Nets Keep Trust in Collins

Collins is a coaching-staff favorite. He defends, sets screens, takes charges. He originally became a Net to be a backup. Injuries and circumstance elevated him to a starter's post. No one has usurped the job yet.</div></p>

There's no mention of Krstic, so it looks like he's got a starting role as soon as he's 100%</p>

It was pretty obvious that the Nets didn't acquire anyone this summer that could force Twin to the bench.</p>

Anyways...no problem with Twin being starting center. It would be interesting as hell to actually see someone start over him. I'd love to see Sean or Josh do good enough in the regular season to actually steal the spot from him...but they'd have to do one hell of a job on the court. They'd need a double-double, or 2+ bpg, along with solid defense to steal that spot from him. As much as I love Twin's "intangibles", I'd be ecstatic to see one of the youngins to step up and take it from him.</p>

I'd like to see Collins playing more like 18-20 minutes than the 25-30 he's been averaging over the past few years as it will keep him healthier and allow the kids to grow up a lot quicker. Starting him still makes sense as he does such a good job w/ his post defense, which most teams try to establish early in the game. Limiting his minutes will hopefully help him get that set shot working again, too.</p>

That being said, as soon as Boone (or Williams) shows that he can play solid defense against the opposing teams best post player, he should be starting. Collins is a fine backup center.</p>

Because, I believe Williams and Boone have alot to bring to the game that Collins doesn't have, obviously. And I wanna see those youngsters step up and be better than Twin...which is possible, altho it's highly unlikely.</p>

To continue the theme articulated by Drew, isn't the goal to use your players in the most effective manner possible? How would you recommend that the Nets use Twin?</p>

I truly hope that someone manages to take Collins' starting job and most of his minutes. I give him credit for holding down
Bosh last year and was pleased that he seemed to be the only one willing to put a body on Shaq way back in the 1st Finals. But....in spite of how much he may or may not hold his man down...he's almost invariably outplayed when you look at the whole picture. At least what I've seen.</p>

Have him as a situational starter. Starting him against a team lacking an inside presence is stupid.</p>

I dont care whether Collins starts or not with the current roster. As long as he doesnt get misused or play more than 25-28 minutes, we'll be fine.</p>

Only in situations where the bigs are having trouble defending in the post, and/or when the offense isn't running as smoothly because some of the bigs aren't doing their jobs (setting picks, giving solid passes, etc), and/or when bigs aren't blocking out when they should be.</p>

I wouldnt be mad at Collins coming off the bench except against teams with a Solid inside Big man. However he needs to be playing 20-25 minutes a game other than that. One thing some of the Collins supporters forget is that opponents are allowed to double team Vince, RJ, Krstic, or whoever else has the hot shooting hand because Collins is in the game. You can leave him wide open and he will blow a wide open lay-up/dunk, how many times did we watch him get stuffed by the rim the past few seasons? It's ridiculous,a 7 footer should not be unable to finish around the basket. I know some of you will argue he does things that dont show up in the boxscore, but he should be giving us points and rebounds because of put-backs at least. He could also work on his free throws so when he gets fouled he actually contributes SOMETHING worthwhile. Is that too much to ask??</p>

If we ever run a pure motion offense, it will be difficult to run doubles at VC. When things got tight in the 4th, we went exclusively to the VC 1 man or 2 man game. That is a defenses dream. You run 2 guys at VC with 10 seconds on the shot clock, you kill alot of options. We run our motion offense, youi're creating several options for all 5 players. Defenders will have to stay at home on their heels not knowing what's coming.</p>

a) Doesn't matter who starts the game, it matters who finishes it. I'm fine starting Collins, and using the best personnel for the match-up at the end.</p>

On the same theme, minutes are more important than starting. Getting Collins down to 15-20 mpg is ideal, partially because we lose a lot of offense with him on the court, partially because I think he'd be much more effective if he stayed off those creaky knees more than he currently does.</p>

c) Someone's got to step up and be effective in those minutes. And I think this will happen too - we haven't had this much talent along the frontline since at least the Deke year, maybe ever in the Kidd era.</p>

d) I'd still prefer Collins on the floor at the end of most games. The only way these guys are contenders are if they focus on defense. Remember, the Nets MkI tended to play well at the ends of games not because they could score clutch baskets, but because they were so good at preventing the other team from scoring clutch baskets.</p>
