I'll be doing an Oregon Coast Day Trip later this month when I'm in town.

Want to hit up:

Tilamook Cheese Factory
Cannon Beach
Peter Iredale Wreck

Where else should I go based on this itinerary? Food, beaches, etc.

I'll prob go to Seaside and maybe Astoria, not sure about Astoria...never really liked it.

Too bad the Brown Derby isn't in Banks anymore. I was obsessed with their commercials.

Fort Clatsop where Lewis and Clark lived for a period. Very authentic and easy. No lines, can mosey at your pace. A real mans place to visit.

I did Tae Kwon Do camp there back in the day. We did the Karate Kid shit.
I got my nose broken in a demonstration for a belt test back in the day. The dude thrush his skinny elbow right into the beak. Had to stand there and bleed on the uniform. The Korean judges seemed to like the situation. Hope it was for me.

Do you think I would be better off starting driving to Astoria, then finishing in Tilamook? Or Tilamook then to seaside, etc?
If you're hitting the Cheese Factory, it's better to do that early in the day. I'd go to Tillamook first, then go north.

Also, I'm a big fan of crossing the bridge and heading up to Long Beach. If you do, Marsh's Free Museum is always worth a quick visit.

Yeah, I really wanted to catch the Peter Iredale before it got dark. But I guess that's the best way, that's the route we usually did growing up.

Besides Marsh's what's good about Long Beach? I've only been there a couple of times over the years but haven't seen any reason to prefer it to any part of the Oregon coast. So what have I missed?

Nothing concrete. I just like the vibe of the main drag. Also enjoy walking the boardwalk. No particular reason. Kinda like how I feel about Rockaway, Nehalem, or Old-Town Bandon. It's not really anything special, but I just feel a little connection there.

Nuts. I want reasons, dammit! Reasons! Data! Cold hard facts! Incontrovertible evidence! A smoking gun! A jug of wine! Topless women!

I guess I'd settle for just the topless women, though.

Go to Cannon Beach Bakery and get some pastries. Really good. And wear a heavy coat. You're gonna need it!

I've been to the Peter Iredale wreck many times but not in the last 30 years. We used to get there by driving on the beach at low tide starting in Gearhart. There used to be a substantial wreck but I think most of it is gone, now.
Seaside has a very nice bakery and the 'turnaround' on Broadway is very nice. There's a great beach at the turnaround and there's a restaurant right there with huge picture windows giving a fabulous view of the beach and all the odd ball people walking along the causeway while you eat. I just looked it up and it's now called The Boardwalk restaurant. There used to be a boardwalk along there back in the early 50s but now it's all concrete. The best restaurant in Seaside in my opinion is Dooger's, again on Broadway, the main drag running East/West.
I think there's also a Doogers in Canon Beach.
The Tillamook Cheese Factory is a must see. They've got a great ice cream selection and cheese samples at the end of the tour.
The whole drive along hwy 101 from Northern Cal. to Astoria is fabulous, absolutely gorgeous.
Oh, Canon Beach is famous for a sand castle building contest and Seaside hosts a nice beach volleyball contest. Seaside also hosts the Miss Oregon contest.
Get yourself a couple razor clam guns or shovels and dig for razor clams in Gearhart.
Also, you can dig for various mud clams, including scallops just North of Tillamook in Garibaldi. All you need are hand held garden tools such as shovel, spades. Bring your own buckets or other containers. I think you now need a shellfish license. I don't know because I've got a permanent one as a disabled Vet. I've been checked in Garabaldi by State police. I've dug clams countless times in Gearhart and never been checked but people tell me they know of other's who have been checked in Gearhart.
If you head toward the coast on Hwy 26, a lot of people like to stop at Camp 18 to eat. The decor is cool although the service is very very slow. 18 stands for the miles until you hit the 101/26 junction.
Be prepared for very aggressive drivers on 101 and 26.
Enjoy the drive.

Pelican brewing is great.

Oregon coast is beat coast... You can't go wrong.

Though I agree Astoria is probably my least favorite. And that bridge... been over it many times... my anxiety hates it. Lol.

Nothing wrong with a brewery tour.

Ran out of time to get to Peter Iredale. Did get some sweet footage though.

I just got back from a 2 night trip to the coast and went to the Tillamook factory for the first time.

It was insane seeing how big the bricks of cheese they produce and cut down are. Seeing just how much of a process it is, but mainly seeing how much of it is handled by machines, and how many people it takes to man the line. Not sure I’ve seen what a massive manufacturing plant like that looks like.

Didn’t go to their meat area but saw a billboard that it’s home of the 2 foot meat stick. A bit down south in one of the towns I saw there’s a cafe called Double D’s. I think the two of them should collab.

Weather was basically perfect. Went during the week so it was less crowded than it will be this weekend.

Saw a lot of out of state license plates at the coast. Some I remember are: Lots of Idaho and Utah, and of course lots of Washington. Also saw Arkansas (Talked to them, they are on a road trip, came from Portland to the coast, first time they’ve been this far west. Have seen the ocean but not from the PNW.), British Colombia, Texas, Illinois, Minnesota, Alaska

Headed to Alsea tomorrow to take my mother down memory lane. Her and my dad were hippies living off the land when pregnant with me and went into Alsea to give birth… without a doctor even!
Its beautiful coastal mountain lands and she has been begging to go reminisce. We may just loop the coast on highway one and then come out of lincoln city and back.
Im looking forward to getting out of town.

Tillamook Country Smoker (meat stick home) is separate and distinct from Tillamook Cheese. Their product used to be sold at the cheese factory, but that all ended after the cheese people sued the meat people over use of Tillamook in their name in the early 2000's. Now, you need to go about 3 miles north of the cheese factory to the country Smoker outlet store (bright yellow signs, hard to miss) if you want that 2-foot meat stick.

Catch some crawdads in the Alsea River. They’re like lobster size in there

Technically the beef jerky smoker is in Bay City, Oregon. The Kilchis River is the dividing line between Tillamook and Bay City

Tillamook isn't the only home of a 2 foot meat stick.
