OT: Anyone see the refs hand the Lakers a victory in Milwaukee?

I just don't get why KS is bitching about it. It is one game, dude. The Blazers' haven't gotten the benefit of one call this year?

Hey Trench let me extend the olive branch. I get what you are saying, I bet you can't truly deny that the call was blown. That's pretty obvious, but the question is did they blow it on purpose? I think the issue of your counter comment that caused a little response was saying that flamish response is that he's a superstar therefore he deserves to get calls like that. Well in all honesty in the spirit of sportsmanship no player should ever get preferential treatment on the field of competition.... Ever. Does it happen? Of course it does, but that doesn't make it defensible.

That is the one element that makes Golf one of the great sportsman's games (some of the younger hot heads have tarnished it) you call you're own fouls on yourself. In fact if you ever see a match-play event, opponents have the right to call a player out on not calling a penalty on themselves, but almost never will due to the honor system.

So in other words good players will get calls, but we as fans should at least try to be honest and say "Wow we got away with one there, but I'll take the win"

You make alot of good arguments my man. In the spirit of sportsmanship, preferential treatment should never be allowed. I TOTALLY AGREE.

However, its been part of the game for as long as I can remember. I've been a fan of the Lakers since '85 and I've watched alot of basketball in my time. SUPERSTAR status is earned and once earned, you DO see those preferential calls. Whether we like it or not, it is part of the game in the NBA. Everyone knows it.

Was it a charge? YES. Did the refs make a mistake? YES. Was it Kobe's fault? NO. Did the refs hand them this game? I dont think so. Kobe had to make a tough 3 point play. The Bucks had two opportunities to cushion their lead to 3-4 points, and Kobe with the ice running thru his veins, still managed to put the dagger in the hearts of the Bucks with his last second shot.

If he had been called for the charged would the Lakers have lost? In all likeliness, yes. Could they have still won? Well, we all know when Kobes on the floor, anything can happen, so who knows. There was still close to a full minute on the clock when the CHARGE HAPPENED.

I agree with everything you posted. And youre animated image in your sig line kills my computer everytime .

sorry schilly. haha.. I dont often post outside of the Laker/49er forums and MMA threads. This one happened to show up on the frontpage and I just had to chime in. Mamba's giant Charger photo. That one is a keeper.. haha.. Back on topic guys. See ya around! :)

Not to go all Greg Popovich here, but I'd like to believe it wasn't on purpose. Does the superstar get the benefit of a "close call" here and there? You COULD make an argument (albeit a weak one in my book) that Bogut's feet aren't completely set. I've watched the replay 10 times and in slow motion, and he's sort of back-peddling and it looks like he's set at the last possible second - he just slides in front of a spinning Bryant. It is close. It's still a terrible call. Kobe was out of control, and he did travel. There's no way that foul should have been called on Bogut. But, I just want to believe the officials gave what they saw as a close call to a superstar, instead of blatantly fixing the outcome of the game. The day I believe that, I can't watch it anymore.

Just finished watching the game. Was def a charge, no question. KingSpeed is leaving out something though. The Bux missed like 7 or 8 free throws down the stretch. I think they lost it more the refs helping the Lakers win it. Great game!

You're telling me that is a charge?

1 - Bogut's feet aren't set.

2 - The Kobe/Bogut contact wasn't even solid, that is more a flop than a charge.

Either way, it is one call that isn't going to make or break the season. Bucks still don't go anywhere, and we're still winning the championship.

I think the best the Bucks could have hoped for given the circumstances is a no call, and Kobe still made the basket.

And Kobe still had to make that amazing shot. "You've got to make your freethrows."

You're right, and that's why he's Kobe. I think what outrages everybody who isn't a Laker fan is that this guy doesn't NEED any help from the officials. He's better than everybody else to start with - to give him another advantage is too much to overcome.

Ok I am going to stop opening this thread because of the Lakers fans... Not because they are Lakers fans, but Good lord why does every Laker fan feel the need to have such stinkin large images or animated images in their sig line? Must be some LA form of Cyber-Bling.

Is this a sports forum or a criminal investigation forum?

I root for a basketball player and a basketball team. Not for a rapist. If he did in fact do what she had claimed he did, let GOD BE THE JUDGE OF THAT. He was never in fact proven guilty. Im I correct? I really would like to know. But, as far as I know, he's not guilty. INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GULITY CORRECT? He settled out of court? Honestly, I did not know that. I seriously missed that part. I'm guilty of not knowing everything about Kobe Bryant. WOW!

If you say something that is factually wrong on an internet chat site, expect someone to correct you. Take offense if you want, but in this anonymous environment there is really no need.

In the court of public opinion, a considerable percentage of people view Kobe as a rich and privileged rapist who bought his way out of a Felony charge. I don't see why those people should "get over" something as serious as rape especially if they actually read up on what he did.
This is about the refs handing the GAME to LAKERS RIGHT? Well, i dont think that happened and I explained why.
Superstar calls are BS. By reading one of your posts, we agree on this. You don't get those calls if you don't play for a desirable market and there is no more desirable market then LA which boasts the biggest fanbase in the league. There is no less desirable market then Milwaukee for the exact opposite reason. Kobe received superstar calls as a rookie, so save the earning it nonsense. Favoritism brings into question the results of games and seasons. Plain and simple, it sucks. Teams like Portland and Milwaukee are on the other side of this uneven playing field from the Lakers... it shouldn't come as any surprise that their fans and many other sport fans are turned off by it. I think it limits the league's popularity as many view the results as predetermined or at least highly managed.

btw... BJ Penn is awesome

Block/Charge:
A block/charge foul occurs when a defender tries to get in front of his man to stop him from going in that direction. If he does not get into a legal defensive position and contact occurs, it is a blocking foul. If he gets to a legal position and the offensive player runs into him it is an offensive foul. In both situations, if the contact is marginal, no foul may be called. To get into a legal position defending against the dribble, the defender needs to get his torso directly in the path and beat him to the spot. On a drive to the basket, the defender must get to his position before the shooter starts his upward shooting motion. For off ball players, the defender must get into position and allow enough opportunity for the offensive player to stop and/or change direction. All ties are considered blocks as the defender did not beat him to the spot but arrived at the same time.
Your feet don't have to be set for it to be called charging.

It's not just this one call, it's that there's a systemic officiating bias towards "superstar" players, in particular those who play in a large market city and are marketable. And it absolutely destroys the game.

I thought it was a blown call till I saw that video. That is a block to the letter of the law. Look at where and how the finally make contact, Kobe's right hip to Bogut's right hip...thats a far cry from squared up

God bless that adulterer :devilwink:

No harm done bro and I dont take offense. I just dont like one sentence responses that completely undermine my intelligence. I'm on your wave length here buddy. In the court of public opinion so be it. I thought OJ Simpson was guilty based on the evidence. But thats another story all together right? haha... God will judge him when his day comes.

I dont judge a man's ability on the basketball court based on his personal life either. On the court is is my favorite player playing for my absolute favorite team. Off of it? Well, I dont know him per say. He could be a total jerk?? He probably wouldn't even acknowledge I was there if I waved. LOL. My fanboy mentality goes as far as his skills as a basketball player. Everything else is well, none of my concern. Say he was convicted, my first reaction would be, "Oh sh*t, who the heck are we gonna find as a replacement?" not, "Oh please no, what would life be without Kobe Bryant on my team." I'd say he deserved it if found guilty.

There are many who earn SUPERSTARDOM. Being in LA definitely helped, but look at Lebron. Cleavland is not exactly a desirable market, but LBJ definitely gets a ton of calls his way. Most do not go into a league and gets them their rookie year. Kobe didn't play often enough to really get the SUPERSTAR calls when Jones and Van Exel were still on the rosters. I dont recall many superstar calls his rookie season, nor to I recall him having many starts and much playing time. Certainly not the type of calls he gets now.

What I do remember however, were all those MYSTERIOUS AIRBALLS he made his rookie year against UTAH... WTF? Jazz win. Lakers get sent packin.... LOL At that time I said to myself.. "WHY THE HELL DID WE TRADE HIM FOR VLADE DIVAC". lmao...

btw... BJ Penn is awesome

Being an islander, Im biased. BJ is the BEST MMA fighter pound for pound.... ;)

after watching that footage about a good 5-6 times, it wasn't a definite charge. It could of gone either way.

This is nearly always the case in a game where people say a single call "cost" the losing team a win.

Any team that puts itself in a position where a single call can swing the game one way or the other hasn't taken care of business. There were probably dozens of plays in regulation where a shot was missed or a bad pass made. You could argue those plays cost the losing team.

Unless it happened again and again all game long the Bucks have nothing to complain about.

The 2006 Dallas Mavericks on the other hand have something they can really complain about.

Hey Trench I'm not one to let facts get in the way of a good opinion, but Kobe settled out of court. That essentially means Kobe paid her a huge sum of cash to drop the charges.... Why would he do that? Ohh and that is considerably different than going through the judicial system and being proven free of guilt.

She dropped the criminal case because she was going to lose the criminal trial and if she lost that she would have been fighting a losing cause to win a civil lawsuit against Kobe to collect any damages.

It disgusts me Kobe cheated on his wife, but I never believed he raped the girl.

As for the play it should have been a non-call. I don't know why refs feel obligated to make a call one way or the other whenever there's any contact. Let the players decide the outcome not the whistle.

MBS-Multiple Bullshit Calls. Bucks were robbed.
