Let the Hipsters claim they were in Portland before it was coolThe purists annoy the hell outta me.
The population boom, a lot of them from California, are the reason for the transformation of the Pearl/Lloyd and now Central Eastside.
The problem aren't hardworking/employed Californians - it's the streetkids from all over the U.S. who don't leave.
Maybe we'll just be a city comprised entirely of micro brews, foodcarts, coffee houses, and pot dispensaries.
What's the difference between Californians and the majority of Oregonians anymore? Both groups are usually smug assholes.
Gonna have to agree with you. The attitude in California is bad.not even close. SoCal people are such assholes, I'm actually a nice guy here.
Oregon drivers are also slow as fuck while Cali drivers are super crazy.
thats why i just bought a house, mortgage was cheaper than average rent.1900 for a 2 bedroom out here in LA is actually really really good. And that looks like a brand new construction, probably pretty safe in Portland.

And these are pretty shitty older buildings too.
What is happening is people are spending a larger and larger amount on their income on rent nowadays.
The housing prices and apartment rates in the Portland metro area are becoming ridiculous. And I am sure a lot of my friends paying much more than 30 percent of their salary just to keep a roof over their heads. With only about 35 percent of college graduates even getting employment, just what kind of future do new residents see for themselves? It's kind of depressing, really.I sure as hell couldn't... The part that I don't understand is how does our economy hope to sustain these prices? This isn't Seattle (Boeing, Microsoft) or the Bay area (Google, Silicon Valley). This isn't New York or LA. We don't have shit for jobs here. Outside of Intel and Nike, where is all this money coming from? We have a ton of young, educated, hungry people moving here and for what? I don't see how our economy is going to support these prices.
You live in the wrong part of SoCal...Gonna have to agree with you. The attitude in California is bad.

There's a HUGE difference between socal people and oregon people. Sure, there might not be much difference between some assholes in a nice Lake Oswego Neighborhood and some rich orange county suburb, but overall, Californians are selfish assholes. Oregonians are WAY nicer.
You are just trying to butter us up so that we'll let you move back someday. It won't work.
barfo
Yes, over half of them are.Wait...aren't Californians a protected class?
Really? How many New Yorkers own cars?
I have a plan.
Move to the Pearl, be a total asshole for a few years. Complain how Oregonians are slow and everything is boring.
A few years later I'll complain about how the Pearl district is over-run with assholes from California and everything is corporate.
Move Eastside for a year or two and tell my neighbors that it was to get away from the commercialization, gentrification and Californians moving in.
Then move somewhere to the burbs in NW/SW Portland/Lake Oswego/West Linn and use crappy schools and seedy characters everywhere on the Eastside as my excuse.
Then move to Orange County or San Diego, complaining how Oregon is boring as fuck and there's no culture or anything to do and its raining all the time and depressing.

Wow! How did you select this occupation?

FTFYThe average Californian is far more materialistic than the average Portlander.
The average Portlander is far more passive aggressive than the average Californian.
Californians are in a constant race to earn more money to buy more stuff.
Portlanders are in a constant war to stop as much progress as possible, and will get in anyone’s way that is trying to pass them up.
Californians believe being unequal is a form of freedom that is necessary to escape slavery.
Portlanders would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.

College cities tend to swing that way. I mean look at Austin, they're in the middle of Texas and it's basically Portland-lite.You make a valid point about Oregonian vs. Portlander.
But how do you explain the Eugenemaniacs?
