I used to eat there when I worked at Bess Kaiser.

The Third Oldest McDonald’s in America Will Be Demolished In Portland Next Month
The fancy new McDonald's on the site will have self-service kiosks

The guy is a multi-millionaire over again. He owns tons of stuff in North Portland, including selling the property for that huge apartment building which is kitty corner from the restaurant. My family has been going there for 3 generations. I remember it used to be called Devlin's back in the day. Honestly, I like the place for what it is, but the food kind of sucks these days. My grandma goes there a couple times a week just to play video poker.

Their cinnamon roll french toast is off the hook.

What did you do at Bess Kaiser? My mom worked there for years. I was born there and lived down the block from there for about the first 7 years of my life.

What department did your mom work in? Which shifts?

Reading the article in the OP, I remember that my grandfather used to love getting liver and onions in Carrow's and Denny's. Was that an 80's thing? A Portland thing? A German-descent thing?

I remember when the Denny's by the convention center was a Sambos, lol.

Mom and Dad met working there. But I think it was up by 33rd

Your mom and dad met working at a Sambos?!?

THAT.IS.AWESOME!

The original owner of the New Orleans Jazz was the founder of Sambos. Odd choice for a restaurant name in a city with a large black population. I guess that's why he moved the team to Salt Lake City.

Yep....short-order cook and waitress.

Interestingly enough, it was probably when I went into the Marines before I knew that the name meant anything else. I thought, similar to Denny's and Shari's or McDonald's, it was the name of the owner (Bob Sambo's Restaurant or something). I know it was an amalgamation of the two owners, but had no other connotation.

Similar to when I came home from elementary school one day to tell my mom that other kids said they went "knicker-knocking" on doors in the neighborhood. That got me a talking-to when Dad got home.

How is that even possible!? I can't imagine McDonalds (the corp) would want to let this thing go.

It's not that big, seems like Emmert could move that thing pretty easily.

Yeah, it seems like that should be a central part of the McDonalds there, at least as a display. Otherwise, whats the point of ever keeping it there in the first place?

You ever eat there?

Wonder what the value of the place is on the Multnomah tax roles?
Probably difficult to sell that many of those awful burgers.

We scrapped the Battleship Oregon too. It used to be moored below the Ross Island bridge. Once it was part of the Great White Fleet, envisioned by Alfred Thayer Mahan.

They used it as an ammo dump for a while I believe. "Kind of" like what happened to the Bismark. The English dumped a lot of ammo into it. Har. Har. Har.
