(I'm guessing by the looks of that nasty fall...perhaps, a ruptured tendon...)

....have the Blazers chances of winning this series significantly gone up?

Nah, Mutombo wasn't really that key in this series. He was actually hurting them with his play against Oden. Maybe if they move on to the next round though.

It'll be interesting to see how this continues to pan out when Yao is out of games.

Yeah, but it forces them to play Yao/Hayes more.

It really messes up their rotation. It could be huge.

Agree. You don't want Yao taking a huge portion of minutes over a prolonged period of time. If it doesn't hurt them in this series it could down the line. Motumbo was still a serviceable player too. The biggest key is that before the Rockets could match Por's tall frontline, now after Yao they've only got Landry (6'9) and Hayes (6'6).

Which is worthless with all our big men on the bench in foul trouble.

It hurts their ability to match up with Portland's length on the second unit, but Mutombo wasn't really part of their regular rotation. He played less than 100 minutes all season.

I was really sad to see Deke go out that way. It's probably the last time he'll ever step on an NBA floor as a player. For such a good player and model human being, it's a shame that he went down like that.

This injury will help us if Oden is able to capitalize against Houston's smaller bigs. a 4 point night won't help us in Houston.

The stat line tonight was that our centers matched their center. Against Yao Ming in his prime, I'll take that!

No centers were offensive forces tonight. But Oden can get going, and score in double figures for sure, doing a lot of damage inside. I think tonight was VERY good for his confidence.

Yup, I feel the same way. As soon as it happened it was like an official end to an era. It sucks to see that happen.

I think it hurts the Rockets big time since we have so much length. Without Yao, they're very small. It looked like we were going to capitalize on that at the end of the 3rd but then the Rockets when on a 7-0 to close out the quarter.

Has there been any official word on Mutombo's injury? Is he actually done for the series?

Agreed 100%. If this is career ending, I hope someone (Houston) makes him a highly paid assistant coach. Most of what you pay him will be put to good use helping others. Hell, I'd be all for the Blazers hiring him to help Greg work on his defense (blocking shots without committing so many fouls).

He's one of the most generous, compassionate people on this planet. The world needs more Dikembe Mutombos.

He's done for his career. He made that clear in the post game interview on local television.

Dikembe Mutombo has officially wagged his last finger. And you guys underestimate the impact this will have on the Rockets. He was our best rebounder and shot blocker, despite being 42 years old, and the Rockets don't have the necessary size to matchups with Blazers (or the Lakers, for that matter) with him gone. The series is yours for the taking.

From a rockets forum

Question to mutombo: Is basketball over this season?
Answer: Basketball is over for my career.

in honor of mutombo

I feel for you, man. Sorry to see Mutombo go down. Don't know if we can take the series, though. You guys are still a tough bunch of hombres.

Sorry to hear it. Great player. Great person. I hate to see him go out this way.

The Blazers don't gain much ground when Yao is out of the game. That was true during the regular season as well. In fact, today Yao was -1. We don't seem to be able to capitalize.

Funny, because if someone told you that a McGradyless, Mingless Rockets team could play us neck and neck at home, you'd think our team sucked.

I don't know what it is about this Rockets team, but they just give us fits. I really doubt Mutumbo going out will have any affect.

Some teams just match up better with other teams. The Rockets are one of the only teams in the league with a center that can outmuscle Joel. They have defenders that can stop our three point shooters. They have quick guards who can get around our guards. They have rebounding, defense, and shooters.

This is all bullshit. We should sweep them and blow them out by 20 every night because the Blazers are my favorite team.

How can a guy who played 9 games and 96 minutes all year have been that big of factor?

Best rebounder and shot blocker? The guy had 33 rebounds and 11 blocks for THE SEASON. Series ours for the taking? Maybe if Yao left on a stretcher . . . . Deke just wasn't going to impact this series much. You'll get by just fine with Yao, Scola, & Landry.

They match up just fine with Joel, Oden, & LA.

It looked pretty bad from inside the arena. But I'm glad Blazer fans stayed classy in the heat of the moment and gave him that ovation. And if Yao gets in any foul trouble throughout the series, I don't think they have enough big guys to handle LaMarcus and Greg on the post. Especially Greg, who can just overpower anyone on the Rockets except Yao.

This does make the series take on a whole new face now. Yao is going to have to play extended minutes now. Portland needs to take one in Houston to return the favor and get back home court.

GO BLAZERS!

man, as soon as I saw him go down, I knew it was season ending. I was ust thinking, no..no..no..this is not good. i felt so bad for him and wish injury on no player.

If Greg can stay on the floor, I'll buy this. Problem is, even when he isn't guarding Yao (who can seemingly drawl a foul on Greg EVERY possesion when he tries) Greg is having to pick up Brooks, Wafer, or Lowry who are getting to the basket at will.

That put back dunk to make it 89-89 was sweet. Wouldn't mind seeing more of that. Is it possible that last sequence he had in the 4th quarter might build his confidence a little?

Me too. But I have one exception to that rule . . . Kobe.

Wouldn't shed a tear watching that guy fall the the floor clutching his knee.
