The Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns are closing in on a deal that would send All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire to Cleveland, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

The Cavaliers would send Zydrunas Ilgauskas and J.J. Hickson to Phoenix in exchange for Stoudemire, one of the league's most dominant big man.

While Cleveland remains in talks with several other teams, the club, from management down to the players, has settled on Stoudemire as its first choice.

The ball is in Phoenix's court. The Suns are mulling whether the financial relief provided by Ilgauskas's $12 million contract and the young and talented Hickson are enough for them to part with Stoudemire.

Cleveland believes the addition of Stoudemire would all but seal LeBron James' re-signing with the team when he becomes a free agent this summer. The Cavaliers are also prepared to sign Stoudemire, who has one year and $17 million remaining on his contract, to a long-term contract extension once the season ends.

The Suns will likely waive Ilgauskas, which would allow him to be re-signed by Cleveland after 30 days.

Cleveland is also talking with Washington about acquiring Antawn Jamison, as well as Indiana about Troy Murphy. Meanwhile, Golden State is trying to entice the Cavs into taking Corey Maggette for Ilgauskas.

Phoenix is basically getting cap relief and JJ Hickson for Amare.

This is on par with the Gasol/Kwame deal.

But I like how this increases Cleveland's chances to keep LBJ from bolting to New York.

Steve Kerr

I read a snippet from an article (I think on realgm) about how the Suns were not looking for a salary dump, that they would require getting talent back, so Hickson would have to be included. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???

JJ Hickson
Career PER: 13.6
PER this year: 14.3 (playing 19 MPG)

It's debatable he's even a better prospect than Cunningham.

Mind boggling how much more is available this year for a large expiring contract. To think that if we had Darius's expiring contract, we could have gotten Caron Butler or Stoudamire (even if it's just a rental) for nothing (Miles+Travis+Blake+Cunningham or something).

Hard to believe that is the best anyone is willing to offer for Amare.

barfo

Would definitely make Cleveland favorite's this year, if they aren't already.

Trying to be a unbiased as possible here, but this is worse than the Gasol trade.

I can't believe that is the best they can get for Amar'e.

Damn! Cleveland is my 2nd favorite team, so i'd be stoked!

If they did get Amare, that would probably entice at least one free agent this summer (probably through a sign and trade since they probably don't have the cap space to do more).

Williams, whoever, LeBron, Amare, Shaq -- DAMN! And they got Verejou off the bench. Sick team. Easily the favorites, maybe for the next 10 years. Easily the best 2 players on one team. I hope it goes down because Then it makes it likely that a Portland (depending on health and development of roster)/Cleveland finals could happen (Cleveland has been my #2 team for a couple years now).

But this seriously has a chance to make Cleveland as good as the 90s Bulls if they do land a FA this summer... and super young core with Amare and LeBron.

Go Blazers! (I want Gerald Wallace or that a with Houston for Landy/Battier/Brooks)

Edit - It also takes the Suns out of the playoffs. And NO is probably out. So we need to beat out Memphis or Houston, which should be somewhat easy as long as we continue to get healthy.

the only good news...

assuming the suns and hornets go south with paul hurt and amare out....

the blazers just need to pass the grizz for playoffs

who else would want him/ (could/would) resign him?

not a huge market for a guy who is going to demand 6/120 and plays zero defense.

Yeah, sounds like Miami decided to pass on Amaré, or not willing to give up anything (Beasley) for him.

This is what I've been afraid of. Our championship window is probably 2+ years away. It could be the 90's all over again - running into a dynasty in the finals a couple of times and coming up a little short. We actually ran into 2 dynasties back then (Pistons/Bulls) and just got beat by two really good basketball teams.

The question is, does Roy and Aldridge stack up against a LeBron/Amare pairing?

If that's the question, it doesn't need to be asked. Our only chance to even get to the Finals is if Oden delivers.

I don't think the Lebron-Amaré duo screams dynasty (as much as Lebron-Bosh does). If Amare could get back to where he was 2 years ago and maybe even play some defense, they could get there.

If this goes down, it could put up a roadblock between us and a title for years to come.

God we really fucked up RLEC.

we basically let it expire and got adre miller out of the deal. not oo bad. amare would be nice though, very nice with greg actually.

what we REALLY fucked up is the darius miles deal, he would have been an expiring this year. i almost wish we would have gave him 48 mpg until his legs fell off, then claimed the medical exception.

Yeah, might as well let him rot on the bench and use his expiring contract.

he would have freaked no doubt and might have made a huge fuss, but all we know for certain is that the way the blazers DID go about it did not work/help whatsoever, aside from maybe the raised morale/chemistry of not having him be a distraction.

Nice with Greg out, you mean? If not, I think an Amare-Greg duo is a horrible combination.

i think one of the best defensive players and one of the best offensive players would be nice to have. you dont. no biggie.

There would be no space in the paint with those two in there. Both would lose effectiveness.

i disagree wildly.

can we agree that amare is a face up player? and that greg has very limited offense?

amare shoots jumpers 55% of the time. unless you think LMA shooting 66% jumpers at a FAR lower efficiency is a better thing...not to mention getting to the line twice as much.
