Move Dame now?

My comment wasn't about trading Dame, it was a response to your claim that:

"We are in the worst position possible in basketball right in the middle of the pack."

To bring this full circle...

How can we be in the worst possible position in basketball? At the very least, we have a 1st team All NBA player we can trade. Only 4 other teams can claim the same.

BNM

Ok gotcha I might have been a little dramatic about worst possible position ;)

Aside from perhaps five teams, I say we are in a very good spot, just not good enough to advance beyond the first or second round.

Our overall roster (and bad contracts) further have us, quite frankly, in a mess. And Portland as a destination for free-agents won’t improve with what we have to offer.

Too bad we are strapped with Turner, Leonard and Heartless....

We most likely won’t re-sign Ed Davis and I’m going to guess that there is at least one team out there prepared to offer Nurk a poison pill -

I predict Neil is gone sooner than anyone is thinking....like by July 15th!

So if Portland isn't a destination for free agents why does it matter if they're over the cap?

Heartless?

My god...

Because how else are we supposed to be rejected if we can't get a meeting because signing them is impossible?

Being over the cap doesn't matter.

However, being over the tax line does, as it alters the decision making process of the team relative to contracts.

Additionally, each team has limited assets. When players are overpaid, they are no longer assets.

Well that is one reason I like to keep young players and draft picks because they are usually assets.

The tax line only alters decisions if the owner wants it to. I think he was right to get under the tax at the deadline the last two years based on where the team has been at that point of the season but if he wants to please Dame he's gonna have to pay it this year.

Rebuild is probably the smart route to take. This team is nowhere near contending. Combine this with our cap, we're screwed if this core is kept intact.

I would be on the phone with PHX about their pick.

Draft Doncic and build with a plan to build around Doncic and Collins.

Smh.

Why do we need to go FULL rebuild? Makes no sense. Retool or get better.

No one wants to come to Portland. Granted, once here they fall in love, make Portland their home, blah, blah...but we are not the ideal market for attracting top free agents. So with that said, we must build through trade and the draft.

How has Neil done?

This thread is not about a rebuild. It’s about maximizing a trade for our biggest asset (Dame) to acquire talent and draft picks. It’s a thread about keeping CJ over Dame and re-signing Nurk and Napier. Specifically, it’s about trading with Danny Ainge

The longer we strategize around CJ and Dame as our backcourt we’re screwed. Individually they are fantastic...but when on the court at the same time they are NOT a dynamic duo!

Wow. You really didn't get the joke I was making at you... You must not have realized the context of that whole exchange. Eek.

The thread is about stupidity. The stupidity of considering a Dame trade, and the stupidity of thinking Boston would even trade Kyrie for Dame straight across, let alone throw all that extra stuff in.

Sorry if I'm being too blunt, but this thread is ridiculous.

Never forget when John Canzano said he was a big fan of my Columbia Basin College Basketball team based in Pasco, Washington after I called him an assclown over Twitter.

Lmao.

Wait. You admit to interacting with him on Twitter?

Respect level meter just went down by a point.

What is “stupid” (your words) is the trade proposals involving Turner, Leonard and even Harkless - WHO WANTS THESE GUYS LET ALONE THEIR HORRIFIC CONTRACTS?

No team - we’d have to add a #1 pick to one of these wealthy players to move them.

My observations of the second half of this past season:

1. Dame earned being named 1st team all NBA;

2. CJ took steps forward to becoming an All Star (if playing in the East anyway);

3. While the streak was fun, it is true we played good teams with their top star out;

4. Nurkic is worth re-signing but he’s not an All Star and plays weak, not strong. Hoping with another year or two under his belt he will improve. There were several nights he flat out disappeared;

5. I’m convinced the combination of Dame / CJ does not have the required chemistry nor defensive prowess to work - one needs to be traded provided we get high return;

6. I give Stotts one more year but Neil should have gone long ago.

Not sure why I’m giving credence to this thread, but if there was a way you could get Donovan mitchel and Ingles in a trade that included Dame, would you think about it?

There's a deep underlying logic involving moving some other bad salaries away from teams receiving those guys as well as just compensation for any long-term salary/talent differential. Apparently you cant see that even though I usually explain the logic for each side. Deals that are much more realistic then the one you proposed. Most of my trades have a 1st round pick going out with those guys. So what are you talking about?

You think Harkless is a horrific contract? Lmao. LTGTP.

1. We know
2. He was actually better last season.
3. For the most part
4. He played pretty strong the last 50 games of the season when he shot 55% from the field and scored almost 20ppg per 36. Oh yeah, I forgot your basing everything off the first 30-some games as you did with Harkless.
5. They both improved defensively last year and were part of a top 8 defensive team. How'd that happen, then? And you claim they have no chemistry... what?
6. They both should have been.
