I do not see it that way. The pick owed to SA will always be top 6 protected and will convert to a second if not conveyed. While it is not a draft to tank like Detroit is currently doing since there is no top talent, there are a number of prospects that are worth taking a shot on in the Top 6.

With the Jazz, I am beginning to think they never tank.
Oh I didn’t know it converted to 2nds, I assumed it moved to ‘25 and carried on for a few years. My bad. You’re right then.

We keep thinking of Portland as a seller but here's an idea:

To POR:
Markkanen

To UTA:
GSW pick via POR
DAL pick via NYK
Kings pick
Davion Mitchell
Fournier

To NYK:
Brogdon

To SAC:
Thybulle
2nds from POR

SAC would need to send us another minimum contract filler and this works financially, so maybe he could be a foundational piece for us in the future? His skillset is exactly what we are lacking, and don't currently have any youngins who could assume that role.

Lauri looks awesome, and is due a BIG payday. He's young enough to straddle multiple timelines.
That is an incredibly putrid return for Markkanen. Brogdon + Thybulle + a maybe lotto pick in a bad draft + some 2nds?

This is the only reason I’d trade for Markkanen, because that is pennies on the dollar.

I would love for the Blazers to get Markkanen! Markkanen with Ayton up front. I think he’d be great for us.
I think I’d rather try to find a way to shed Ayton’s salary if we get Markkanen. Bringing in draft picks like Missi and trading for bigs like Mitchell Robinson who are significantly cheaper would make us VERY strong in the front court.

the Raptors scored good picks trading Siakam. I think one of their 2024 picks will be Rockets or Jazz. That might become a 'not bad' lottery pick.

The Pacers got an All-Star, and the Raptors can lose a ton of games next year. (tank treads are required in some parts of Canada)

It's the Indy pick in 24 and likely the okc pick. Neither are good picks

What?

The IND '24 Pick is currently ~18, but will likely be closer to #22 at draft.
They also got the OKC '24 Pick which is currently ~25.

I think this is more realistic:

Jazz make the playoffs. They sell off pieces at the deadline or around the draft. We ideally have some additional 1sts from any Grant or Brogdon deal.

After the lotto night, we trade Ant, Thybulle (or send Thybulle to a third team for picks/flyers), the dubs pick, another future 1st, the ‘28 unprotected dubs 2nd for Markkanen.

So Ant, Thybulle, 2 1sts (1 lotto), and a likely high 2nd for Markannen. And if they sell on Thybulle, they could get an additional 2-3 2nds, maybe even a heavily protected 1st.

I still don’t really like dealing for Markkanen because I really don’t think we’re ready. But if there was an agreement he’d re-sign or extend, then fine, I could stomach it.

I think some are underestimating how good Halliburton and Siakam could be?
Siakam is one of the best defensive players in the league. IMO the Pacers took a chance and it just might pay off? Wish we had a GM over the last few years that would have taken a chance like that?

Pascals wager. Looks like it paid off, Siakam likely re-signing over the summer.

He’s going to get some good offers for sure. If the Pacers want to keep him they will have to pony up.
They’re going to agree to that $183m over 4yrs or whatever is is, Pacers don’t make the deal without assurances. Apparently Nembhard has the same agent, no way the agent strains any relationships with the Pacers by bait and switching.

Pacers can offer the most. I see it as a no brainer Siakam will stay with Pacers.

eh? It's 3 firsts one of which might be a lotto pick.

Well 1 lotto pick and 2 1sts in a bad draft is okay compensation, but not great. If I’m the Jazz, I don’t see any reason to take this deal, the players involved are salary dumps. This is even less than the Siakam deal.

I just think Brogdon, Thybulle, a 1st, and some 2nds just seems like too little to give up if you expect a player of Markkanen’s caliber. I feel like even a homer would admit this.

I dunno--I'll be very interested to see how well Haliburton and Siakam pair; they're probably the best 1-4 combo in the league outside of Milwaukee.

And, head-to-head, they seem to own the Bucks.

This is an intriguing team. I wouldn't want to see them in the playoffs. The way they can score can make opponents look stupid bad.

Growing conversation about Grant to the Mavs all over twitter.

Exactamundo.
They have nothing other than Lively. Holmes is ok but not worth shit. No way it happens
Holmes is just an expiring. Wouldn’t even call him an asset.

OMax + filler + a 1st does nothing for us. OMax + Green + filler only makes sense if Green is sent to a third team for a 1st.

https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2024...ear understanding that, with both on the court

Some idiot on the Mavs reddit posted this in a new thread and titled it “Evan Mobley as a summer target, would you go for it?” Personally, how the hell would Mobley ever be available? But I also didn’t read one bit of the threat or this article. Anyone who’s bored should read it and see if there’s any validity to realistically being able to obtain Mobley is the summer.

If the Mavs think they have anything close to enough for Mobley, we have infinitely more assets to beat a Mavs offer.

Maxi, OMax, ‘25/‘27/‘31 + swaps in ‘26/‘28 was what OP suggested.

Personally, a combination of Ant, Grant, the dubs lotto pick, some 2nds sounds WAAAYYY more appealing. I read the title of that article and wondered how dudes like Maxi or OMax actually help the Cavs on that journey.

As noted earlier Thursday, the Trail Blazers are signaling to opposing teams that they won’t easily part with Grant before the deadline. Portland values what Grant brings to the table in the locker room and on the court and some executives are pondering whether he could be the missing piece to a championship team like Aaron Gordon was, according to Scotto. Executives thus believe Malcolm Brogdon is the likelier of the two to be dealt, with a fair going price expected to be a first-round pick and salary filler, Scotto writes.
For what it’s worth, both Portland and Brogdon appear to enjoy their partnership, Scotto explains. “At times, it’s been tough, but there’s something very gratifying about coming to a team where your voice and leadership is really valued and you play a different role,” Brogdon said. Meanwhile, head coach Chauncey Billups said Brogdon is one of the team’s leaders, and that he loved having him in Portland, but acknowledged the difficult transition for Brogdon going from contender to mentor. “He’s in a tough spot here,” Billups said. “He’s coming off the bench, and sometimes he doesn’t have the ball in his hands.“

The Knicks seem to be interested in Malcolm (as well as Rosier and Clarkson)
We have discussed Precious Achiuwa in the past, would he be worth dumping Brogdon? (With Fornier)
Can he even be traded with someone else or does he have to wait?

I am sure someone will say yes if the Knicks include a 1st, but let's just assume no picks are involved.

If no picks, then hell no

Give us Dereck Lively and it's done. Otherwise... fuck off. (Not because I'm really invested in Jerami, I just hate the Mavs.)
The Mavs are indeed a good team to hate. Could also try to fleece them for as much as possible. How many picks they got?
