When I grew up in 50s Oswego, Oregon, everyone hated everyone who wasn't a WASP. We hated African-Americans the most, then came Jews, then came Asians, then came Mexicans, then came Krauts, then came WAPs, aka Italians, and finally came Catholics. Thank God if you were in one of those groups that you didn't live in Oswego then. I've returned to an area that was in the old Oswego and I see an African-American about three or four times a year in this city.
I live across the street from Lakeridge High School's athletic fields and I've never seen an African-American in any of the sports teams, not even among the fans. I can only conclude that the local residents make them feel unwelcome also we have high home prices.
You will never see an African-American at the Oswego Country Club private golf course or at the Oswego Hunt Club, a horse riding stable and club. I don't even see any in my church, which really disappoints me because our clergy would welcome them with open arms. Extremely rarely see an African-American in a grocery store around here.
When it comes to people who are disliked, African-Americans are always at the bottom of the barrel. Decent folk have work to do.
