Took in Vengeance over the weekend ... it stars and was written by BJ Novak from The Office and Inglorious Basterds ... was pretty funny and had some interesting thoughts on society and why we feel so disconnected from each other. A dark comedy that was worth the 1:40 run time.

It's about 5 years old, but I saw "Get Out" today for the first time and I thought it was fantastic.

I recently watched The Woman King and although it was a good film it's definitely not an Oscar film in my view. Watching where crawdads sing now and it has beautiful cinematography but is slow...and very hard to watch...I've been only able to watch it in bits...so far 2 sessions and I'm not through half of it. Movies like this really disturb me. Will weigh in when I finish it. Not an easy watch for me.

Finished "where the crawdads sing" tonight and it was a great second half to the movie...long assed movie but definetly glad I stuck with it to the end...very disturbing story about rural cruelty and violent southern men in the 60s.

Just watched "2 Guns" with Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. It's from 2013 and had no prior knowledge of it going in. Hard to explain after getting through it. A rookie writer trying to go for a "Pulp Fiction" story arc type of thing. Funny at least.

We watched Babylon this weekend and OMFG, what a weird and wonderful movie. Very dark, very intense. Margot Robbie should have been nominated for Best Actress.

If you like old Hollywood, boobs, and elephants, this is a movie for you!

8.5/10 Mrs SPD says 8/10 because of the rat-eating guy.

Cocaine Bear ... yes it's dumb ... yes the story isn't really all that great ... but there are a few good action pieces and seeing it in a theatre on opening weekend with a bunch of people ready to have some fun was worth it. Overall I'd give it a 6.5, worth a view in the theater but will probably never watch it again.

I rewatched the Irishman over the last two nights and DeNiro was incredible...an incredible cast and the perfect mob story. Brilliant piece of work. Hadn't seen it since it first came out and it's still incredible.

SCREAM VI ... really enjoyed it until the reveal of the killer/killers and then it kind of fell apart but overall a fun slasher/whodoneit

Triangle of Sadness, which was up fro best picture, is one trippy movie. Very good, unique. Takes you to a different place, like a good movie is supposed to do.

My favorite movies from 2022 in no particular order:
  • Banshees of Inisherin
  • Aftersun
  • RRR
  • Decision to Leave
  • The Northman
Second tier:
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once
  • Triangle of Sadness
  • The Batman
  • Pearl
  • Top Gun: Maverick

Good list. Was the Northman good? It looked like a GOT wannabes which isn't necessarily bad.

Banshees bummed me out. Obviously great acting and setting and story. But - SPOILER ALERT - it took such a violent, dramatic, gory turn that it felt like a different movie to me after. Like it was a bait and switch. And also, they never really explained WHY he went to such self-defeating mutilating extremes. That was a mistake. We were owed an answer.

Not a great year for movies I thought. I did like Armageddon Time and Emily the Criminal. Also Top Gun Maverick was a blast and I never even saw the first one. But as an old fashioned popcorn movie, it was really fun to go to theater for.

I liked The Northman more than most people I know, but they all thought it was good. It was right up my alley, Vikings, dark, brutal. It's a very simple story based on the Viking tale that Hamlet was also based on, but the execution was pretty much flawless in my eyes.

With Banshees, I was loving the fantastic story, setting, and acting, like you said, but for me the turn it took actually enhanced the meaning I was getting from it.

I almost included Emily the Criminal in my second tier, that was great. I'll have to add Armageddon Time to my watchlist.
