OT: How can the heat offer Miller MLE?

Someone explain to me how this is possible given they will sign Lebron?.... with lebron, they would have about 1-2 million to work with under the cap...what am i missing?

Well, as I understand it, you can only use the MLE if you're over the cap. So maybe they're telling Miller that once LBJ signs, they'll be over the cap, and then they can offer it?

This is how I fear Miami can fill out the roster, BTW. It may take a few years, but good role players will come via the MLE and maybe even the minimum exception because they will want to play with the new big 3.

Where does it say MLE? It just says they offered him a contract.

Sorry Not MLE, but MLE money.... which means they would be under the cap...the assumption in that story is that Lebron is going, and Miller would be on top of Lebron

No because to use their current cap room in order to sign James they have to FIRST renounce the MLE for the entire 2010-2011 season.

Either James is not going to Miami or Miami is not offering Miller a contract above ~$3million.

Miami does not have and will not have the MLE to use to go over the cap this summer.

There are only 3 possible ways for Miami to do this:

1) The offer to Miller is contigent on LeBron not taking up the remaining cap space Miami has. If so, Miller could accept the offer, and Miami would still have room under the cap to make more offers to other free agents. I suppose Miller is their number one priority if they miss out on LeBron. LeBron = SF. Miller = SF.

2) Any combination of Wade, Bosh and/or LeBron take starting salaries that total the amount offered to Miller LESS than they could have, so Miller can be signed as well.

This seem very implausible. I don't see these guys accepting that much less money, and certainly not on a wing. If they would even consider it, it would be for a Center.

3) This is really a sign-and-trade proposal, and Beasley goes out.

Wade and Bosh have already said they'll take less in order to fill out the roster. Barkley did this back in 1992 because he wanted to win. I believe, if LeBron signed with Miami, he would take less too. If LeBron cared about money, he would sign with Cleveland.

They aren't offering the MLE, although it's MLE-level money. If true, it means that each of the big-3 would be taking about $13 million each instead of the max (~$16 million) which gives the additional cap space to sign the rest of the people. Miami doesn't have the MLE because they started under the cap, as mentioned before.

I agree with the poster before about how Miami can build up a team every year using the MLE on a good free agent. However, the existence of the MLE is because of the current collective bargaining agreement, which is set to expire; I've read before that owners want to get rid of the MLE for the next agreement (obviously players don't because it helps them get good "mid-level" contracts). So it's not a lock that the scenario of building up with the MLE will play out. But it's certainly a possibility and why I thought the big-3 would form there, knowing every year they can add a quality piece (assuming not a ton changes with the CBA).

It seems to me a lot of folks have forgotten that Udonis Haslem is a Heat free agent as well. They can sign him and go over the cap, and then they can offer the MLE.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

They renounced Haslem's Bird Rights to get so far under the cap. To qualify for the MLE, you add MLE to the salaries on July 1 and if it puts you over or you're already over, you get it. Otherwise, you don't get it.

The teams that went all in won't have MLE until next year (possibly).

They will be trading Beasely to MINN for no salary in return since MINN can absorb the money if I read it right. They get a TE for that... they can do a S&T for a player which is <= that amount.. or they can use the additional cap space to sign a new player...

but be ware.. of the many minum slary players they will need to fill the roster
