So tomorrow we can go onto the federal website and price out health care? I really am not up to speed on all the changes. I already have a cheap plan at work so I assume I won't be able to save anything but I'm curious.

I have friends with no insurance so for those people I know this could possibly really help them out.

Please post any ideas you have of how people can save on their health care or health insurance costs. Sure many of us have reservations on a macro level how good these policies are but on an individual level everyone here should do the best to make the most of their situation.

Great thread idea. I have health insurance with my employer and probably will keep, but I'll check the Affordable Care prices and coverage and post it here to compare.

For those in Oregon, it's the state, not the federal, providing the website/exchanges. Go to coveroregon.com

compare with what you have. Key features are co-pays, allowable expenses, allowable procedures, exceptions, prescription coverage, hospitalization coverage, emergency room coverage, accessibility to personal doctor. Dont let broad stroke terms fool you, Bronze is a 40 percent deductible, silver is 30%, gold is 20% and platinum is still 10%...good luck.

I'm unaffected since my company plans to keep its current healthcare offering and it's cheaper and more than adequate to meet my needs.

Thanks for posting that. I was trying to find the difference.

Yup, but reportedly they won't have the information online for the average schmuck to use until around the middle of the month. Until then you have to contact an agent.

OPB tonight was talking about that fact, also made mention of more plans coming into play. The real vampires in this whole equation are the insurance companies.

That's what this ACA was trying to address in the first place. I don't think they actually did a very good job of it though.

Not to divulge insider information but premiums will probably drop next year. The state refused to allow competitive pricing the first year and that is what drives the price down.

the entire concept is flawed. If the intent was to protect consumers, then they should have addressed the issue, not force everyone to participate.

yeah..works with gas prices...

I have a hard time believing that they will give up anything..kind of like the government, when they realize an income stream, they tap it for as much as they can

So far I haven't even seen any plan worth buying, the coverage has to be a cruel joke.

That has been completely obvious to many of us from the beginning.

And trying to address the insurance companies was just one of the many failed excuses for launching the ACA. It simply depended on which month, and which of the claims of the ACA had been shown to be false most recently.

But, I still think it is a step in the right direction. As far as I can tell, the Republican party did not offer any direct solution other than the aspects which were placed into the ACA, IE forced buy in and tort reform.

So you believe healthcare should be a government regulated monopoly? Good luck with that!

If you want to put it that way, yes. Seems to work fine for the rest of the civilized world. Or should I say, for the civilized world.

When I say "good luck with that"; I am not saying it won't work; but your precious "liberal party" gets most of its money from pharma. They would never support this

Never is a very long time. Things in this country change slowly, but they do change.

Well yeah, if the Pharma companies stop giving them money. The Dems are just as bad as the Reps in terms with swaying to the groups that give them the most money.

It's a problem, I agree with you. Need better campaign finance laws. Unfortunately the Supremes have us going the wrong direction there.

I disagree.

I decided to look just out of curiosity (my coverage is 100% employer paid). There are LOTS of cheaper options available to me. Actually, I just sorted the list and of 80 options, only 5 of them are more expensive than what I currently have. There are 3 platinum level plans that are cheaper, and 16 gold plans that are cheaper.
I'm actually shocked at just how inexpensive these plans are.

Really! My former employer had dropped all of us retirees. It appears like I have three plans to choose from. Boy what bath we get from this. For 53 years I have been paying nothing, now it looks like $239 a piece per month for my wife and I plus the $105 a month each for Medicare. The crappy part is though, it still leaves $400 a day co pay if you need to go in the hospital. I can't see the point in buying that insurance, might as well just
take the Medicare and pay the $1100 hundred Hospital deductible. I hope Obama gets his just reward for this crap, I think it was criminal to tax employers for the people they are covering.

Consumer's Union has set up a free confidential web site for information: www.healthlawhelper.org. In Spanish, aseguratusalud.org. It asks questions about family size, income range, current insurance situation, and gives information on waht if anything you need to do. Also, a lot of state have web sites, don't know where you live, try googling for your state's exchanges, or you can look at www.healthcare.gov.
