Nate Robinson is trying to find his way to Portland, but the feeling might not be reciprocated by the Blazers.

"Nate’s been telling people he doesn’t feel he’ll be around New York much longer," a source told Tommy Dee. "He wants Portland, he wants to go closer to home."

There is currently no interest from Portland in signing Robinson to an offer sheet, according to another source.

The Blazers are focusing their search on a veteran point guard.http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/59306/20090521/robinson_interested_in_portland/

Hah, beat you by a couple seconds!

Re: Nate wants Portland

I can live with this. Pound for pound, he's the best athlete in the NBA.

Re: Nate Robinson wants to be a Blazer

Hard to see how he fits here. Basically a shorter version of Bayless.

Except that he has four years of being a New York Knick under his belt. And that's not a plus.

Re: Nate wants Portland

He'd be one helluva an energy guy off the bench. It's kind of hard to see where he fits unless the entire guard corps is overhauled (bare minimum shipping Sergio and Bayless outta here) but despite his limitations (size, lack of point guard skills) I can see him being able to coexist with Brandon and he'd certainly give this offense another dimension Vinnie "Microwave" Johnson style.

I would be happy if Bayless becomes the player Robinson is.

Thinking about it, would there be a better teacher for Bayless to learn how to use his strengths since they are the same as Nate's?

Depends on really what's left over after this summer. He would be a terrific backup to an Andre Miller or a Mike Conley maybe. I dunno, but he's kind of underrated.

Re: Nate Robinson wants to be a Blazer

I've done a 180 on Nate. Well... maybe a 145 or so.

I didn't think he'd be able to do the things that he could do in college and take that into the NBA. I was wrong. He CAN do those things. He can score in bunches, he can beat people off the dribble and get to the line, and he can avoid getting abused by bigger players.

Is he a perfect player? Heck no. He's too emotional and, for all of his strength (and he is a pretty darn strong guy, irrespective of his height) he still is essentially a sub-6 foot shooting guard, and that causes problems.

He also has an inflated sense of himself as a player and as a free agent (in terms of money).

Once upon a time, if the Blazers had acquired Nate, I would have been apoplectic. Now? I could see him fitting in and providing some explosive offense off the bench. Would it be the best idea ever? I don't think so. But it COULD work...

Re: Nate Robinson wants to be a Blazer

ugh...NO on this. the only postitive i see is that he knows how to play with brandon but then again, nate was "the man" on those UW teams and he would be second fiddle here. i do not want nate and bayless as our two "pgs", that would drive me up a wall.

I totally agree, but let's say deals were made to get Andre Miller and Blake, Bayless and Sergio weren't with the team, a four guard lineup of Miller, Robinson, Brandon and Rudy sure seems like a potent bunch, especially since Brandon has the ability to play the 3 in a small ball lineup.

I do admit that it's a weird fit.

If the Houston series should have taught one lesson this year, is there is value in having a guy who can just flat out score. When the defense is tight, team members are tight, nothing seems to be going right, you can go to somebody who will get you a bucket, and the team will relax after it is made. Nate can get you buckets. Without a doubt.

That's exactly how I feel. He makes up for his limitations with his unbelievable athletic ability and brute strength.

A great bench player. A starter? No. Backing up Andre Miller? definitely.

It really depends on what Bayless was traded to get. If Bayless were essentially traded to get Robinson (like a sign-and-trade), then I'd hate it. I think Bayless is a much bigger talent than Robinson. If Bayless were traded for another really good prospect at some other position, and Robinson/Miller were signed, I'd be pretty okay with that.

But considering that Portland's biggest need, both long-term and short-term, is at point guard, it's hard to see what Bayless might be traded for that didn't bring back another point guard.

Small forward.

And, if we see Houston in the playoffs again next year, he can help guard Yao.

Small forward.

Batum is the long-term future of the position for the team and, with defense factored in, was close to an average starter as a 19-20 year old rookie. I wouldn't want to trade Bayless for a short-term small forward, when Batum isn't all that far away from being a very good player.

^ gotta gree with Minstrel on that one. SF is much MUCH more shored up than our PG spot.

I would love to sign Nate Rob. New York, trying to keep salary low, will prolly not match any decent offer. Maybe we could get a discount since he WANTS us.
I could live with him starting for this season before handing the keys over to Bayless and letting Nate be exactly a Microwave player off of the bench. To play with Brandon, we need an offensive threat who doesn't need the ball in his hands at all times.

A though..
Sign Nate
trade Sergio to NY for their trade exception
Use Martell,Blake and future picks in a sign and trade for Artest or Hedo

Nate/Bayless
Roy/Rudy
(Artest/Hedo)/Batum
LMA/Trav
GO/Thrilla

Nate could be the closest thing to Terry Porter we have had in a while..a stocky guard who can fill it up any any moment.

Could work but I have 3 issues...

1. I think Nate would be a better fit if we had someone like Miller or Hinrich rather than just him and Bayless.

2. Getting Artest or Hedo for that would be...amazing, but I think it would take a bit more than that.

3. Travis should not be our backup PF.

I think Robinson would create an unwelcomed problem for the Blazers. There are already enough players who are probably thinking they should get more minutes. Robinson isn't a 30 min a game guy, so then what? Back up to Blake? (Or as some want Miller). What about Bayless? Then there is Roy also getting some run at PG in the 4th and it seems Nate is always trying to find more minutes for Rudy.

With Blake, Bayless, Robinson, Roy, Rudy, Webster, Batum, Outlaw (even assuming Sergio is gone) . . . I see a lot of players who will be wanting more minutes (Robinson won't be as patient as rookies are) . . . and one player the Blazers will need to give big big minutes.

I wouls like to see the Blazers target one or two key guys and then pick up a couple players content being the practice and good team guys.

He only averaged 30mpg this past year (which was a career high). You'd think he might be willing to drop that down to 20-25 mpg to play on a contender (then again, you never know).

This is the best I could do in breaking down minutes with the previously mentioned roster (although I omitted Outlaw in favor of "backup PF-who theoretically might be able to play a little center). Obviously injuries will occur as well. It's really tough to find minutes for all of the guards.

Nate(24)/Bayless(20)/Roy(8)
Roy(30)/Rudy (14)
Batum(20)/Webster(20)/Rudy(8)
Aldridge(38)/Backup PF(10)
Oden/Joel (48)

Nate Robinson is better than I thought he was. I only see him occasionally, and I thought he was just a waterbug guard who didn't do much all that well. But he has a surprisingly good Assist Rate and scoring efficiency, fueling a very nice PER (after two seasons of average PER). Plus, he's only 24.

I wouldn't mind acquiring Robinson and letting Bayless back him up. When/if Bayless pans out into a good regular, Robinson can shift to an energizer off the bench. I could imagine Robinson and Fernandez being a very exciting and potent backcourt off the bench.

I'd still rather have Sessions, but if that isn't possible, I'd be quite intrigued by using the cap space to acquire Robinson. At only 24 years old, he'd be a long-term asset.

Overrated one-dimensional ego in tennis shoes.

Maybe he could spell Blaze at halftime?

seems like a jerk, but might be a good energy guy....him and Roy are friends I think?

He's kind of a hot tempered, and he'll throw down with anyone (Just look at the brawl between the Knicks and Thuggets a couple of years ago) but I'm not sure I would call him a jerk ... definitely tough and intense.

And yes, he and Roy know each other and are friends.
