've always been a fan of Pioneers or Herons

Nobody seems to want our dirty Indian money (including Seattle with a tribe up there offering to build an arena for basketball I believe.)

Kulongoski really pissed me off. I voted for the asshole because his No. 1 campaign promise was to create jobs, and then as SOON as he was sworn in he shot down MLB and a world class casio that would have both generated jobs without costing the tax payers a cent. Fucking lying politicians that lie!

If you're handing out some of that Indian money, I'll gladly take some.

I remember this. I was so mad.

I've often thought Oregon should turn a certain county at the coast or in central Oregon into a gambling destination. The tax revenue could help pay for so much.
