This is an absolute stunner to me. The guy has the people skills of a hamburger with skin as thin as plastic wrap.

He's the Lane Kiffin of Sr. Management.

Texas is hiring Steve Patterson, currently the athletics director at Arizona State, for the same position in Austin, the school announced on Tuesday afternoon.

James Rund will serve as Arizona State's interim athletic director while the school searches for a replacement for Patterson.

PREVIOUSLY: Patterson said he wasn't interested in Texas job

Patterson, who holds undergraduate and law degrees from Texas, has overhauled the Arizona State athletic department in two years at the school after previous senior positions with the Portland Trailblazers, Houston Rockets and Houston Texans.

"Steve Patterson emerged as the perfect candidate to build on Texas' athletic success and DeLoss Dodds' legacy," Texas president Bill Powers said in a statement. "Steve helped build an NBA championship team and brought the Super Bowl game to Houston. Far more important, he's run a winning program at Arizona State that places students first and is committed to their lifelong success."

Sports Illustrated reported Patterson was joined as a finalist for the position with West Virginia athletics director Oliver Luck, who also is a Texas law grad. Sports Illustrated also reported that Patterson will receive a multiyear deal starting around $1.4 million per year.

Patterson will oversee the nation's largest college athletics budget. He will replace DeLoss Dodds, who has worked at Texas for 32 years and is moving into a consultant's role.

The appointment is subject to approval from the Texas System Board of Regents, which is scheduled to meet Nov. 12 and 13. Patterson would begin at the university later this fall. Powers plans to formally introduce Patterson at a news conference on campus later this week.

ASU President Michael Crow said in a statement that Patterson leaving after less than two years as Vice President for Athletics will not "slow our forward progress in the least. ASU will be attractive to a wide range of candidates across the country."

Patterson, Crow said, "has positioned Sun Devil Athletics to continue its forward momentum well into the future. He first became involved with ASU three years ago to put the university's athletic department on a sound financial footing and that is exactly what he has done. I well understand his desire to return to his home state and wish him well at the University of Texas."

I always thought he got a pretty bad rap here. He was set up with a near impossible job.

Whether he's a tool or not doesn't really matter. If he's a capable administrator and fund raiser then he'll be successful there. That said, I have no idea if he's good at either function.

Absolute HUGE news here. Most love the hire so far on radio

Really? I'm surprised that they are that excited about Patterson. Is it because of his dad, and also Steve's days with the Rockets? He's a UT grad too, so that's probably a part of it.

Given his Texas ties, I suspect Steve is quite popular in Texas, much more than he is in Portland.

Plus, he's not afraid to fire people, so it's goodbye Mack Brown!

LOL. Yeah, someone who's not afraid to let 'er rip.

He's a slimy bastard. That's what I've gotten through various media reports/accounts, and it's the impression I've gotten the few times I've briefly gotten to chat with him. So I'm rolling with that impression.

Yes, but can he raise shit loads of money and hire and fire people?

I'm pretty sure I agreed with PapaG that he's not afraid to fire people. I have no doubt he can help raise money (though, I really don't know that he needs to help much with that, as Texas is rolling in it). If he's smart, he'll do whatever he can took look pretty and not trip over his own feet.

Texas already has the largest contributing donor base in all of sports. I think he's there to clean house. The TV deal they have with ESPN alone means that revenue is going to continue to flow, even if he turns off some long-time boosters and the 'good ole boys'.

Thank you, but it's "Yoda". I'm not allowed to have my old name back.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like I'm also going to start calling the Rose Garden the "MODA Center" (hell no). And like I referred to Prince as Prince, even after he was a fucking symbol (I didn't).

I will protest the silliness of you not being allowed your rightful name back, whether you like it or not. And that begins with referring to you as "PapaG".
