So, If I understand correctly, some people hate Batum because they think he's going to get paid too much this summer? Why not let the market decide before getting our panties in a bunch?
I don't think Batum is the kind of player who is going to take over games by himself. If someone is waiting for him to do that, they are in for a long wait. I do think he is a player who would excel in the right situation, and that includes playing with a decent fucking point guard and a coach who uses him to his strengths and gives him a useful assignment while he's on the court.
I was wondering about this the other day. Everyone keeps saying he wants $9mil/yr. I don't remember where that number came from. Did his agent say that? Someone at the Blazers? A reporter with inside information?
Thanks. That's even a little rich for my blood. I hope they sign him for less, or do a S&T. If he keeps playing the way he has, one would hope the market and the new CBA will set his price lower.Kenny vance stated that at the meet and greet
I guess it was a reason we didnt come to terms on an extension
I want to go on record to say that Batum does not suck.

This. Batum is unfortunately our second best player. He is not a No. 2 on a contender though. With the right team, he is a No. 3 or at least damn good No. 4. Since it takes more than 2 players to field a team, I say we keep him. He is a rich man's 'glue guy'. Seriously, without Bobby Gross, the Blazers wouldn't have a championship. The market will determine what Batum's worth, not message board geeks.Ive mentioned before that if/when we can get our team back to a level of serious contention he is exactly the kind of "glue player" that every championship team needs. And that comes as a bonus because he is much more skilled at that glue position that most of those players tend to be. I think he still has some room to improve. If he was played more consistently and correctly (thats on the coach) and played more aggressively (thats on him) i think that he COULD be a #2 option but I would hope that on a championship caliber team that he would be a great #3 option with the ability to have the occasional #1 option kind of game. So with that said Im willing overpay a little but not a lot.

That's a very scary perspective. You should be Nico's agent. There will be teams tripping over themselves to pay Nic 9 million a year to have him........ we better be willing to or we will lose him and Jamal Crawford will be our starting 3 next year...... oh ya he's leaving....... Luke Babbitt will be our starting 3 then.
Id rather have a thabo sefolosha type at half the cost. Batum isnt worth 9 million. 6 to 7 ok. But 9 mil is funny.

But seems too soft to reach it.
I don't think it's his motor, but lack of any sort of ability to break his defender down that is holding him back.

Batum doesn't have the 1st step or ball handling prowess to be much of a penetrator. He's weak-sauce inside, so his game is pretty much jump shots. His defense is really over-rated as well. He's can stop penetration and block shots, but he loafs around, doesn't go after rebounds etc... He's a scrub.
Actually, I stated I thought it was too much considering how he's been playing.Ok, so you think we should spend a 9 million dollar "glue guy".

Exactly. If he's the 2nd best player on the Blazers, that's just a sign of how badly we suck.

Well, I'm not going to disagree with you, but I think it's hard to have the same kind of fire as the Thunder when you're on one of the worst teams in the league and you're getting destroyed by one of the best teams in the league.
