No trades, ride it out....

If I was management, I would just come out and say, "it's a lockout shortened season, the team is not performing the way we thought it would, and we've decided to just ride it out and make the changes this summer. Please bare with us."

Of course, I would say this during the news conference where I announce the termination of Nate's contract

Bump.

This is still the way to go. Don't trade Felton or Crawford for some scrub player. If we can get a draft pick and an expiring, that's great, or another young player making a decent salary is fine too, but nothing stupid like trading for Blake.

Because we don't actually have any idea how power (and maybe more importantly accountability) is divided within the organization I can't help shaking the feeling that Nate has gained a lot of power over personnel (Hence the Nolan Smith pick) and if Nate does have power over some of these decisions he's likely only going to be thinking short-term about his job security and trying to squeeze a playoff run out of this team to save his job ... even though that appears increasingly less likely. If we trade for Steve Blake it will be because Nate has a comfort level with him.

Furthermore, we've got an owner that has had some very serious health problems recently and my guess is that he's as accutely aware of his mortality as he's ever been. This also makes me think that there's more short-term thinking steering the ship. Allen already publicly stated that he'd consider selling the team if they had to endure another rebuild, so unless he's really eager to get out of the basketball business I suspect the decisions that this team makes at the deadline will be more about trying to salvage this season than not.

In short, letting Nate trade for Steve Blake is just the kind of desperation, short-term, myopic move I'd expect from the team at this point.

I like a core of Williams, Aldridge, Batum a lot better than anything we could probably get from trades.

Williams isn't coming to PDX. There are far more attractive teams with the cap money to max him out than the Blazers.

This is the main thing that I never understood about Deron Williams going to the Mavs. Why? I get that it is his hometown and all but I wouldnt want to come "home" and have the team just be ok after Dirk and the others done. And when they are done Williams is right back where he was with the Nets, rebuilding around him. Is going home really worth all that?

The Mavs are competent, successful organization that with an owner that is very involved with the team's success. Why the hell would he want that over the mess that is the Blazers organization right now?

FYI FWIW

The Portland Trail Blazers are starting to implode and that’s got worry ownership and management.

The Blazers have some moveable trade chips, the question is are the Blazers buyers or sellers?

Marcus Camby and his ending $12.8 million contract might return some nice pieces that have years on their contracts, however ownership loves Marcus so will he be allowed to be moved? Marcus is still playing well and a number of playoff teams would love to have Marcus even at his age.

Raymond Felton has fallen out of favor with just about everyone in Portland. He has been shopped around a little. He’d love to be traded, and the Lakers have expressed some level of interest. Raymond may not be the perfect answer for the Lakers’ woes, but if Portland decides to dump and the Lakers cannot find a better deal there could be a match.

Felton is an expiring contract worth $7.56 million, so he is not a long-term risk.

Gerald Wallace has a $9.5 million player option next year and sources say his camp has made it clear that if healthy he’ll opt for Free Agency if only to secure longer term money. That’s means Portland has to decide whether to trade him now or risk losing him to the open market.

As HOOPSWORLD reported yesterday, Jamal Crawford is on the block. In part at the Blazers request, but there is no doubting that the situation Jamal finds himself is not exactly what he signed up for as a free agent.

Sources close to Crawford say he has not asked for a trade, but wouldn’t be opposed to a deal either, especially if it landed him in a less chaotic situation.

There have be reports of unrest inside the Blazers’ locker room and with the team having lost seven of their last ten games and 12 of their last 20 games – major roster shake up seems likely in Portland especially with the team now being four games out of the Playoff picture.

Portland has six games remaining before the trade deadline, if the downward trend continues, look for a fire sale in Portland.

Fuck this noise! If we stand pat, then I'm going to stop watching games. I can't stomach this insane play. I wouldn't care if we actually tried hard and just lost to a better team. Problem is we are the better team on paper and we can't even beat the bad teams.

We need a PG bad! Even if we don't get Nash or Rondo; we gotta find someone that can run the offense without turning the ball over.

No bandaids.

That should be a slogan. I'd much rather watch them suck ass the rest of the season than squander future assets in the hopes of making the 8th seed.

It's not a bandaid. We are talking about giving the fans something to watch. Like I said on another post. I wouldn't mind losing to the better team. I do mind losing to terrible teams. I want effort. I want to watch a team that actually cares about winning. Our management needs to get rid of everyone that has been a problem, including Nate. We need to start over and give us fans something to look forward to.

I don't care how involved Cuban is.... he has been successful because he's had the right pieces. They were LUCKY to get Dirk for Tractor Trailer, Finley was acquired in the trade of Jason Kidd before Cuban got there, and Nash was traded to Dallas for garbage. What big free agents have they signed? What history have they shown for drafting good players other than Dirk? I think it's great that Cuban is so involved, but Dallas is not LA, NY, or Miami. They aren't getting Dwight Howard and Williams will end up being the only good player on that team in a few years.

I guess I sound like a broken record but i still think we should go for Deron Williams at the trade deadline if NJ isn't able to swing a deal for Dwight Howard. I would only do it if we could somehow keep Batum. Would find out what NJ wants and (I would assume draft picks if they can't get Howard and know they are losing Williams) and try to trade Camby, Crawford and Wallace for draft picks and throw in Elliot Williams (and Felton for filler) for Williams. We would then have the three player core the OP referred to and would be the only team with bird rights to Williams. I think it would be problematic to try to sign him as as free agent in the summer.

I don't think we have the ammo to get Williams in a trade. If I was NJ I would be pushing to trade Williams for Rondo. Sure, Rondo has his problems, but he'd be a better consolation than getting nothing and I'm sure Boston would love to have DWill's bird rights.

Anyone that doesn't think we should trade Batum for Williams is insane! I love Batum, but he is hardly "untouchable" if that means trading for Williams. The thing that would worry me is "Would we lose him in the summer?" What if things don't turn around fast enough for Williams to want to stay? That would mean we lose Williams for nothing.

I agree....just not this season. Major overhaul in the offseason.

I don't overvalue Batum. The reason I wouldn't want to include him in the trade is because there is no way Williams would sign long term with Blazers without Batum and Aldridge on the team.

We need to make a trade before the trade deadline. Even if it's 3 players for 2 or 2 for 1. I would do it for Calderon, Nash or Rondo, if possible. But if you can't, then just for a decent PG that can hit the outside shot and not turn the ball over. Then we can sign Mills and have him be our back-up. I'm tired of watching our team have such disfunction at PG. We need PGs!

Unless you give E Will some burn. I think E Will is the perfect compliment for a PG like Williams. In fact, I think E Will is perfect for Rondo as well.

Seems like super teams are the wave of the future and we should have the cap space to offer two max contracts. Fuck it dude, I'd make a pitch to Williams and Howard and see where the chips fall. What other team with cap space can offer max deals to both players and already have a young star of Aldridge's caliber signed long term?

Pipe dream? Absolutely, but why not swing for the fences?

We have no shot at Rondo and Nash without sacrificing our best assets.

Getting Calderon cuts massively into our capspace. Hell no.

Why are you so adamant on making them watchable this season? It's plainly obvious they're 1st round and out at best. (With what they have or with what's reasonably available)

Well, that's a good point, Boston might be the ideal partner for NJ on this; but would they be sure he would sing (or sign) with them?

Supposedly Boston wants Rondo gone really bad, and I'm sure they'd rather have the inside track on Williams than to deal Rondo for some scrubs. Is there a chance he would leave? Sure, but that would be a lot of money to leave on the table.
