Offseason Targets

I still think Khris Middleton is likely to be traded, but a trade with Milwaukee receiving Whiteside and Miami receiving Middleton makes a lot of sense.

If they want to save a bit of money after signing Parker this offseason, and they don’t think Middleton will re sign in 2020, they might be interested in a Harkless and a pick type trade and using our TPE to take the Tony Snell or Dellavedova deals off their books.

My best bet would be that we just draft a wing and wait to make any significant move next deadline or the summer thereafter.

Unless we manage to find a buyer for one of our well-paid players, I don't think it makes much sense to use TPE (it's $12M, correct?) and maybe even MLE as that'd carry tax payments that would far exceed any advantage we might gain. Nobody is realistically going to trade a good player just for TPE. MLE is a different case because players like Evans (short term) or Hezonja (long term) could improve this team to the extent when it would make sense to pay additional money to bring them here.

Can we trade TPE plus pick for a higher pick and a bad contract though? I imagine we will have no. 26 or no. 27 in the draft (Warriors, Rockets and Raptors the only teams who will finish with better record than us for sure, maybe 1 or 2 more teams but not certain by any means), we can send that pick plus a TPE to Charlotte for their pick (should be around 10-11) and one of their bad contracts (Marvin Williams, Kidd-Gilchrist). It might not be that easy considering a top 10 pick is worth a lot more. Maybe try dealing with Denver to acquire their pick and take Faried from them? Those are bad contracts but also players that could help us in the short term, and we have an owner who can easily afford extra payments. Bottom line is, if we can move high enough to get Mikal or Miles Bridges, Kevin Knox or Lonnie Walker, paying the extra tax might be worth it.

As for free agency, I just want us to retain all players we have and MAYBE have a look at Tyreke Evans to acquire for MLE (because he'll be worth extra payments). Perfect Summer for me would be:

Trade TPE and no. 26 pick for Kenneth Faried and pick no. 14. Select Miles Bridges.

Acquire Tyreke Evans for MLE.

Resign Nurkic for $60M / 4 years, Napier for $11M / 2 years, Connaughton for $3M / 1 year, Davis for $18M / 2 years.

Try finding a buyer for Leonard to slightly offset the tax bill.

Why would Miami want Middleton though? They have similar player in Josh Richardson only much cheaper and in general they seem to have enormous amount of 2 slash 3s - Richardson, Winslow, Waiters, Ellington, Johnson and the list goes on.

Vince Carter? I guess but that's not a meaningful target.
Isn't he in his 30's? Late 30's? Does he use Grecian formula to cover the gray? I like Patty C. Hoping he stays and starts an Irish pub in the city. Of course if he wants Boston he will be celebrated.

He'll be 42 next yr

Because Middleton is much better than any of those guys and they want to consolidate their talent. Their roster is built for a trade.

I remember when I was 21 and thought everyone in their 30s was old and probably needed boner pills to take care of thier ladies......I was wrong.

Those pills are needed when you are in your 60's

It seems to counter productive to let your best center and one of two best players leave just so you can get yet another player for the position that you are actually pretty fine in.

Unless they think Adebayo is ready to start and play significant minute in every game. Even then I think they can do much better than Whiteside for Middleton.

Lebron James
Paul George
TJ Warren

I get where you’re coming from there. I think Whiteside has had issues with Coach Spo and was benched some games for his lack of effort and then Adebayo would come in and really make the most of those minutes for a lot less money. Making me think Whiteside would be available for the right price.

For Milwaukee, they’ve been looking for a big man for an entire year and Whiteside fits their ‘blueprint’ pretty perfectly.

Anyways, I wouldn’t be suprised if Middleton gets traded and I would love him to be here I just don’t see an offer we could have that could beat other suitors.

I think Portland will have two strategys going into this off-season.
One, poaching quality players from teams who look to add big names to their roster.
Philly, Lakers, ZombieSonics, Rockettes, Spurs.

Two, helping teams free up PT for younger players who their teams believe have more upside.
Was, Phx, Bos, Nets, Knicks, Dallas

I like Middleton a lot and I also do not see a deal that we could make to make this work. He would compliment this team so well at small forward position.

As for Whiteside, he would be a good fit for Milwaukee for sure but I don't see Middleton for Whiteside that would make sense from Miami's perspective. Maybe include a third team in there that would have more of a need for Middleton but would have some young talent to send back to Miami who might want to go a little younger?

Young and promising you say? Caleb Swanigan and Jake Layman coming right up.

Sorry I missed the joke. Probably because the two players you mentioned have nothing in common. Swanigan is 20-years old and still has some upside. Layman is 24 and doesn't. Someone may actually want to receive Swanigan in a trade. Layman, not so much.

Would i be a sacrificial lamb if i said let it bake? Sign our free agents and go another year, see where we sit and hen try to make the move for that missing playmaking difference maker?
