Don Lagreca think the Rangers should deal Panarin, especially because the odds of getting Zibanejad to waive his NMC and getting a team to take on his bad contract is very unlikely:
Lagreca has the answer, but it’s a bigger bombshell and, perhaps, even more difficult to pull off than trying to force Zibanejad out of town.
“What I keep coming back to, and it’s a major splash but I think it’s something that probably needs to happen, is do they address the possibility of trading Artemi Panarin?,” Lagreca asked. “He’s got a year left on his contract, he’s very attractive to some teams. If Chris Drury and Mike Sullivan want a north-south team, he’s not a north-south guy. So, as much as you’d hate to give up a guy that’s your leading scorer, is that the move that could now make it more J.T. Miller’s team?”
I do think with only one season left Panarin is much easier to trade and get good value for, and with only one season left, I think Panarin would be much more open to waiving his NMC knowing he can leave wherever he goes after next season if he doesn't like it there. While I have not been a big advocate for dealing Panarin, as I have said many times ANYTHING is on the table to me, and if the best way to shake up the core, and get some value back, is deal Panarin, I'm on board. Plus, it is HIGHLY unlikely he is re-signed, so he's gone after next season anyway AND trading him takes a huge $11.642M off the cap and gives Drury great flexibility this summer. Could be a win win, and allow the Rangers to add better North-South type players, less skill for more bite, which the Rangers need badly.
On Krieder, I may view trading him differently than some. If I could get out from the remaining two years of his $6.5M per deal, I would trade him for nothing, getting the cap flexibility is worth trading him for a bag of pucks IMO. And with that said, I think the Rangers could get a decent 3rd line grinder for Kreider, which they badly need.
I am very focused on being open to dealing some skill for some grit and bite, it's what the Rangers lack big time, especially a playoff bite type 3rd line.
