One backup PG thread to rule them all

this offense is better suited IMO for PG's "w/limited handles and average (at best) vision". Lillard is not exactly John Stockton or Steve Nash.

Agreed that this offense is better suited for PG's w/limited vision than Stockton's Utah teams or D'antoni ball. As for handles, debatable considering how much Lillard breaks his man down on the ball.

What Blake has always done well is setting up the offense and then moving without the ball. This offense has a lot of ball movement, not a PG who dominates the ball. Which I believe Mo did a little too much.

I disagree. Blake never moved at all when here (Nate didn't have anyone move) or in LA where he hung out in on the corners or baseline opposite the ball waiting for a swing pass. He didn't set anything up either place, he handed off to Roy or Kobe, or made a pass to Pau/whatever big at the top of the key and ran to his corner and hid.

This offense requires much more vision/handles than where Blake found his success (portland next to Roy, LA next to Kobe) b/c there everything ran through other players. We don't have that type of offense, or players like Roy or Kobe here. Before you invoke Lillard please consider a defensive backcourt of Lillard and Blake rather than Blake and Kobe or Roy. Neither Dame or Blake is guarding SG's w/o looking foolish.

He'd probably fit best in Houston when Harden is on the floor. Half-court isolation based offenses with a scoring threat @2.

And a little about Jonathan Gibson

If Brown’s scoring pace was alarming, then Gibson’s can be described as torrid. He averaged 32.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists with shooting splits of .444/.355/.878 — slightly better than Brown in every aspect. Gibson also rattled off six 40-point games, boasted a PER of 31.52 (NBA average is 15.00), and had a true shooting percentage of .601 (NBA league average is .539).

McCalebb will get more than the BAE.

Not so sure on Brown. He's been around forever.

kid can shoot well. My only criticism is his dribble. Lazy and high bounce. He's going to be a turnover machine if he doesn't correct that soon

Didn't realize he's 29, two stints in the NBA. Must be something not clicking for him

I see Delonte West will be playing with the Clippers in the summer league. Doc knows what a tough time he has and wants to see him get another chance.

Hey Minstrel - what's with the sudden resurgence? You just been sprung from the pen?

I think the Blazers need a combo guard, not a pass-first, pass-last, pass-always PG like Sly who plays good defense. They need a guy who can create his own offense and by doing that create opportunities for the other guys on the second unit, plus be able to take some of the workload off Dame. Otherwise, the second team is going to struggle to score even worse than the last two years, and that could be disastrous.

As much as Mo Williams drove me crazy, this roster, as currently comprised, needs a Mo Williams type of guy. I think CJ eventually can be that kind of player, and even an upgrade because he has better shot selection, but I don't want to bet the farm on his ability to fill that role this season based on what I've seen so far. And although Barton might want to play point, I don't think he's a 1-2. He's more of a 2-3. His decision-making sometimes makes Mo look like Andre Miller, too.

Brad Turner: The Clippers and free-agent guard Jordan Farmar agree to deal, sources, likely for biannual of 2 years, $4.2 million

Preferably a pg with good defensive skills, ball handling, and ability to shoot the 3.

Those cost a lot of money, because that's what everyone wants. For a cheap backup, you have to be willing to give up something.

For example, Blake can handle and pass and shoot the three, but he can't play defense. Even Shaun Livingston, who can handle, pass and defend but can't shoot the three got the full MLE.

There's no way you can get a complete point guard for just the MLE or BAE.

I was thinking more like Hinrich.

I suppose that's fair, though his numbers are largely trending the wrong way in terms of three-point shooting and assist rate. I'd be a little concerned that his decline will continue and he won't give particularly good three point shooting or play-making, but I could see it working out.

As you said, those cost a lot. Weigh the bad with the good and go for the best bargain.

Hinrich was willing to sign the MLE with Chicago. He may be willing to do that with our team or maybe the BAE if we are lucky. :devilwink:

I would rather have a PG who could attack the basket over one who is better suited hanging out on the perimeter and shooting threes. Our offense is best when Lillard is attacking. We could use one more (at least) who could do that.

Who do you have in mind?

You mean Will Barton right?

No one in mind. Maybe Sessions. Maybe someone from summer league. I just don't want to limit our search to 3 pt shooters. I think we need someone quick who can attack the basket, draw the defenders to him and dish off to our bigs or open shooters.
We have a need for that type of guard.

Lillard is becoming that to be fair...
