The Spurs have had a lot of stopgap bigs like Rasho, Elson and Oberto who are solid but are just there to fill a very simple role.
Mahinmi is 21 and very athletic and has been learning from Tim Duncan for two years. He has to be the future for the Spurs.
Duncan could stay at an elite level for a few more years if he continues to reduce his minutes and takes a very conservative approach. If he is forced to play too many minutes because no one steps up, he will take a precipitous Jason Kidd-like plummet. He's showing a lot of signs of aging quickly just like Kidd was. The difference is that the Nets foolishly ignored it, never addressed it and lived in denial and the Spurs have recognized the issue and made it a priority to lighten Duncan's load.
