OREGON MINIMUM WAGE SET AT $14.75 AFTER GOVERNOR SIGNED THE BILL AMIDST OPPOSITION’S DEFIANCE

it's not frozen because of Obama.

No, but he did veto the only bill to fix to cola calculation specifically for older people. His energy policies have had more to do with the problem than anything else.

Intersting how you are on SS but you support the people that want to completely abolish that "Ponzi scheme"...

It is a Ponzi Scheme, I have always known this, but so what? I had no choice in whether to participate or not. While at the same time I contributed to SS, I paid extremely high taxes, most of the time without the benefit of the shields you have today, like IRAs, 401K, College cost deductions. Basically unless you really made a lot of money, SS was all you could do for many years. Ha! I still remember the spiel about getting Full funding for top wages during my Navy years. Hell that was basically a promise of SS when the day came instead of pay now. It was a rip off, now that it is visible in the rear view mirror.

So I don't know what is interesting, what the hell choice does a man get?l

Serious Question: are you for the Simpson and Bowles fix to SS?

That was quite some time back but no, I don't think so. It doesn't fix the problem, we still would have a Ponzi scheme and it will break our nation. Back in Truman, Eisenhower's day it was a revenue booster, now it is an over sized drain that needs to be terminated. Obama never did jack about it, I hope Trump steps up, and rights the ship.

Abolishing child labor has forced millions of children to live in poverty.

I am certainly glad they did not have such idealistic laws when I was a child. I had some help from other people after I lost my father and them mother until I was about 15. Then I was on my own, work at several jobs. I learned a hell of lot doing these jobs and through those years.
I had a job ever summer after I was eight years old. It progressed to after school and weeks too.

Funny, now that I look back on it, no one paid SS until I was 16. Must be a magic toggle at that point. Paid it then for exactly 50 years.

I live in NH.

It's people that make around $15 already that seem to have a problem with this. "Why should some burger flipper get paid the same as me!"

So, sour grapes for you I guess.

And think about it. These "drug addicts" wont have to get food stamps anymore because they will be able to afford, you know, food. I wonder who they will tell you to blame next.

I kinda felt the same way in 2007 when I was in uniform carrying a gun, ASP, and pepper-spray, patrolling ghetto apartment complexes in Portland at 2 in the morning as a rent-cop. I couldn't even afford a vest, and the most I made was $10.35/hour. Why the hell should some burger flipper make more than me, when I'm out here working 30 apartment complexes a night; alone in the worst places in Portland? Quite frankly, it was insulting.

If I was still in that business, I could probably be making $17/hr with this new wage increase.

I see a lot of businesses going this direction though:

South carolina. If you can deal with the rediculous heat, racism from every race, and down right ignorance, it's not bad.
If all goes well, I am heading around the horn bound for Myrtle Beach this coming fall. Have a boat slip waiting there for me. Dang nice place but I probably won't want to spend the summer there.

Don't be disingenuous

Sorry, but I only had my eye on one bobble. Didn't get it. We now have the lowest 8 years of SS increases in history I think. Three years of zero sort of drag down the small single digit increases
the other years. Mean while the minimum wage in Oregon goes up 127%. This will make an SS check worthless in short order.

There's no maximum age to earn minimum wage.

I'm not sure for who or why but that needs to be a bumper sticker.

I still havent been to myrtle beach but I hear it is wonderful. Im 3 years in and still not adjusted to the heat. The mild winters are nice, ive worn a sweater maybe 10 times this year. Hell my a/c was on until christmas. I run the heater when I wake up it's around 62degrees, I let it heat to 68 while I shower then I turn it off and go to work. Get home and the sun has it heated to 74 and it stays off till next morning. Makes for a nice electric bill. Now summer o the other hand, let's just say save your tax return to pay your electric bill.

There's a reason why Henry Ford paid his employees five times the prevailing wage.
I dont mind a good employer paying people, but when the Gove ment mandates it all they do is cause inflation, because most employers dont give a fuck about anything but profit margin. Now they will find ways to cut labor costs because it's already the most expensive cost. Like moving everyone to part time and cutting benefits, now you HAVE to use obamacare, or get tax penalized. Ah the big picture, where's my tin foil hat?

What's inflation like in Australia? Their minimum wage is 16.88. That inflation argument is falling flat.

The only one who's argument falls flat is one who compares a foreign country's infrastructure and/or economy to that of the US. How desperate do you have to be? This seems to be a reoccurring theme with Liberals and Democrats, who fail to understand the very basic and glaringly obvious: that we are not a European country.

I know that's a foreign concept to understand for Liberals....but it really is true. What their economy is, and what their inflation is or is not....is completely irrelevant.

I mean really....do I REALLY need to explain that to you?

You do realize...that is, if you're capable of using basic Economic skills like the rest of us...that in order for businesses to turn a profit with a higher minimum wage, they WILL either have to cut their work force, raise the price of their products, or do both. Or cut back the working hours.

Unless you believe businesses are going to just take the hit? In which case, they wouldn't be a business, since the object of a business is to make money by providing services or products.

This isn't rocket science. It's Economics 101.

You think it's "fair" to those people to have their hours cut back, or to be laid off, because burger flippers want "a living wage"? Funny....here I was, thinking that you were about fairness and "equality".

Jade, I don't think he quite gets it, because he's under the same understanding that it's okay for everyone else to pay into the free tuition fund for him. Spread the burden around to everyone else so they don't have to be responsible for themselves. That is the theme this political cycle.

I have a small experience from the last go around of the min wage increase...
When they did the last go 'rounds of the min-wage increase a few years back, I purposely took notes of the menu prices and Lloyd center food court immediately saw price increases across the board for many standard lunch items. I know, because I've been working in the same area for the last 12 years, so I was a frequent lunch diner at the Lloyd Center; I've since switched to bringing my own lunch, because you guessed it, shit is to damn expensive for a daily meal.

Minimum wage jobs aren't mean't to be a career. They are a stepping stone. Not sure why or how this ever changed.

Me neither. Somewhere along the line, something changed. And if I had the answer to this problem, I'd gladly give it.

In my father's day, he worked because he had a family to support. In the 70s, he hitchhiked back and forth to Texas from the Bay Area to work as a sheet-rock layer in Construction. Then he married his first wife, who drowned in the ocean one day while they were at a beach. Then he met my mother in....I want to say 1980?

In the 80s, he had to move out of his MIL's house because my mother was expecting her second child (my sister), and he had bills to pay. He was in recovery from cocaine addiction and alcohol addiction, and my mother followed him there herself shortly after he sobered up.

So he moved us into a one-room apartment in San Jose, and lived there for 5 years while he started from the very bottom once again at a new company. Then we moved into a 5 bedroom house. Then he got a job transfer in the mid 90s to a higher paying position, and he moved the family here to Vancouver.

Now he's Vice President of a company, owns 3 houses (one paid off), and 4 cars. He has a patent, and also holds more Salesman awards and President's Club awards than anyone at his old company. In the next 4 or 5 years, he'll retire a millionaire.

Not bad for a guy who never went to college.

But he did what he HAD to do, and nobody gave him a fucking hand out. He's NEVER been on welfare. There weren't the kinds of services in the Bay Area during the 80s that there is now. Or if there were, they weren't widely known. Remember: no internet back then.

Today, you've got people who are trying to make ends meet in menial jobs to fund....IPhones. Or car stereos. Or other pointless bullshit that our "Give Me First" and instant gratification society has taught them is somehow okay, rather than putting food on the table and working towards a better future.

Like you, I don't know where it went wrong, and I don't have all the answers for it. But I have a feeling much of it has to do with how far technology has advanced in this country, and the job skills required to get them have changed dramatically as well.

When my father was starting over, he was put in charge of a job that, literally, all he had to do was plug a small chip into a light bulb and watch it light up. That told him the chip was okay.

That's it. That's all he had to do. A drunk monkey could do it.

Today, you have companies requiring serious college JUST to get into apprenticeship programs. And that has left many people behind, because that part of our society just hasn't caught up with the times yet. Because many people get out of high school and have bills to pay; never mind having time to go to college.

Mind you....this is merely speculation on my part.

So then they get stuck in the same menial jobs for years and years. It happened to me. When I got out of High School, I was on my own. Had problems with my parents, and they weren't interested in supporting me. So I did 7 years of hourly-wage Security work, which I have absolutely nothing to show for it. There were many times where I slept in my fucking car on job sites because of the hours I worked.

Now I'm having to start over with another kind of career that pays more, and is far more flexible with better opportunities.

Those who HAVE to work to pay the bills know the true value of wealth, because they see what they need at the end of the tunnel to be successful and prosperous in our society. The rest focus on what's in front of them and live day by day.

My father knew he wanted a better life, and drove himself to many grey hairs, month-long business trips to foreign countries, and had to make hard sacrifices that effected our family greatly; both positively and negatively.

I guess it was just a different time?

So I don't have all the answers. And what I posted above is merely MY speculation of why society moved on from the rest of us: I believe the overwhelming technology boom we have today has played a huge part in what jobs are like in this country.

But I do know hard work pays off, and you're right: minimum wage jobs were never meant to be careers.

Sorry about the life-story, by the way. I rarely ever talk about my family to anyone except my shrink, but it feels good to do so once in a while. I love my parents to death, and I'm very proud of my father's accomplishments.
