People expect Greg Oden to wreck havoc on centers around the league when the regular season tips-off in a couple weeks, but not his own teammate on a Thursday night in an open run.
Portland Trail Blazers reserve center Joel Przybilla took an elbow over the right eye from Oden during an open scrimmage at Cleveland High School in southeast Portland and needed about four to five stitches to close the wound.

"Joel is fine. Greg went up for a rebound and went down on his head," head coach Nate McMillan said after the full-court hour long scrimmage.

"He'll have a few marks for a few days."

After taking the elbow, Przybilla went to the ground quickly covering his right eye which had already started to bleed. Blazers trainer Jay Jensen applied a towel to Przybilla's eye before helping him off the floor. It was a very nasty cut to say the least.

The last thing Portland needs right now is another player banged-up.

I was leaning Shav just becasue he's a player with some actual skill at both ends of the court, but 7 footers don't exactly grow on trees ... it's a tough call.

Not that I disagree w/ signing Hill, and for the reasons you mention...but I think it's comical we're debating paying a guy close to 500k per year to get beaten up by Greg Oden, b/c we don't want our "valuable players" to get hurt.

Reminds me a bit of Gladiator.

You have to go with Hill. He's pretty bad, but at least he can go in there and take some abuse in practice.

Przybilla and Oden are both really physical, powerful centers. And they both have injury histories. We really need a third guy in there to take some of the punishment.

It'll probably work out to about $1000 per bruise. A lot of NBA players have done far less to earn $500k.

I was at that game.

It was interesting how Przybilla got hurt. Both went up at the same time, but Greg came down LONG after Joel did. Oden's got some hops, even though he's clearly out of shape.

Steven of Nazereth is not ready for the NBA. He looked terrible in warmups, he looked terrible in the game. He's not very athletic, he can't shoot, he doesn't have good hands...Shavlik Randolph would be a better choice. That guy can play and he's not THAT much shorter than Hill.

Ike Diogu was the guy who was able to move Greg Oden around a little bit. Hill did not. Why hire a guy to practice against Oden when he isn't even going to put up a challenge?

Or 48M over 6 years, but who's counting?

Man... if Joel can't last through the first two weeks of practice and a supposed fun scrimmage without getting hurt by Greg, then Hill it is. Someone should take a before and after picture of Steven so we recognize what he used to look like when it's June.

Good point. But Randolph is 2 inches shorter. How important is that? I dunno

Just look how much our 15th player played last year. I don't think it really matters.

I still would take Randolph over Hill. Randolph had some good games for the 76ers before he tore up his ankle. And seriously, who was the last white guy with a beard that was any good? Mike Gminski?

D. Miles or Greg Oden. Your choice.

The Blazers are going to play 82 regular-season games. I don't think that having another 7 footer for Oden to bang with in practice is really much of a consideration... Oden is going to be playing real games and getting bruised and battered.

I think we should go with the guy who might help us down the line... whether it's Randolph or not, I'm not sure.

"Player 15" won't play unless it's an absolute emergency. He is essentially practice fodder. Therefore the best use would be Hill.

someone asked who the 15th man was last year, and suggested Von Wafer. I said that it was either Oden or Miles, since they were always the 14th and 15th roster spots on the Inactive List.

Ah. Gotcha. Thanks for explaining :)

Brad Miller?

Keep Hill, he could be Joel in training and cheep

Pretty good. And jolly.

Yes, he is good. And he is jolly. And he certainly can fly! But can he play B-ball?

As for Hill vs. Randolph. Yes, Hill is big and he serves quite well as a human punching bag for Greg in practice. But if Greg or Joel got injured during the season, would you really want to put Hill in a regular season game? Does he have the hands, the speed, the footwork/moves, the timing, or the vision of a first-rate center that can go toe-to-toe against the starting centers of other teams and not get eaten alive? Randolph may be 2 inches shorter and a PF, but I consider him a much better player. I think he is even a better player than Diogu.
My first choice would be to cut Diogu and keep both Hill and Randolph. But if that can't be done, and the choice for the #15 Roster slot is between Hill and Randolph; then I think Randolph should be kept because he is the more valuable player - both talent-wise and trade-wise.

I thought Hill had the inside edge before Joel got injured anyways. Hill is a good defensive center and provides a good challenge for our offense in half court sets in practice. It seems pretty dumb to keep an extra guy just as practice fodder, but it would be the first time. His contract doesn't have to be guaranteed and we could always cut him if we have to make room for a trade.

I want Ike gone, too much of a black hole. But due to his contract I think he makes it. I see him being thrown in if we make a trade to even out the $$$'s.

Hm. Joel was a lottery pick for a reason... the guy was a good prospect in high school and then coming out early from MN.

Hill has never been and remains as something well short of a decent prospect, in my opinion.

My reasons for wanting to keep Hill surround potential injury and fouls concerns.

Hill is kind of an underwhelming rebounder, at least he was in summer league, and his college rebounding numbers were nothing special either; the dude is a shot blocker and has good length but I don't see him doing much in the league (with us or any other team).

Here's an excerpt from his draftExpress profile:http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Steven-Hill-1014/

Where Hill has excelled is defense. His length and anticipation make him a great shot blocker, having averaged nearly three a game in each of his two seasons. He does a fairly good job at staying on his feet, and holds his position well. He struggles a little against smaller, quicker post players who can beat him off the dribble or with a spin move. Where Hill has to improve is his rebounding. He has never averaged better than 4.4 rebounds per game, which is unacceptable for a player his size. Improving his leaping ability would certainly help, as would again, adding some weight to his frame.

It's funny or not so funny, how under appreciated Pryz is around here. We now have the best Backup center in the NBA. A lot of team would love to have Joel on their roster.
