From what I understand, if we don't get their pick this year, then we get next Year's lottery protects to 1-2. So if the Blazers have a plan B to package this pick with players, we still might be fine if we don't get this summer's NJ pick. They are not getting Howard next year, so I don't see how they'll be much better next season.

I think we'll package the NJ pick plus to trade for Rondo.

Kendall Marshall on fire in the first half

13pts/6asts with 7min to play in the 1st half

Marshal looks good in the first half my only worry is his defensive quickness but he looks great out there. I kind of want him maybe with our pick.

Yeah, this sucks. No more rooting for NJ to lose. They are going to lose us right out of their lottery pick. I like them at 6th just fine (70% chance we get their pick, iirc).

I'm rooting for them to lose every game. I'll take the chance of perhaps getting the 4th or 5th pick... or getting their pick next year. I don't want to have them make a run at the playoffs and us pick 10th or 12th or something with their pick.

Ed O.

Gerald playing really well today, but Nets still losing.

I'm worried they are going to lose there way into the top 3!

Man this Irving kid is amazing. Reminds me Brandon with his poise.

Tie game 4 mins left.

Irving is great isn't he? Just 19 years old!

I remember watching 1 game of his at Duke and isntantly thinking he was going to be a star. Coach K said he was the one freshman he ever had that he never had to chew out because he thought exactly like him.

Oh freaking rookie call. Carry? Really refs? That was an amazing move by Irving.

Still tie game 1min left.

What I'm starting to look for after watching more college ball these last few years than ever before, is for guys that make the game easy. I don't care about guys like Jimmer who take and make ridiculous shots in college. Because that skill doesn't transfer to the NBA. The guys that can get layups in traffic and lull defenses to sleep (like Lamb or Rivers) are the ones that are more likely to have success in the NBA.

Cavs up 6. Freakin Nets are gonna lose their way into the top 3.

obviously there's no way they get to #1. worst case scenario at either 2 or 3 we still have more or less a coin flip for their pick.

So I'm confused here. Will NJ even send anyone to the lottery to stand in in-case the pick becomes top 3? Say they end up with the 4th worst record (and 4th best chance of landing #1), will they have a representative there, or will it just be us?

Wow that's a really good question! I don't know

For example, in 03, Memphis traded Detroit their top 1 protected pick. They landed at #2, and CLE got #1, and that pick went to DET (Darko). But Jerry West was out repping the Grizz in the lottery and was visibly disappointed when they didn't get #1 (Lebron).

I thought about that too. I think they will have a rep there. Makes the most sense to me. I vaguely remember a similar situation the past few years where the team had a rep there and didnt get the pick cause it fell outside the protection

Yeah they definitely send a rep to the lottery. They have their pick until the ping pong ball results are revealed.

Don't want to bring up bad memories but, what if nj got the worst possible record. That would give them the best shot at a top three pick. What if during the draft lotto, we see them fall all the way to the 4th pick? Would it feel like we felt when we won the first pick in 07?

Nothing will ever again feel like that. One pop of the cherry. The subsequent disappointment is just to great to ever be that optimistic again, ever, about anything. It would still feel pretty good though, but more like relieved than mind blowingly ecstatic.

So like a crack addict that can never get his first high? Chasing the glass dragon?

They are going to have a hard time getting below the Hornets, Wizards, and especially the Bobcats, but if they just don't win a game the rest of the season it will suck.

30% chance of them landing in top 3 now
I saw Tom Penn talking about this on ESPN, and he said the only way the Nets get the pick is if they WIN the lottery. In other words, if they get the #1 pick.

He might have meant if they "win" the lottery to move into the top 3 (only the top 3 are done by lottery, the rest fall in place by record).

If he really meant it's top-1 protected then he's almost certainly wrong. It'd be great if he weren't, but I'm pretty sure he would be.

That's what he meant. Basically, New Jersey won't be able move up in the draft without "winning" the lottery. Whether that's the first, second, or third pick is determined by when your balls came up after 'winning' the lottery. They can't move up in the draft without some lucky balls bouncing their way.

As crappy as NJ has been playing, you have to imagine at some point soon, management will pass the edict down to the coaches that the team should tank. They are going to lose D-Will regardless, IMO. I wouldn't be surprised in G-Dub wanted to walk. Kris Humphries will likely try to walk. Lopez likely will be the one piece remaining, since he is a RFA. The guys who are FA's won't just freely tank because they're playing for a contract, but that won't stop coaches from being more aware of the overall situation, and making decisions based around tanking.

They cannot afford to lose one of the few assets they have. So I could see them putting everything they have into losing, just to try to land in the Top-3 and keep their pick.

This was my one fear about the pick - that we won't get it until next year. On the other hand, I do believe that would mean more cap room (since don't picks have cap holds?). But I'm impatient and don't want to wait.

they still wouldn't catch the bobcats. as noted even the worst case for us (they finish 2 or 3) is still a coin flip for the pick.

that said i think 4-6 would be the ideal position for them to finish for us based on odds vs. what the likely pick would be, so unlike Ed O i would prefer it if they won at least a few more games. i would rather have better odds at #5-7 than hope for #4, which best case is still only a 32% chance for us to end up with.

As of right now we have the #4 and #9 pick! I know the lottery could mess shit up, but we might be getting a couple studs this summer!

Or no lottery picks this year or next
