This is big news! I don't care what Nordstrom or anyone else says, no company wants to close a store. Especially big company's that have been around for a long time.

I don't know the answers to these but my guess is the major networks have the top shows and that the cast of those shows are predominately white if not all white. Of course there will likely be the token black person on the show, but rarely are they the stars of the show.

TV shows and networks are all about targeting demographics for ratings. You really don't think they target white people? White people are the largest and most lucrative demographic out there. You know advertisers are asking the networks for the demographic ratings in these areas.

The managers of the Lloyd Center mall said its owners would buy the anchor space Nordstrom will vacate early next year and wrap it into a recently announced renovation plan.
Cypress Equities did not elaborate on plans for the space, currently owned rather than leased by Nordstrom, but it's not likely to be another 149,000-square-foot department store.
"We believe the Nordstrom building might better serve Lloyd Center shoppers if it featured alternative uses," Chris Maguire, Cypress' chief executive, said in a statement. "Our leasing team is exploring other retail and service options that will not only complement the mall’s existing merchant mix, but provide our shoppers with unique offerings not available at other Portland-area shopping centers."
It said an "exciting announcement" about the plans would come later this year.
The terms of the transaction weren't disclosed, but Cypress said it would take possession of the Nordstrom place in January 2015, when the store is expected to close.
Last week, Cypress announced plans to remodel two of its exterior entrances to open the mall to pedestrians.

I don't know the answers to these but my guess is the major networks have the top shows and that the cast of those shows are predominately white if not all white. Of course there will likely be the token black person on the show, but rarely are they the stars of the show.

Most tv shows have maybe 5 or 6 regular roles.

Blacks make up about 12% of America's population.

So any show with a black actor in a regular recurring role is likely under-representing white people.

The anchor department store is an anachronism. The new model is more of an H&M-type store, where these stores are much smaller. In the future, you'll see these stores break up into boutiques across a mall. They need to become much more nimble and flexible.

Washington Square did a successful conversion of the former Nordstrom into a food court. Lloyd Center and Vancouver Mall are two different types of malls serving different segments. It will be interesting to see what each does.

The hottest malls right now in LA are the grove (although 10 years old they had just done a major remodel and the Americana in Glendale. Both are anchored by Nordstroms with a bunch of upscale boutiques. Almost always crowded with foot traffic.

nordstroms is as strong as ever, it just seems that whole area is going to be economically crippled in the future with the failed jumptown project and the failed trader joes, the message is clear: they do not want to develop or improve NE Portland. I was a stockboy at that Nordstrom and then work there as a salesperson during school breaks and at night for sales. An awesome job and a great learning experience in terms of customer service. And to this day, my clothes drawers are perfect because I can still fold like a mofo.

They seem to be doing fine. Many are racks but hey are still opening new stores. Its more indicative of the potential growth in that area. These small box retailers like h&m are suffering brand dilution due to competition.

The newer upscale department stores have been partnering with upscale retailers to open up mini boutiques within their store. For example, the downtown Nordstroms has Gucci inside. Newer stores have a topshop/topman inside them. The better stores evolve (unless they are run into the ground by idiots like JC Penney)

Targets are increasingly become anchor tenants in some malls now.
