I learned after some genealogy research that one of the Glendale council members who worked on keeping the Coyotes in Phoenix is a 3rd cousin of mine. I've disowned him. Our shared second great grandfather was born in Canada not too far from Ottawa. Go Sens! Salt Lake better not steal our baseball team too!

Using New Orleans would be extremely stupid.

They've barely been able to keep their NBA team there, so sure, why not add another pro team to an already small market?

I actually was a Hartford Whalers fan because that’s the equivalent of like El Paso Texas or Wilmington Delaware having a pro sports team. But then I found out my grandpa was born in Calgary so I became a Flames fan. Now when I open up the sports page and see Calgary won I say to myself “cool”.

If Columbus can get a team before Cleveland or Cincinnati. Vancouver U.S.A. might get a team before Portland

Wait a second..you're actually...CANADIAN!?

Don't let Elon know.

They left in the early 20’s because Germany took a big shit economically after WW1. So I guess they didn’t flee per se. Went to Russia, then to Calgary and then to good old St Johns North Portland.

My mom’s dad was born in Poland and they fled during the holocaust of the 30’s. Ended up in Nebraska. She had a very unique Polish last name and outside of a few in the Portland area, there’s a quite a few in a rural county in Nebraska.

My Canadian side first went to Canada in the early 1700's. Still have some relatives up there actually. They either stayed in Alberta, or moved to Oregon. Kinda weird.

I'm liking this just because any time I hear the Whalers it reminds me of Mallrats. Hartford? The Whale? They beat Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime.

Wait, I thought they had the Nordiques?

Yes they had. I am aware of that. But there is a strong push to get a team back. And hockey in Quebec is huge. The freaking junior team (Quebec Remparts) had 10k fans every game. That is impressive. I would be surprised to see a team in Louisiana before another team in Canada.

Isn't Columbus larger than both Cleveland and Cincinnati combined?

Yep (at least city population wise). Columbus is like 900K, Cleveland (360) and the Natti (312). BUT their metro populations are all about the same (just about 2.1-2.3 million), with Columbus being the smallest.

Their metro areas are all smaller than Portlands, but Columbus has a bigger population than Portland does.

Population can no longer be an excuse for why Portland doesn't get an NHL or MLB team, it's about people with the drive to bring it here. Look at how quick Seattle got the (Philma) Krakken and Vegas got the knights.

We're going into the 31st season of having an NHL quality arena and no NHL team here. I was told, if you build it...
