Ironic as it sounds today, but if Greg can sustain this kind of play - and with Yao out and Shaq back to the East....does G.O. have a shot to make the All Stars?

:dunno:

If he can sustain this, yes. I don't want to be a negative nancy, but he played out of his mind (23 points or something like that) against Sacto last year. But I like this year's model better than last year's as far as offensive moves go.

Can we have this conversation in mid-December? Not only am I a little bit superstitious about jumping the gun on these kinds of projections, this was a preseason game against an overmatched foe.

He could, earlier today i read a article where George Karl said that he thought Nene could make the allstar team this year. If Nene can do it why not Greg

I look forward to having this conversation in December.

There is a 100% chance Oden will make the all-star team.... if we play the kings 40 times before the break.
:biglaugh:

He may make it anyway, but he hasn't faced stiff competition yet.

So do I (honestly). Right now it just smacks of all the ridiculous and rampant talk I keep hearing about a Blazers dynasty -- no first title = no talk about dynasties. Oden = two injury riddled seasons and one very promising preseason game = no talk about all-star games (yet).

What, so Martell Webster's 14 point game against Sacto last year means nothing? :devilwink:

I'd settle for Joel making it, Greg's a few years away still.

No, that game means everything ... just like his 24 point quarter against the Jizz pretty much guarantees he should be an all-star this year. That's how this works.

Way too premature.

Of course it is (premature), but I'm simply speculating. Who's who in the West at the 5?

Bynum (Lakers) (I predict he'll be sitting with knee problems by December 1st);

Who else is out there in the West? Stoudamire? Okafor? Duncan? Al Jefferson, maybe

Just curious, but do you ever get tired of playing the fool? Frankly it must be exhausting to keep up this act year, after year, after year ...

Nene did impress me last year! I'd have to have him high up on the pre-season favorite list to make the All Star squad.

I just figure that I might as well be the first to predict Oden as a West All Star Center for 09-10!

If he stays healthy and stays out of foul trouble (hey, the replacement refs might not call him as tight!?! LOL), he will be in consideration.

Absolutely. With Shaq in the East and Yao most likely out for the season, it's between Greg, Andrew, and Okafor. Am I missing anyone? I think Oden even has a chance of starting.

I loved how Greg looked tonight. He showed some real quickness on a turnaround post-up that left Hawes in the dust in the first half. His vertical was real nice, and he just looked a lot more confident without the deer in the headlights look that he had sometimes last season.

I don't know if he can be an All-Star this year, but he's made some real strides this summer. It was good for his confidence to solidify everything he did this summer to come out and have a showing like this.

You forgot Duncan ...

I think Oden has a good chance of being worthy of the All-Star game. Whether he actually goes or not, if he does achieve that level, is harder to predict. He wasn't that far off on a per-minute basis last year. While it's more difficult to sustain a level of play for more minutes, Oden is also going to be in much better physical shape. I can imagine a 20 PER season with starter minutes.

I think that Bynum will wind up with bad knees and Okafor? meh. I think the challenge comes from Nene and Al Jefferson of Minny, believe it or not!

Portland has a hard time getting a player into the starting lineup - thus, Bynum may get selected because he plays in LA! So Greg's going to have to earn it. He'll have to start 85% of the games through the break; lead the West in blocks; be in the top 10 in the West in rebounds; and avoid fouling out of more than 10 games through the break. And if he can muster an average of 13 points + per game - he's in.

Too much to ask?

After the past two year - yes, no doubt. But he CAN DO IT. And Andre Miller and LMA's games are going to help this to come to fruition.

First half stats:

For Greg to make the West All Stars

Starts 32 of 41 games+
Misses fewer than 3 games due to injury, etc.
Fouls out in 10 or fewer of these games
Tops in the West in Blocked Shots (3.1 per game)
Averages 12.6 boards
Averages 14.2 points
Blazers 1st in the Northwest Division at the break by 4 games or more

Greg's an All Star!

What do you think???

All I know is it's painfully obvious that Dejuan Blair will be starting at PF on the allstar team. 100% sure it happens due to tonights exhibition.

LOL

Yeh, I too was miffed that we passed (twice) on him! He's a stud. Imagine Blair coming off the bench for LMA? And what do we have instead? Howard! That hurts.

At the very least, Oden has a realistic shot at playing in the Rookie-Sophomore game.

BNM

nene is underrated
no doubt, dude was pretty beastly last year. His blocks and steals #'s reflect how quick he is.

In no particular order, the main guys for the AS Center spots in the West this year are Nene, Amare, Okafor, Bynum, and Greg. Stoudamire might produce the best numbers but will probably be on the one team (of those guys) outside the playoff picture.

STOMP

I want to nominate Martell for the all star game, for the 24 pt. Quarter, two years ago.

:)

Greg's got a shot if that offense continues to look as good as did last night!

Duncan is a PF and is listed as such on the ballot. I did forget Amare though, who I believe is listed as a C.

What? Amare is listed as a ****?
:biglaugh:

EDIT - when did this site start filtering bad words?

Let's shoot for playing consistent basketball and staying in the game first. Then we can talk about being an allstar. :D

That one is the be-all, end-all of bad words, though. I'm offended by very little language-wise, but that one offends me unless I hear it from a Brit, where the accent and cultural definition difference make it almost but not quite okay.
