Depending on the school doing the recruiting, Boyett could have played running back, receiver or defensive back in college. He liked Oregon, and the Ducks wanted him as a safety after Neal and defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti watched him in a Nike camp at Stanford.
There were about 400 prospects in the camp.
“I thought he was the best player out there,” Neal says. “Nick and I looked at each other and said, ‘We have to have this guy in our program.’”
The attraction was mutual. Boyett, then between his junior and senior high school seasons, committed before leaving the camp. He never took an official recruiting visit.
