No Roy Amnesty and Oden will be a Blazer

I'm not certain what this statement is supposed to be arguing? In all honesty Kobe looks like he's about a year or two away from the glue factory himself. Just because Roy hit his expiration date 10 years early isn't a valid reason for keeping him on the roster.

I will be happy to explain it to you. Jason Terry has played pretty well this post season. Against Portland, the Lakers and the Thunder. So if you are going to say BRoy was supposed to outplay him then you better expand the list, because he is outplaying a lot of people. Even if he also lacks on the defensive side of the ball.

Like Mark Jackson said last night: "I'll take good offense over good defense anytime".

You do know that the Blazers will still be over cap, even after his contract is completely off the books right? So what advantage are you talking about? We will still have just as much flexibility with or without Roy's contract the next 2 years. If we use the Amnesty Clause, it will only free up a roster spot. Also, we have no idea when we must have to use the Amnesty. If we must use it in a certain time period, like let's say, 6 months after the new CBA is implemented; then absolutely we should use it. If we have a window to decide when to do it and just have 1 shot, then what does it matter if we wait?

We still have to pay the full amount of the contract, so it's not a money savings. The only possible money savings would be from luxury tax.

Because Roy's contract is for four more years. Not two. In that time period we could clear everyone but Aldridge and Matthews off the books if we wanted to. That's pretty decent cap flexibility.

Free agents this summer:
Greg Oden
Patty Mills

Free agents next summer:
Marcus Camby
Andre Miller
Rudy
Batum
Armon Johnson
Chris Johnson

Free Agents in 2013:
Gerald Wallace

Free Agents in 2014:
Babbitt
Williams

Free Agents in 2015:
Roy
Aldridge
Matthews

But what I am saying is we don't have to use the Amnesty right away. Meaning, the "hard cap" doesn't come into effect for another two seasons. Those are two seasons to truly watch Roy and how he progresses or regresses. If there isn't a "time frame" when teams must use their Amnesty, then why do it when it immediately comes available? This is my question to you. Releasing Roy immediately, using your list, shows that we will not be able to have cap flexibility for another 2 years; and that's getting rid of some really key players.

How long was the amnesty period last time? Im pretty sure it won't be two years. Id bet its a month or two.

If that's the case, then your point is much more valid. I suspected it being 6-12 months.

Here is where we are all guessing. The hard cap may be phased in over time - but that doesn't mean the amnesty clause will be. (last time it was "use it or lose it!")

Without Roy's contract the only guaranteed amounts on the Blazers salary cap next summer are Aldridge and Matthews, or roughly the equivalent of 1 max free agent. So we conceivably could add two max free agents next summer.

I would expect us to keep some of Oden/Batum/Wallace, but we would be able to add a free agent if some or all of them left.

Last time it had to be used within a few days of the new CBA.

I think everyone here would agree if we have an extended deadline the team should wait as long as possible. Also if it only effects the luxury tax most of us in the "cut Roy under amnesty" bandwagon would have a very different outlook.

Free Agents in 2013:
Gerald Wallace

Gerald can opt out of his contract next summer. Although its not a guarantee he does, considering guys like Richard Jefferson opted out of ~$14mil deals while playing at a level far below Wallace, I think its likely he does opt out of his $10.5mil final season.

Also the rookies you list may not all have their 3rd and 4th year options picked up by the team, in particular Babbit.

Isn't the whole idea of the new CBA to reduce salaries? I would think that $10.5 may be looking pretty good next summer.

It is not just Roy's contract that is the problem....

How about the fact that he looks terrible or pedestrian for 3-4 games and 75% like himself for 1 game?

How about the fact that he still sees himself as the starting SG for the team, even though his play has not warranted such? Or the fact that he still views himself as the focal point of the team's offense?

You got a guy you are paying a max salary too for four more years, who still thinks he should be a starter and the focal point of the team's offense & feels entitled enough to complain about it. Talk about a chemistry problem. Look if you could cut him, pay him his money and pay him $5-7 million to be a bench player then I would heartily agree to keep him....

But I don't think that is possible for POR to do, nor do I think Roy will readily accept anything but a starting and focal point role going forward...AND THAT is a major problem for this team going forward.

That what Jeff Van Gundy always talks about. The hardest type of player to coach in the NBA is a former star who has declined and can no longer perform like they once did. There isn't any role the coach can give the player that will help the team and make the former star happy. It's a coaches nightmare.

I think the last amnesty was based on teams wanting to save on Lux tax. Basically teams didn't have to use that amnesty because there was a soft cap. If there is really gonna be a hard cap, I think the NBA will give more time to teams to decide to use the amnesty. And since the hard cap won't be implemented for another 2 seasons; I suspect more lead time to decide if a team wants to use it.
