I am not convinced that Horford is what we need right now. He is under 6'9" in bare feet. Although he has long arms he is not the rim protector we need. I would rather give his minutes to Vonleh moving forward and use our assets on a dynamic SF or a long center.

No doubt he is a solid player so if we signed him this summer I would not be bummed, but no way do I give up Crabbe for a possible 28 game rental.

What makes you guys think a player like Horford would sign here? Have we ever got a big name All Star free agent to sign here? If we could land him though we would be instant contenders.
I'm not sure he makes us into an "instant contender" (probably pushes us from mediocre to good), but I think you're pretty close to the truth when you question if we could even get him in the first place.

The Blazers will only have approx. $30 million in cap space next season. But, almost half of our roster will be FAs, 1/3 will be RFAs.

RFAs.
Crabbe will get paid. But does Olshey match offers on Leonard, Harkless & Alexander? These 4 RFAs may use up a big chunk of the $30 million.
Is Frazier worth paying again as the 3rd PG?

FAs
Kaman, probably not coming back
Henderson, not sure what Olshey is thinking for him?

That is 7 roster spots to fill using the $30 million.

Then the following off season RFAs CJ & Plumlee get paid.

This roster appears to be built around the available future cap space.

Looking into the future, it is hard to see any trade before this deadline that takes on salary beyond this season. Not saying it can not happen, but Olshey like options. It appears he can go in several directions if needed, again. Keep this roster mostly together and fill in the gaps with value minor FA signings, or, make a major trade, or sign a max FA.

When does Olshey go all in, and make a major deal that takes PA into luxury tax territory? It probably will not happen before this trade deadline.

Crabbe - I hope we re-sign him

Meyers - I really don't care. I hope we trade him before the deadline.

Harkless - I think he's worth another year or two. I doubt he gets a huge offer. I would bring him back.

Alexander - He's nice to have on the roster because of the potential, but he hasn't played a minute of NBA basketball.

I thought it was $30 million in space WITH all the cap holds. There's no reason why we can't max one player and then sign all our guys.

If anything we should be browsing for younger players that are stuck on the bench somewhere. Someone like Lucas Nogueira off the top of my head

Not a big deal but I'm pretty sure Alexander is under contract for next season.

He's played in 7 games.

I am not 100% sure. According to one report that was linked in the Howard thread, the Blazers will have $31.4 million in cap space. But they mention this.

Again, it’s important to note that these cap space projections reflect teams keeping everything they currently have on the books and do not reflect cap holds for pending free agents, which could radically impact these numbers.

Agree, and I saw that conflicting info before I posted. He is also listed as a possible RFA. Not sure, but next season maybe an option year. Not a big deal either way.

With the injury to Festus Ezeli, I wonder how far his value will drop this summer
Same with Mozgov (Who has been battling injuries)

Free agent centers: http://hoopshype.com/2016/01/16/nba-free-agency-2016-centers/

As for SF's this summer

Nic, Barnes, Marvin Williams, (I doubt Parsons would ever come here)

I don't want to over pay on Barnes, but I do not see many other options other than keeping what we have.
Aminu, Crabbe, Henderson and Harkless are not horrible.

GS has some decisions to make this summer with Barnes, Ezeli, and Speights

I would consider maxing out barnes actually. I feel like he can offer more offensively than he's shown and guys that can defend multiple positions are at a premium. I think he would thrive under Stotts

I'd rather max Barnes than Batum.

A quick note on this:

The 4 RFAs are not much of a concern. Crabbe's caphold is a measly 1.2 million. Harkless and Leonard's caphold total up to be ~15 million, which is a lot in theory, but not extending the QO to even one of them would free up around 7 million of cap space. So if we are projected to have 30 million in capspace, the Blazers could maintain Leonard and Crabbes caphold, and still have enough money to offer a full max contract to someone, then match an offer for Crabbe/Leonard after said free agent is signed. This is how the Spurs were able to sign LMA despite having to give a max contract to Kawhi Leonard as well.

Lillard
McCollum
Barnes
Vonleh
Plumlee

McCollum
Crabbe
Harkless
Aminu
Davis

Well we will certainly have plenty of opportunities to evaluate Barnes during the playoffs. It will be a double edge sword. If he plays too well his value will sky rocket and everyone will want him, or if he sucks....there will be no reason to go after him. Maybe we root for him to get an injury that keeps him from playing but is easy to bounce back from, and hope his replacement plays so well GS will not see the need to match us.

Exactly! I'd move Meyers for a guy who isn't getting the opportunities he should and a filthy protected second rounder as a sweetner. That seems a realistic trade.

Is Barnes > Batum? I don't know

I think so. Batum might handle the ball better but I think barnes is a better shooter, more explosive and is better mentally. Defense is a wash. Plus he's 4 years younger. He hasn't reached his ceiling yet.

I've had my fill of Batum. I think he'd revert back to his old self if he were to return to Portland.

Batum is great when not injured, bad when injured, and he's injured half the time. Been that way his entire career and I don't see that changing. Pass.

Some of you homers are so blind. I think we feel like Crabbe is a better defender than he is because CJ and Dame are so bad. Crabbe is a borderline starter. A Courtney Lee type. And to say you'd rather have that then a star big man is crazy.
just last night you posted, we're pathetic, we're going to lose.....and you call homers blind? ok ..now you downplay Crabbes defensive talents...wow. If you think trading Crabbe brings in a star big man.....you need to get your eyes checked

Not suggesting anything but imagine korver with Lillard and mccollum.

Horford/Korver for Crabbe/Leonard/Plumlee/Kaman?

Dame
CJ/Hendo
Korver/Aminu
Vonleh/Harkless
Horford/Davis
