Hmmm.... here are some songs that I consider among the greatest ever.

Richard Thompson - Beeswing

James Carr - Dark End Of The Street

Nirvana - Polly

Charlie Rich - Lord I Feel Like Going Home

I only know the Nirvana song. Will listen to others in a bit.

My other nominees would be something like

Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynryd
Hotel California by The Eagles
Plush by Stone Temple Pilots
Big River by Johnny Cash
Use Me by Bill Withers

I'm sure there are more I am missing.

My favorite songwriter is Richard Thompson. He's the father of English folk rock and one of the greatest guitarists in history. I'd recommend the albums, Pour Down Like Silver, Shoot Out The Lights and Front Parlor Ballads. His songs are funny, dark and seldom end happily.

I will check it out. Even with Slacker when I find something I like I hadn't heard of, related artists bring me back to stuff I know. Which reminds me of a better song than any I mentioned, just haven't heard a decent sound quality version. Steppenwolf, It's Never Too Late.

Off the top of my head

God Only Knows
Imagine
Like a Rolling Stone
Satisfaction
Hey Jude
Smells Like Teen Spirit
My Name Is
Hotel California
Bohemian Rhapsody
Stairway to Heaven
Hallelujah
What's Goin' On
Respect

Keep On Rocking In Free World by Neil Young
Small Town by John Mellencamp
Father And Son by Cat Stevens
Story Of My Life by Social Distortion
Crazy by Patsy Cline
Money Talk by AC/DC
Anything ever written by Steve Earle

oooh, good stuff. My favorite line in that BB King song is "better tell that insurance man to write some insurance on himself"

Not exactly sure why, but I love the line from Guitar Town by Steve Earle....."I gotta keep rockin' while I still can, I got a two pack habit and a motel tan". Just struck me as clever when I first heard it....

Also forgot to throw "Mama Tried" by Merle Haggard on my list.

Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce
Just the Two of Us by Bill Withers

My favorite song and artist of all time. Marvin Gaye.

How about the dumbest good song as well?

I vote for You're So Vain by Carly Simon.

It is about him you dumb !#$@+!#&=^÷
