How can Batums shoulder be so bad yet take till the night before the season begins to have surgery? Did they not know after "their doctors examined him" that this would be a problem? I cant say im shocked after countless oden "bruises" that led to microfracture and a month of missed games. But seriously... it didn't occur to them that batum wasn't getting better? I realize the homers will scream im being negative but cmon... nobody knew this before today? How was batum allowed to play in that euro league like this when we are about to embark on such a huge season? Its just terrible judgement on pritchards part, and the blazers trainers/doctors. And with all that... KP drops IME from the roster? A guy that can play solid defense. instead we will go with outlaw????? Thats almost too funny to write. Are we trying to lose or is good ole KP over rated? Im sorry but this is hard to believe that nobody else saw this coming a mile away.

The medical staff sucks. Seriously.

And you should know by now that Travis, along with Blake, are KP's "boys" and probably wont trade them unless it's insanely in our favor.

You know, it's just possible that he hurt his shoulder worse this time.

Where did you guys get your medical degrees and just why is it that you so-called fans are always assuming the worst about the Blazers' management?

Sometimes I think getting a bag of chips back would be insanely in our favor!

We had no choice but to keep outlaw, that was decided in July.

Batum said on courtside today that he could have played through this season and gotten it fixed next summer, and then he said something in an accent that I couldn't understand.

My question is do our player contracts give KP the power to ban them form participating in sports outside the regular season... if they do not have that clause there's not much he can do but change all future contracts to include that in case this happens again. This injury goes back something like 7 months, if it is written up so that he can stop them, and they sign it for their fat paycheck, then I think you've got something.

He said it has been injured and he has been in pain everyday for 7 months...

It's a good thing we didn't trade Travis. I think the team will be ok. It gives us a chance to see what we have in Martell and it gives Rudy more PT. It could relieve some potential problems.

And unless Pritchard has the power to make players have surgery then you should get off his back.

THIS. You know the difference between doctors and vets is? the doctor can ask their patients what hurts. If batum isn't telling people the pain is getting worse, the doctor's aren't going to know. DOCTORS ARE NOT PSYCHIC.

How many of you think either Pendergraph or MIlls will be dumped now to bring in Ime?

Well they brought him back from Eurobasket to examine his shoulder so they knew something...

I'm no math major, but I'm pretty sure I can count to one...

Joking aside, you do have to wonder about KP's judgement in letting our Euro boys play in a non-Olympics year. Also the medical staff has looked a bit shaky (Blake's shoulder, Oden's Maggette knee injury, Webster too quick comeback and now Batum's shoulder) I have to agree.

Edit: Apparently KP has no say if they play or not. I think the team should request it of them at the least. Even if they can't compel them to not play you can at least ask.

and the french doctors thought he was okay too. Maybe they had their own agenda, but that seems unlikely to me. What with Batum probably being able to sue them for bad information... This is really a troll trying to stir up an argument that's not there.

I'm not placing the blame on anyone. I'm just pointing out the fact that Nic said the pain has been there for 7 months. He also said he could have played through the pain and waited til this off season to correct it so maybe it's not as serious of an injury as we might think...? The recovery time is really long though..

Injuries happen. Learn to deal with it or stop watching sports.

For all the idiots dissing Pritchard - this is EXACTLY why he assembled such a deep roster. Two days ago you were bitching about too many players, not enough minutes and needing a consolidation trade. Now, one player goes down and it's the end of the world. If we were two deep yesterday, losing one player doesn't make us too "shallow" today.

When he came back from France they did an MRI. That would have revealed something. Because the injury never got better. That shoulder has been damaged for a long time and everyone knew it. Nic chose to play on it and predictably it got worse. A reporter tried to pin Nate down today and inquired several times about when the injury occurred. Nate always referred to it as "soreness" rather than injury in his attempts to dodge the question. It sure sounded to me like he was hiding something....like maybe he knew about the tear months ago, but wasn't willing to admit to having Batum play with anything other than "soreness".

If a player needs medical treatment to play, and they refuse treatment, it seems that would be breach of contract. There has to be something in the CBA that covers the issue.

As for relieving a potential problem.....let's just say I strongly disagree. Webster and an injured Rudy are no substitute for a healthy Batum.

Pritchard can't prevent Euro players from playing for their national teams. Just like the NBA can't prevent players from playing for Team USA. It would be nice to have a boogieman to blame Batum's injury on but we don't have one.

Shit happens.

tell that to joakim noah

In fact, at first, I didn't want to have surgery. Kevin Pritchard joined us in the doctor's office, we spoke and he told me “Are you sure that you can really play the whole season like that?” And I kept saying yes. I didn't want to be out for three months at the start of the season. But I can't continue. They told me: “We don't want you to be out, but it's not just the player we're talking to, it's also you, the person and you're health above all. We don't want you to be out, but...”
from his blog. it is not KP's staff, it is clearly a young kid not wanting to be the "wuss" and admit something is wrong.

Just to clarify my own opinion on Pritchard. My only criticisms of Pritchard are that it appears he might: over value players, have trouble closing trades (possibly because people don't like him or his own over valuation of assets), and he might have assembled too much talent if there is such a thing (Batum would seem to render this false, but there is still a log jam). Now these are all up for debate and aren't HARSH criticisms, but I think reasonable ones.

I think Pritchard was masterful in his drafting and rebuilding of this team. His eye for talent is great although it sucks he passed on Millsap and Dejuan Blair. He can't nab ALL the talent in drafts so you can't fault him there. I hope he is able to pull off any final trades that are necessary. Overall I give Pritchard an A to A-. If the Outlaw for Harris or Conley trades were passed on I might have to down grade him.

Now dissing Nate that's totally different. I have a serious bone to pick with him, but alas Roy loves him.

I've long had my doubts about our medical staff.

The medical staff sucks. Seriously.

You guys are ridiculous to the point of embarassment. How can you even entertain the notion that the medical staff isn't damn good at their job? You think they're just picking people off the street and seeing if they know how to tape an ankle? I mean, what the fuck do you know, right?

And you're even more ridiculous, which I didn't even know was possible until reading your post. Do you honestly think the team would let one of their multi-million dollar investments and key part of the roster continue to play on a fucking tear? And does anyone really think they'd want Batum to have surgery if it wasn't necessary? Give these people just the tiniest amount of credit. Maybe they know how to do their jobs. And maybe injuries just happen sometimes. Maybe try to deal with this reality of sports in some way other than throwing the front office, coaching staff, and medical staff under the bus. It's like if anything unfortunate happens then everyone must be totally incompetent.

really maxi? I mean you think this was handled well?

sorry that i cant buy into the homerism that this was handled well....cause it wasnt.

and in all honesty... our medical staff seems wrong way more then they are right....

ask oden, ask miles, ask zach, ask batum, ask webster, ask DA, ask ratliff

our medical staff blows.

Nic re-injured the shoulder in practice a couple days ago. That's when he realized he couldn't play through the pain. I don't think you can blame the team's medical staff.
