OT:Heat Working On Plan To Sign Carmelo To Create Big 4

They may as well name Kobe Bryant player/coach, because he's going to be running the team unless an elite coach who he trusts (Coach K????) is brought in out of the blue.

Coach K leaving Duke? That would be a huge surprise!

This seems to be more talk then actual fact. Its been rumored for awhile but what would they all have to take to get it done, 13m starting salaries?

Miami should sign Darko too. THEN they would have a Big 5. By the way, I have no problem with this if it happens. The wouldn't be breaking any rules and it's not the NBA saying anything, it's the PLAYERS saying we care about winning and are willing to take less to play together. That's a good thing, to me. What Phil Jackson should be doing is getting Wade, LeBron, and Bosh to come to NY for less money.

The state and local income taxes in NYC are much higher than they are in Florida. There is no state income tax in Florida. James doesn't need any more exposure; he's saturated in terms of how much more he could make in NYC. And please, nobody bring up David Lee's alleged $5m local endorsement money as a Knick. That never happened, yet seems to pop up from time to time on this board.

HAha I had never heard that.

Any move that makes LeBron a spectator on offense and hurts their defense........I am all for. I hope they sign Melo.

I'm sure he will attempt it

Chris Bosh denied an ESPN report indicating that the Miami Heat have already begun discussing adding Carmelo Anthony in the offseason.

Bosh said that it has never been discussed amongst himself, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

“I think that’s very, very unlikely,” Bosh said.

The four players would have to take substantial paycuts.

But Udonis Haslem doesn’t believe adding Carmelo is that far-fetched.

“It doesn’t seem unrealistic,” he said today. “There was a time nobody would have thought you could put this team together, with those guys taking pay cuts, and even myself taking a paycut. You can never say never."

^ This is all I took from that article.

I just don't see Carmelo fitting in with those three. Miami has won on great defense and the ability to get out in transition. Melo is not going to hustle on D and that will create a lot of tension.

I don't like that combo at all. If the big three were smart and they really were willing to take a pay cut, why not go after a PG or center? Why duplicate what they have?

If that's the casei hope they try it and fail miserably when they get melo.

how can anyone not like the LBJ/Melo combo?
Does everyone forget how well LBJ and Melo play together in the Olympics?
LBJ is the ball handler and Melo takes a backseat to him. Melo can play off the ball, has shown the ability to.
He just will only do it with LBJ because that's the player he always compares himself to. He loves to play with LBJ.

Defense would be an issue, but Melo has the tools to play defense.. LBJ is probably the one player that can call him out on poor defense because LBJ is the one player Melo respects.

You make some valid points here. It could work. However I am not sure using the Olympics is a good example. Although the competition has improved greatly, we are only talking about a handful of games that are NBA comparisons. Plus the rest of the USA team is basically a dream team every 4 years. (even if it is not like the first dream team)

But I admit Melo would give the Heat what Wade used to give them and that is a second offensively dominant player.

I agree the competition isn't exactly NBA level. But it does show that Melo is able to play off the ball with LBJ as the Alpha dog.
Personally I think LBJ and Melo are a perfect fit for the other. Wade was never a great jump shooter, at all. at all.. He's streaky and can get hot, but that's never been his go-to-skillset.
Taking KD out... who is a better shooter than Melo? not many... Melo can shoot..
I guarantee one thing.. If Melo was playing off of LBJ his shooting % would be MUCH higher than it is now... because LBJ would get him open looks.

My only question goes along with the competition level of the Olympics...
Never really have issues or go through many rough stretches in the Olympics... But the NBA's level of competition is sooo much higher.
So..
Will Melo stay together if He and LBJ would lose a few games or go through a rough stretch?
I can't answer that... But I do believe Melo respects LBJ a lot. At least that's what the media says and they're always right.

I personally believe LBJ and Melo would fit better than LBJ and Wade ever did offensively.
Defensively? that's a question mark.. But... Melo has the tools, just needs the drive.

Miami represents the pinnacle of the one-on-one style. It got beat by the pinnacle of the Wooden team style. Would adding one more fantastic one-on-one players really help?

I'd love to see melo in Miami. The expectations would be off the charts, and I don't think they'd win it. Would be fun to see melo sacrifice 70 million and win nothing!

The rest of that Miami roster is a mess. Bosh is Robert Horry and Wade is Brandon Roy. Adding melo to that with a bunch off minimum salary vets isn't enough.

sorta funny, Wade and Bosh together are not a big anything except way overpaid players for what they produce

if they do not opt out Wave and Bosh each make over 20 mil each next year - YIKES!

and people wonder about Nic's contract? Huh?

Initially Wade, LeBron, and Bosh were Batman, Robin, and Batgirl. Now, Batman is nearly dead, Robin is panicking, and Batgirl is useless.

It makes sense, the Heat need a consistent second scorer.

If I were the Heat I'd try to re-sign Wade and LeBron to 4/48 contracts, let Bosh and Chalmers walk, re-sign Allen and Lewis (small contracts) then go out and sign Steve Blake (2/5), Jordan Hill (3/15) and obviously give Melo the max.

Cole / Blake
Wade / Allen
Melo / Lewis
LeBron / Haslem
Birdman / Hill

It could work for them.

You want to give Lebron a 12 million a year contract and pay Melo twice that? Did I miss read that?

No, LeBron is worth way more than Melo, but if he wants to win... Paycut would help that tremendously. He already makes hundreds of millions off the court.

Heck, lets say LeBron went to NY or LA and made the max... He would be paying a ton of taxes on his income so 12 million is about what he would net in other markets anyway.

If LeBron wants to win. Sign with Portland for Vet min. Way better team then NY, LA, or Miami going to have. lol

Does not matter how much he is making off the court. All of these guys make more money than one should be able to spend. Unless the entire team decides to do this, I do not see Lebron taking half of what another player makes just to win a championship. Winning a championship would not be guaranteed either since depth and the health of Wade are serious concerns. Miami is not Brooklyn either when it comes to paying the luxury tax. They certainly could have used Mike Miller, Joel Anthony, and an MLE player they chose not to sign last offseason.

Using that strategy I think you would be better off compromising. Melo would need to sacrifice some salary as well to make the gap a little closer.

If he wants REALLY to win he should go to HOU if they can dump Lin and Asik, he'd be a great fit with Harden and Dwight, Chi and Cle would be the second tier choices

Seriously! I think Nic is better than either one next season. Thats a shocking thought, and really highlights the dominance of LeBron James.

I don't understand what Bosh is trying to accomplish on a basketball court anymore. But the Heat would be far better off letting Wade walk and keeping Bosh. I think from a PR standpoint and just as a message to future free agents they won't go that direction. Wade has meant so much down there. But purely from building a quality basketball roster Wade making $10 million for more than one season is a bad choice. The guy has serious knee damage. He regrets having his meniscus removed when he was in Derrick Rose's position; he is now paying the price. Degenerative knee conditions only change in one direction.
