Blazers Ownership Threatens to Cut Financial Ties with The Oregonian Over “Trash Brothers” Meme Blog
Until this morning, the response mostly seemed like the ventings of a frustrated fanbase. Now, it may have cost the paper some revenue.

Tensions are running high in Rip City.

After another tough loss to the Golden State Warriors Saturday night left the Blazers on the verge of getting swept out of the Western Conference Finals, fans were in no mood for ribbing—particularly from the hometown media.

Following Game 3, The Oregonian published a roundup of reaction on social media, as it's done throughout the playoffs. This one, however, came front-loaded with mocking memes and harsh criticism—including a comment from FOX Sports host and professional troll Skip Bayless referring to CJ McCollum and Damian Lillard as the "Trash Brothers."

The local response was a bit…heated, let's say, with everyone from comedian Ian Karmel to injured Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic chiming in to voice their displeasure. The Oregonian followed up with a tweet explaining that the story "is a round-up of what people on the internet are saying about the Blazers" and "no one here is calling anyone trash."

The tweet was promptly ratioed.

Up to this point, the response mostly seemed like the ventings of a frustrated fanbase. Now, it may have cost The Oregonian some revenue.

On Twitter last night, Blazers President Chris McGowan called the piece "ridiculous" and said the team will not "spend another dime" with The Oregonian as long as he is in charge.

McGowan was named CEO of Vulcan Sports & Entertainment, the group that owns both the Blazers and Seattle Seahawks, shortly before the death of Paul Allen last year.

Requests for comment from the Blazers and Vulcan were not immediately returned, but Oregonian editor Therese Bottomly issued the following statement to WW:

“In a roundup of memes and social reaction after Game 3, The Oregonian/OregonLive included several positive and negative takes by others, and the tweet landed with a thud. While it may have missed the mark with some, our job is not to cheerlead; it’s to report what is out there.”

That's not reporting, that's trolling to get clicks and traffic to the site.

So basically the Blazers are letting people know that if you are critical, you're cut off.

I see a lot more edits coming our way

The Blazers have no requirement to send advertising dollars to the Oregonian.

The Oregonian are not cut off from doing this same reporting, they can do it all they want. If they want special access or funding subsidized from the Blazers they need to have professional respect in their reporting. This is standard to other organizations and other industries.

I hope the Blazers direct advertising and access elsewhere to other media outlets.

Why do you hope that?

That's bullshit. Their editorial opinion was clearly stated in the way they gleefully presented the "Best" digs at the Blazers in their "roundup". Now they are trying to weasel their way out of it. (My apologies to weasels I may have offended by comparing them to OLive.)

Cue the "Oh now if you tell the truth you are a troll crowd"
Go ahead and dance that line if you want. It's wrong. Simple as that.

Because I don't enjoy consuming the content from the Oregonian and would prefer those resources sent to other media professionals. That is my personal preference, others can decide what they like and what they wish to support.

The Blazers should support whatever is in their interest.
Put another way, I'd prefer to support excellence in journalism rather than click bait bullshit.

There's a difference between being critical and being insulting, and it's not a fine line. It's quite obvious, and the Oregonian was quite obviously on the other side of it, and apparently unapologetically so. McGowan and the Blazers are well within their rights to take offense and respond accordingly.

You're kidding right?

The Oregonian is FAR form Liberal.
Hahahahaha. Hahahahaha.

How right wing does someone have to be to think the Oregonian is 'liberal'?

Hahahahaha.

No offense intended toward TB, but...only the sort of person that calls people "libtard" could possibly think The Oregonian is liberal.
