There is a limitless supply of assholes, term limits won't fix the problem. Instead, we need to stop electing assholes.

I disagree...term limits will definitely help. Not every elected official is a crook, even though it may seem that way to some.

If not every elected official is a crook (which I agree with you on), then why do you want to get rid of all of them? One bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch girl.

What makes you think there would be fewer crooks in the replacement group?

The whole Ukraine thing was a conspiracy theory piloted by Trump and it has been debunked. But Trump won't believe his own people/intel. So we've got what we've got now.

lol..well, I suppose one good cliche deserves another..."If you wanna make an omelette, you gotta break a few eggs". :bgrin:

I also believe that even good people can be tempted if they are in Washington long enough.

Read the opinion piece I just linked.

Yes. Hunter was on the board. No it wasn't illegal for him to be on the board per Ukranian law.

Whoopty do. The lady who wrote the piece I linked thinks what Trump did is worse.

I realize that assholes are elected. But the voting public has yet to vote out the multitudes that are bought by lobbyist. If you keep big money out of elections and two party committees that basically are beholden to big media money, that would help. And because Tom the billionaire can afford to buy his way on to the debate stage just doesn't seem fair. Campaign finance rules need to change. The whole thing now seems like a beauty pageant run by media the two committees. You really want those elected to be in office for 40 50 60 years?

^^^ Exactly...even when some representatives are first elected they may very well have good intentions...but the temptation will likely eventually find them. Some give in to the temptation, some do not.

If they are good, I don't mind if they are in office for 60 years. If they are bad I don't want them in office at all.

I agree with everything you say about money in elections.

Would you support term limits at your place of work? That is, everybody gets fired, say, 4 years after they were hired?
Would that make the place function better? Would the constant stream of fresh employees invigorate the place? Or would nobody know what they are doing? Would you have wanted to take the job in the first place knowing that you would have to start looking for your next opportunity soon?

The problem I have with term limits is that lobbyists don't have term limits and there is no way to impose them. Give the legislators term limits, and the lobbyists will have all the institutional knowledge, and thus will be more powerful, not less. Also the lobbyists will be 'helping' the legislators find jobs after their term expires. They do that now, but they'll be able to do it even more frequently. And that help comes at a cost to us.

C'mon barf...equating term limits at work to the shit that goes on in Washington?...I know it was intended as some sort of analogy but I don't think it's a fair one. I, for one, have never been offered a bribe in the workplace.

No one is saying that term limits will solve everything but it' would be a damn sight better than what we have in place now.

It will make it worse, in my opinion for the reasons expressed above. Simple example: If we didn't have term limits on the presidency, we'd probably have Obama rather than Trump right now.

But we can disagree to agree, or however that goes.

I understand what you're saying...but hey, we have "term limits" on the POTUS, why not eveyone else?

But you're right, we can civilly agree to disagree on this topic.

I don't like somebody telling me that my man has been in office too long and he can no longer represent me. As long as they meet the legal standards I should be free to choose whomever I want including Barfo for President.

??? How could you ever want anyone other than me for President?

barfo

And just to keep everyone happy you would consent to having Maris as your running mate, right? :bgrin:

Sure! I think he'd enjoy attending funerals in Outer Bumfuckia, and otherwise sitting quietly and looking at me admiringly.

But even Trump "met the legal standards", and just look where we are. Again, "term limits" (I'm thinking maybe 10 years) may not solve everything but you gotta admit that the longer someone in in Washington, the more likely they are to become "rotten".

Apparently for some bizarre and rather kinky reason I agree. I need a shrink.

Im of the thinking that the reason most politicians wouldn't like term limits is because it limits their financial benefit, which shouldn't be motivator to remain in office. Government officials are suppose to be civil servants in their callings. lol

If were to see the net worth of those in congress for more than 25 years or so, I'd bet most are millionaires and it's not income from their congressional state paid salaries.
