With no pick, how does draft preparation unfold?

“Anyone who has met Paul Allen knows there is no area of our business he’s more concerned with and more invested than the draft and young talent. We’ve talked about this before, when you don’t have a lot of assets when you take over, that you inherit, you have to generate assets and you have to be opportunistic. And the draft is a time for opportunism and you just never know what kind of deal will include a pick. You don’t know when you can convey a pick or a future first because there is an opportunity. Last year, we conveyed two future seconds to grab Allen Crabbe because we thought he was that good and he was a great fit for what we were trying to accomplish. All you have to do is go over the track record of the league at draft time and how many times deals involved players for picks, people acquire picks within a deal. I moved picks when I was with the Clippers for future picks in order to get involved in the current draft because it can help the roster. You got to be prepared for that. It’s no different, we talked about this at the trade deadline, and we didn’t make a move. It didn’t mean we weren’t working around the clock to generate opportunities. We just chose to forgo those opportunities because we thought the group, as a whole, was better served chemistry-wise and growth, with what we had brought up to that deadline. And I think the draft is the same thing. We’ll be in here; the season will end whenever it ends, hopefully later rather than sooner. We’ll take a day to do exit interviews and coaching interviews. We’ll be back in and we’ll be at Chicago Pre Draft, we’ll be at group workouts in Los Angeles, we’ll be bringing guys in here to work out. We’ll be watching film and getting our board ready because again, if you don’t do the preparation, most battles are won before they’re fought, you can’t get that phone call and know what you’re doing if you weren't prepared.”

Will Paul Allen stay out of this year’s draft?

“I would think that at some point there’s going to be an announcement from the Portland Trail Blazers [that we] select somebody, somehow.”

The Draft is Paul Allen's baby! He loves that time. This doesn't surprise me at all. Might as well take a swing (even late) in this draft!

Too soon to give up on Leonard for a pick? :)

Funny that was my first thought. Not that I want to give up on him but rather that it makes the most sense

I'm just not sure we have the realistic assets to get a First Round pick though. Would you guys move Wes or Nic for a 10-20 pick? I wouldn't. You know RoLo, Dame, and LA are all off the table. Mo's a free agent. Dorell as well. So we're basically asking a team to take a fringe rotation player for a pick they've been coveting for years? I do believe we will get a pick, but I bet it's another future 2nd type of move.

There will be plenty of time to talk about the draft after we win the Championship. :ghoti:

Eyes on the prize, people!

I have to wonder what if anything we could get for Leonard?

I would toy around with the idea of trading Wes and seeing what his value is. You can't just shut the door and say no flat out.

Would any team give us 2 #2s for Alan Crabbe?

If I'm Olshey I have my eyes on Andrew Wiggins. It never hurts to try! Dream Big!!

Who is? Parker? Embiid?

If you have to ask and throw out a few names then that proves my point right there.

To answer, Emiid and Parker is neck and neck with Wiggins. Really the best spot in this draft is probably #3. Kind of like I hoped we would have got #2 in the Oden draft so the decision was made for us.

If Wes generated us a top 10-20 pick in this draft... I'd have to consider it. We would be looking at guys like Aaron Gordon, Zach LaVine, Nik Stauskas, Cleanthony Early, Shabazz Napier, Willie Cauley-Stein, Tyler Ennis, James Young, etc.

If we are thinking about the future and saving money for a good FA right now it would be hard to pass on.

Only if it was really 10 and not closer to 20.

Wiggins will be the next golden boy of the NBA.

If we traded Wes for a player Olshey REALLY likes I would have a hard time disagreeing regardless of the draft pick (as long as it wasn't like bottom 5 in the first round).

Plus the ~7mil off the books would be nice if we could bring in a good big man to backup Lopez.

How many of you would trade LA for a top 3 pick? How many of you think we could get a top three pick for him?

Same question for Damian.

[raises hand]
Might trade Dame, too, but will say no until I know more about the Top 3 draft prospects. I like Dame, but I don't view him as untouchable like most in here do.

Do you think they can get a top three pick for either one of them straight up? Or would it have to include both?

Targets:

Late lotto/Mid-first
Jusuf Nurkic
Kyle Anderson
Nick Stauskas

Late first
Vasilije Micic
Mitch McGary (if his back checks out)

Early second
Patric Young
Jahii Carson
Walter Tavares

No clue. I don't follow NCAA and won't start reading/watching stuff about the draft until we're eliminated.
Based on the way people are talking up this draft I doubt that anyone would give up a Top 3 pick for either player. A team bad enough to get a Top 3 pick doesn't have a need for someone like LMA. And there are just way too many good PGs in the league for someone to give up major star potential (again, based on what people are saying) for someone like Lillard.
