How you figure? A win makes Jersey worse? I want them to be in the #6-#7 spot. I don't want them to be #3-#4. That would be a terrible situation for us. They would have over 50% to land a top 3 pick.

Basically we want New Jersey at the #6-#7 range. They have less than 1.5-3.5% chance of getting the top 3 pick. If they go to #5, their chances are 10%. If they are #4, then their chances are around 50%.

So in other words, if you want to tank, then you want Jersey to win. They are #5 right now.
 
I want Jersey to finish 5th and the Blazers to finish 10th. Make it happen HCP! I know you know people!

you have the right idea, but your numbers are way off.

chances of NJ winning a top 3 spot and us losing the pick (roughly, varies a little depending on which chart you look at):

4th 37%
5th 29%
6th 22%
7th 15%

so there's still some significant danger of losing the pick at 5-7

THE 4TH WORST TEAM IS ONLY RARELY GOING TO END UP WITH THE 4TH PICK

4th almost invariably ends up either winning a top 3 spot (in which case we lose the pick) OR getting bumped back to 5th or 6th,or even rarely 7th by teams behind them winning, SO... they might as well finish 5-7 which decreases thier odds of winning a top 3. there is no significant advantage to them finishing 4th. in poker terms it's -EV.

we should lose tonight.

Well, crap. I thought it was 4th = 29%, and I wasn't comfortable with that. This is even worse. I definitely don't want them finishing 4th. I'll be at the game rooting for the Blazers to play well, then quietly hoping for the Nyets to pull out the win at the end.

I'm rooting for a Blazers win. I want the Nets to finish with the 3rd pick. That way, when the Blazers win the lottery and get the #1 pick, we push the Nets into the 4th spot. I figure the fates owe us one.

unless you're expecting N.O. or Washington to suddenly stop tanking and win all of their remaining games that's probably not gonna happen : )

4th worst does not "have" the 4th pick. it has a 10% chance at the 4th pick.

a 10% chance at the 4th pick is NOT worth the extra risk of losing the pick completely. we want them to finish no worse than 5th.
