After receiving city approval, the Portland Trail Blazers are proceeding with rebranding the exterior of the Moda Center by installing a prominent high-efficiency LED “Moda Center” signage on the south end of the arena, a source informed CSNNW.com.

The source elaborated in detail that the new signage will face downtown Portland. Trail Blazers' President and CEO Chris McGowan confirmed the plan Wednesday afternoon.

“This is kind of an iconic building for the city,” McGowan told CSNNW.com. “You can kind of see it from wherever you’re at. So when it’s dark, it’s missing something. I think this will help make it more of a prominent feature for the city Portland.”

The new signage, to be installed in early March, will be approximately 17-feet in total height and over 100-feet long. The color of the words will be all white with the rose logo not included in this particular project.

Also, the upper façade of the Moda Center will get a new look, McGowan revealed. At night, a bright white light is what currently surrounds that area of the arena. In March, during the same time as the signage addition, a LED multicolor lighting system will be put in place, a capability that will allow for changing of colors.

“For an example, during Civil War Week, we’ll be capable of having half the building green and the other half orange,” McGowan said. “We could do holiday colors, too. One of the things I’m most excited about is if we do a big Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we could turn it pink. Once we get the system installed, we can do whatever we want.”

Once installation begins, CSNNW.com is told, it’ll be a two-day project pending weather cooperation.

“I think it will give it more of a sense of arrival when people come,” he added. “It will be more electric. It just adds to the coolness factor more than anything.”

Awesome!

Now they need to fix the fountain. Bring back the water and flames! The Blazers haven't been out of the first round of the playoffs since the flames were shut off. It's not a coincidence.

Yes, that's exactly what is making the building less iconic Christopher. It's missing a giant, 17x100 ft, lighted corporate billboard. There's where your corporate sponsor, renaming rights dollars are being spent. Always amusing how they spin this in the media.

Yeah, no building should have a billboard on it, or a huge sign saying what the name of the building is.

I think it's a good idea. Make it a sign people can see from different areas of town.

I'm not sure I understand what your response has to do with mine. Is it a failure in reading comprehension or a different perception you have in what makes a building iconic that prompted your response?

What makes a building iconic? A: Giant corporate bill board B: Architecture C: Symbolism D: B and C

Hint: It's not A

Moda, no matter how much "they" try, will never symbolize the Portland Trail Blazers.

my point is that buildings need to have some thing that makes people see them. any complaint about them adding changes to the building, or the name change itself, seems baseless.

I like the lighting setups at Oracle, MSG and the Barclays center (bright lights on the court, darker everywhere else). Puts the focus more on the basketball and creates a bit more atmosphere, in my experience. Would be cool if they switched over the Rose Garden to that.

Staples has that "theatre lighting" as well. The Lakers have it, but the Clips refused to help pay for it and have the regular lighting. Heard arena people say its over a million for the setup. Looks great, would love the Blazers to do this.

Rose Garden works great then! Sounds like a plan. Glad we agree. ;)

Edit: Oh, with lots of Pin Wheels and Roses too.

I don't think we'll do a theater lighting setup here... not that I'm against it, I just know that the fans and the involvement from them is a big part for this team... they don't want to "shut the light off" of that.

I do like the multi color thing, that sounds cool. The corporate signage... not so much.

And yes! Bring back the fountain and flames, dammit!

Why?

I agree with that, but only because the Rose Garden is so damn ugly that no change is likely to make it worse.

McGowan has more or less on been on fire already, so this can be his heat check. Despite wishing the Rose Garden name still existed (it really was a bad ass name), it's apparent that the management of this team is attempting to bring this team to the 21st century. And that is not a bad thing.

I think Moda has done a great job of preserving the Rose Garden name while using its advertising dollars effectively thus far. With the Rose Quarter being isolated from almost anything else, we will see if the new sign has any impact at all.

Hopefully it constantly gets tagged by graffitti artists writing Rose Garden over the distasteful moda ads. Nothing could be cheesier or more embarrassing to the city than a lighted billboard advertisement that you can see from "everywhere". Oregon has a state law preventing this sort of eye pollution and I fail to see how Portland officials can over-ride state law.

Yes, it is a bad thing.

It's crass, demeaning, and repugnant also.

And it will buy moda more bad feelings than good so it's a really stupid from a business angle.

And since we're Trolling the Blazers, how bout that Chris McGowan!?

What A Brown Noser!

They can do it the same way Qdoba gets around this law with its sign by simply paying the fine.
