It's quite common in football (well you call it soccer) in Europe.

Well difference is in soccer you actually need the grass to be in good condition to play because that's where the ball moves. There can't be any snow or ice in the Winter so they have to install it at professional level. You don't actually move the ball on the ground in football so it is probably not mandatory.
