Domantas Sabonis is in the 13/14 class.

Not much to see in that video but I love the bloodlines.

Re: OT: Zags going hard after Sabonis' son

If he is half the player his father was I would love to see him in a Blazers uniform in a few years.

Re: OT: Zags going hard after Sabonis' son

It's crazy how many of the players I grew up watching have kids that are coming into the game. Rik Smits' kid is also a big time recruit in the class below. He's a 6'10", 200 lbs. HS sophomore being recruited by Indiana and Purdue.

Re: OT: Zags going hard after Sabonis' son

Arvydas was unimpressed with the U.S. He kept to himself while a Blazer and has returned to Portland once since he left. I doubt the kid will play here other than one of the very top schools.

I guess by "very top school," you mean like Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Indiana, or Kansas? Gonzaga's not far behind that pack in the modern era, and they've also got a great track record for developing international talent. Hell, their three top players this season were all foreigners, and they've got a center from Poland in the mix right now that could be one of their better players to date.

They've sort of become the go-to school for the talented, "alternative" prospects...

Re: OT: Zags going hard after Sabonis' son

Stockton is a generation ago. The only other Zags to ever play in the NBA are: Dickau and Adam Morrison (lasted 5 and 3 years), and still playing: Turiaf, Daye (usually a DNP) and Sacre (an end of Round 2 rookie), and future: Olynik. Should I mention Slim Pickens?

Gonzaga is not a traditional NBA factory like some major programs. If Arvydas sends his kid overseas, I think it will only be to one of those solid gold schools.

It's really unfair to bring the success of Gonzaga players in the pro's into the discussion. Obviously, schools with rich traditions will attract the top recruits. That's where Gonzaga is different. Despite his flop of a career, nobody recruited Morrison, and he was one of the best NCAA players of the decade. I doubt Duke, Kentucky, or any school for that matter, knew who the hell Kelly Olynyk was, and now he's looking at the lottery.

Similarly, how is Daniel Orton doing? It's one thing to get big time recruits, that will be pro's regardless of the school they go to, and it's another thing to develop talent. Take Martynas Pocius for example. Duke brought him into the fold at a time when he was the next cant-miss Lithuanian, who was amazing scouts with his athleticism in the Hoop Summit, yet he sat on Dukes bench, rotted and never really played. He resurrected his career going back to Europe and now worked his way back up to playing for Real Madrid, no thanks to Duke.

My point is, there's a difference between committing to a school to sell your brand and committing to a school that can develop your skills, and if there is really more perfect blueprint for Sabonis' son than Kelly Olynyk, it's probably Przemek Karnowski. If he weren't playing in one of the deepest frontcourts in the NCAA, he would have a bigger buzz around his name right now. I would not be the least bit surprised if would up declaring for the draft before Sabonis even makes a college decision.

Watch your language!

I like Olynyk and good luck to Gonzaga. And I don't get the watch your language joke.

Was Sabonis ever an All Star? Who wants half of a non-All Star on our team?

Re: OT: Zags going hard after Sabonis' son

Sabonis' son is going to be visiting both Gonzaga and Oregon this weekend after already visiting Arizona State. Should be an interesting recruitment process.

Well, first off, if he's half the player Sabas was, he'll have one good leg still by the time we get him! :ghoti:

Did you really type this? You know he had MAD injuries when he came to the Blazers right? If he had of came over when he could have we would have won championships.

Arvydas used to DESTROY the Dream Team. @ :57 Get it on your HEAD Big Dave!

@ 1:28 OH MY GOODNESS!

I wonder if Sabonis has any feelings about the US college system. Growing up in the USSR the idea of coming over here to play college Basketball must have been the furthest thing from his mind. He probably only cared about the Olympics. Or at least the powers that be encouraged him toward that way of thinking. And in today's modern one and done system and so many international players able to get drafted high without having to play in America I wonder if he thinks it's a good idea for his kid to play college in america.

I can guarantee at least one championship, possibly two if Sabas came over when he was in his prime. I'm almost positive we destroy the Lakers and deny the Bulls their first title, and I'm pretty sure we beat them the second time around as well. As good as Jordan was, the Bulls had no center. Sabonis would have dominated.

You put Sabonis on the team in 89 and we're talking about a threepeat.

Re: OT: Zags going hard after Sabonis' son

My Zags just got a commitment from 5 star PG Josh Perkins of Colorado. Baller!

The type of passer Sabonis would love to play with:

Long, a great feel for the game. But, still raw, and still super young. Needs to fill out. Nice touch from outside like pops.

Crossing my fingers that my Zags can land him.

Re: OT: Zags going hard after Sabonis' son

Bloodlines don't always work - look at Michael Jordan's son.

OTOH, you have Stephen, and maybe Seth, Curry. Tim Hardaway Jr. is a decent prospect. Who knows whether the offspring of Sheldon Williams and Candace Parker will be as mediocre as Dad or as good as Mom?

Maybe it's just more tradition, but baseball seems to have more generations, sometimes even 3, of the same family.

Or Magic Johnsons son. Or Clyde Drexlers sons (although they excelled in other sports, and seemed to have inherited their mothers work ethic and brains). Or Rick Barrys songs (altho Brent was a solid pro). Or Patrick Ewings son.

Hopefully their offspring looks more like mom... ;)

I think it's because baseball doesn't necessarily rely on athletic ability, but fundamentals, brains and strength. I do realize that opens a can of worms, but it's true.

I think a case could be argued that athletic ability is least important (of the 4 major sports) in baseball, and that sport IQ is the most important.

Domas Sabonis, son of the legendary Arvydas, made his Spanish League debut yesterday and finished with six points. po.st/WWoMMp

Done deal.

It'll be fun watching Sabonis in the stands. His kid is going to be real good.

Good enough for another first weekend exit for Gonzaga? Butler and Wichita State already surpassed the Zags as mid-majors.

Well, I guess I should quit being a fan.
