My guess as to why the UK did hand back Hong Kong island is because without the New Territories, the island did not have the infrastructure to function, and maybe because the UK feared China would go to war over the island.

This in not the history as I've understood it....I was told they had a lease on HK island and it ran out...I was in Taipei when they turned it over...don't ever remember any British media saying anything except the lease is up....the BBC was the station covering the event and Star TV network run by Rupert Murdoch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handover_of_Hong_Kong....from what I've read so far they had meetings starting in 1984 to try to get HK officials some power in the way the island was run....China agreed to 50 years of HK administration to transition...now they've broken that part of the agreement that Thatcher had worked for. 97% of Kowloon, Hong Kong and the New Territories were covered under the act...China has a history of breaking these agreements...they did it with the Spratly Islands concerning Vietnam, Phillipines and Taiwan as well...

The background of the Sino–British Joint Declaration was the pending expiration of the lease of the New Territories on 1 July 1997.[4]The lease was negotiated between the UK and the Guangxu Emperor of China, and was for a period of 99 years starting from 1 July 1898 under the Second Convention of Peking. At the time of the lease signing, Hong Kong Island had already been ceded to the UK in perpetuity under the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842 after the First Opium War, and the southern part of the Kowloon Peninsula as well as the Stonecutters Island had also been ceded to the UK in perpetuity under the Convention of Beijing in 1860 after the Second Opium War.

But here's the thing. If Trump had the ability and option to be a dictator he'd take that in a second. He's trying every day. Trying = doing. Identifying it and calling it out is the right thing to do before it actually happens. Period.

Say what? That Trump is a dictator? Say it all you want....just remember: saying it doesn't make it true. Get back to me when tanks start rolling down Main Street and military troops start executing people en mass and setting up show trials through Junta puppet courts. So all I need to do to move a thread is start talking about Trump or gun control? Interesting.... I will keep that in mind anytime someone posts something that annoys me.

If it's just one person I will delete their post(s). But this was multiple people so it was just easier to move the thread then delete or edit multiple posts.

For the most part I don't feel like we really veered that far off of the topic though, we were discussing the NBA (even when talking about Kerr as he's in the NBA) and China. Yeah I went back and forth with a few people, but I didn't feel like were disrespecting each other, or whatever just disagreeing which when something is "politically heated" like this is definitely is, disagreement seems like it's going to come about. I certainly didn't mean to sound disrespectful to @kjironman1 or @andalusian we were (in my opinion) just relaying our thoughts on the subject at hand even if we disagreed. It probably does belong in OT though...
