Trail Blazers center Fabricio Oberto has announced today that he has retired from the game of basketball due to recurrent palpitations related to a prior cardiac condition.

Oberto experienced lightheadedness and dizziness during the first half of Portland’s game at Milwaukee on Nov. 2.

"I made this decision to put my health and my family in front of basketball," said Oberto. "It was a tough decision to make after playing for so many years, but it was the right one."

In his sixth season in the NBA, Oberto appeared in each of Portland’s first five games, averaging 1.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 9.0 minutes.

“We want to thank Fabricio for his professionalism and hard work during his short time here,” said Trail Blazers General Manager Rich Cho. “It's unfortunate to lose him, but we respect his decision to do what's best for his health and his family.”

But, obviously this was the right move for Oberto. No reason to jeopardize your life.

Yeah, good for him to do what's best for him. Weird for Portland, because they just can't seem to catch a break.

Well, we have a spot for Jerryd now.

Apparently, Dwayne Jones is available.

Two questions: Do we still pay his full salary? Does this free up a roster spot to get another big?

On a related note, I think this pushes the Blazers past the injury exception limit. Ten day contract coming soon!

EDIT: NM, roster is at 14 so it doesn't matter.

Wow.. this was totally out of the blue. He was actually an adequate backup for now until Joel comes back.

Wow. It's a bummer for him... he's gotta take care of himself.

The cold/calculating/Blazers fan in me can't say he'll miss his 0.9 PER, of course.

Is Dampier still available? Or a time machine to go back a week and sign him?

Ed O.

Bad news on one side.

Good news is that Joel and Greg are essentially 100% and ready to come back, they are just waiting for the right "moment" to bring them back. I have a feeling we could see one of them start much sooner than expected.

You have to wonder if Damipier would even accept a one year contact.

Maybe Joel, but I don't think we've seen or heard anything to suggest Greg is anywhere close to getting back on the court.

Good for him.

As for the Blazers, with the way LaMarcus is playing right now, he can easily slide over to the 5 with Cunningham and Batum getting a few more minutes. Maybe even Babbitt can help out a bit? I see this as a non issue

Good decision by Oberto. Weird day, for sure.

Time to get a plane to Seoul and bring back Ha. Or send NOH a pick for Bayless.
