Noah Vonleh - thoughts

I'm trying not to get too excited about his potential until we know whether he's gonna be here long term. But if he's still a Blazer after tomorrow night, I think he's here to stay!

I know he's compared himself to LA with the way he play's. I also know that the Blazers were rumored to being interested in him last year at this very time. If that is the case, he could be here long term.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Nbadraft.net from last year:

Outlook: Could turn into a huge threat on both the pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop due to his mobility, strength and touch … His upside is potentially at All-Star or borderline All-Star level … Seen as a likely top 10 pick and a relative lock for the lottery ... A hard working kid with a lot of upside, the only drawback is that he may take time for things to click and could lose confidence if he is not successful in his first 2-3 seasons. A candidate to disappoint initially and break out with his second NBA team ...

That profile was written before the season started - when he was 17.

I like his upside numbers-wise. He's already a 38.5% 3pt shooter, for example. He's a slightly above average defender at 19. He doesn't foul a lot (2.8 per 36).

Hell, for shits and giggles, here is compared to Batum last season.

He's worth keeping for two or three years.

Don't think you can judge too much from last year's numbers at all. Only played 25 games an pretty much only played garbage time with garbage players against garbage players.

Yeah but garbage time isn't defense time, and his DRtg is pretty decent. At least he's trying out there.

By all accounts he's got a high motor and great work ethic. Might be a case of lotta movement, little results.....at least for now. But its certainly better than the alternative.

High motor guys are worth the trouble more often than low motor guys... he's a project, but I'm not too broken up over trading Batum for the opportunity to play this scratch-it ticket.

Well, I hope he turns out. Apparently, Aldridge is gone, per ESPN. So, it looks like either he or Biebs is our starting PF.

Good upside for some team. Us if we keep him, or another if we deal him

Just keep in mind of how young he is.

He's only three months older than Karl Towns.

I just watch the highlights posted on Oregonlive. I think he and Leonard could work well together in another year or two. Vonleh looks to be a pretty good shot blocker, a quick leaper, good enough touch from the outside to step outside if need be, but willing to attack the rim.

I hate taking a step back next year if we lose LMA, but I think those two give us a good young foundation with their length and hops and shooting skills for bigs. Maybe get a bigger SF to go with them. Like a Stanley Johnson type.

Thanks for the info, folks! I'm starting to get excited about Vonleh. Specifically a Vonleh/Leonard front court in 16/17!
We've got some good front court potential - let LMA walk!

Vonleh is an intriguing prospect...but is he worth the risk? He has already been said to not be ready for the NBA...yet he hasn't played a lot so he is a bit of a mystery as to what his potential really is. While he may be good years away...he is not an Aldridge replacement. I don't see us starting him anytime soon...it is exciting to think he might be a nice force off the bench...I think I am in denile...Im gonna go change his rating to 78 on NBA 2k15...lol

Watching his Indiana highlights I see a big guy making plays on the defensive end and then coming down and draining 3's

Had a Draymond Green feel to it

Guys built like Noah Vonleh are increasingly more and more the future of the NBA.

In terms of style I see a young version of Detroit's McDyess -- Vonleh's obviously more athletic than this version of AM but his mid-range game was money.

Yesterday I was listening to a Utah radio feed of the draft and an NBA weight program has done wonders for their big guys.

For one, it has improved their posture. Rudy Gobert came into his rookie season with a 9'7" reach -- now a full 9'9" reach. That's not even fair. That's the tallest in DX's database.

Vonleh's numbers could be quite different considering how young he was:

6'8" w/o shoes | 6'9.5" w/shoes | 7'4.25" wingspan | 245 lbs. | 9'0" reach | 18 years old

I totally agree with this, the NBA continues to move away from the days of big plodding C's that can't shoot - that's why I think we aren't really interested in Hibbert

Thanks! I'm excited about this kid. I think it's now imperative that we keep Kaman - he now has TWO bigs to develop! If Vonleh improves at everything he's already known for, he could be the next best thing to Cousins...and we'd have that "Cousins"/Leonard pairing that I want so badly.

Including Vonleh in the deal was just a PR stunt. "Look, we traded Batum for a top 10 pick!"

The kid may have great measurements - but he has about 1/10 the skills of a guy like RoLo or Plumlee. The NBA calls guys like Vonleh a "project." MLB calls them "tools goofs." The vast majority of these guys sink like a lead weight and don't even leave a ripple to mark their passage.

Watching film on this kid..(he's 19, not 18) what impressed me was his rebounding instincts. Reminded me of Barkley. Guy seems to thrive in traffic and come up with the 50-50 balls. Seems to have a higher BBIQ than TRob and a quick release with his chip shots around the rim. I like him
